Judging from some of the posts on the subreddit r/WellThatSucks, however, it seems that contractors also live by these words. But when their Plan B fails, the consequences are much bigger than a broken suspension of disbelief. Like a hallway that looks like a scene from the Titanic.

Even though there can be many surprises, a hot housing market is often causing buyers to forgo a home inspection prior to purchasing a property, something experts say puts them at risk.
"The housing market has changed since I started my business in 2008, especially in the last two and a half years," said Bruce Jacobs, a registered home inspector who operates Jacobs Property Inspections in Waterloo Region, Canada.
"The inspections I do most often today are those after the home buyer gets the key to the house and they have possession."

I’ve certainly done that with some of my clients, which is to have an inspection done before a house is listed and then make that inspection available for potential buyers. Some people can say that it is weighted in the favour of the seller, however, if you have a viable and respectable inspector, he is not doing it in anybody’s favour. He's doing it on the condition of the house, not in the favour of anyone else."
As a realtor, Brooks said the advice for potential new homeowners is not to have a home inspection.
"I want to advise them to have a home inspection but I’m also going to tell them that if they put in an offer with a home inspection, they will not get the house," Brooks explained.

Gate said that typically with any house that's 15 years or older there are systems that are at the end of their life cycle.
"Roofing and HVAC are the two most common failures after 15 years, but the importance of a home inspection falls to safety and cost. Number one, if there is an electrical issue in an older home or even things like missing stair rails, those can all lead to personal injury," Gate said.
"The second thing is cost ... You exhaust all of your financial resources just trying to buy a house. Mortgage rates are higher, payments are higher, and housing costs are higher. Once you do find a problem in the home, people may not have the budget to fix it or fix it properly."

What I’ve learned from this is to avoid glass things in your house as much as possible. Showers, tables, etc.
This post just confirms all my fears about my kitchen cupboards falling down. Yikes!
Only when they are incorrectly installed. They need to be attached to studs with the correct screws. You can also use a french cleat in certain situations, also attached to the studs. The failures here were not installed correctly.

Am I the ignorant one? I can't understand why all these people are falling through their ceilings, so I'm wondering if they're all really dumb, or there's something different about ceilings in other countries? Where I'm from (Eastern U.S.), there is weak-as-all-hell sheet rock* suspended from very sturdy 2-by-4 or even 2-by-6 crossbeams. There's no way in hell the crossbeams give out and plunk you in the room below, and no way in hell that the sheetrock DOESN'T give out if you put your weight on them. (*a.k.a., drywall. It's just 1/4 inch or less of plaster sandwiched between two sheets of cardboard.)
Yes, you have to be careful, and stay on the frame, or this could happen to you.

We had just had new carpet installed in our house, and I had just renovated the downstairs bathroom. We got flooded 2 days later. If it hadn't been a two story house, I wouldn't be here to type this. 8 feet of water in the downstairs. We were rescued off our porch roof.
Moral of the story: Bad things happen, just do the best you can with what you have.
It's a shame how houses are built these days. Houses built before 1080s are better built houses here in the states. Sad.
Houses built before 1080s here in the states are called pueblos, and they're still standing.
