So what do dogs really think? Truth is, there is an awful lot that we don't know about canine psychology. This fact, together with longstanding myths about dogs, their behaviour and training, means that there are many misconceptions about our furry friends.
In his book Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do, Marc Berkoff explores the current scientific knowledge about dogs' psychology and emotions, busting a few myths along the way. Psychology today looked at a few of them:
Dogs live in the present: Sometimes this is uttered as a scientific fact; sometimes it is an anodyne cliche about how “zen” dogs are — happy with the here and now, and not always fretting like we do about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow. Either way, it isn’t true. We know from a range of studies that dogs anticipate and plan for the future, and have thoughts about and memories of the past. Anyone who lives with a dog rescued from an abusive or neglectful home knows this well: Past experiences shape who a dog is, and trauma leaves a mark.
Dogs love us unconditionally: The problem with this statement is that it gives the impression that love is a one-way street, and our dogs love us no matter who we are, what we do, or how poorly we treat them. Actually, no: Dogs have conditions, just like we do.
All dogs need is a soft bed and food in a bowl: A soft bed and nutritious and tasty food are essential basics. But dogs need a lot more from us. Dogs rely on us for intellectual and emotional stimulation and social support. To really give our dogs what they need, we must understand who they are! We need to try to see the world from a dog’s perspective so that we can provide them with an interesting and meaningful life. As a small example, we may think of a dog walk as providing physical exercise to keep our dogs fit and slim. But dogs also need to be able to exercise their senses, particularly their sense of smell. On average, a dog will spend about one-third of her time sniffing, if given the choice. So we might consider making about one-third of each dog walk about letting our friend explore with his or her nose.
People who don't LIKE dogs are a******s. Period. (People with phobias, allergies, etc, are allowed to not want to pet dogs...but at least smile and tell them what a good puppers they are!!)
People who don't like dogs are not part of my life, simple. I am extremely suspicious of people who say they don't like dogs, go away please.
That, and I'm extremely suspicious of people who aren't liked *by* dogs. Like, what kind of monster do you have to be to not be liked by a dog?

I just think dogs have stockholm-syndrome, they rely on us for everything, they just learn to love the captors.
My dog is like that, he thinks everyone should want to pet him on his walk, and doesn't understand when someone doesn't pet him.....I say the same thing.
Allright, I got my human to type this. I am completely confused by the loose humans in the early mornings. Where are their dogs? I am not convinced that they should be out alone.
I’m 46, I’ve been bitten by 3 dogs, I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like!🐶🐶🐶 (None of them serious, just odd situations not dog or my fault. I was 9, 16, 24. Bad cat bite around 32. I’m overdue 😁)
I was attcked by a giant poodle when I was like five or so. Granted, 'giant' is relative to me being 5 at the time. what really turned me off poodles was the screwed up monsters my grandparents had. (mini poodles. Ima go ahead and say it wasn't entirely the poodle's fault)
Load More Replies...What's not to love.....fortunate is the human who has a loving doggo.
I have two labradors and my boys can definitely relate to this! They think everyone loves them and I regularly have to remind them that no, not everyone loves them and they don't wish to be greeted by a large furry bundle, like they're their long, lost, extra best friend. They always look so confused when their affection is unrequited. It's definitely a lab thing, gentle, loving giants (compared to some breeds) who show loyalty that's unwavering. Love you my boys :)
Dogs, they either love people, or want to bite your head off, there's no in between. It's either snuggles or borks.
You shouldn't hug a dog: An article in the New York Times claimed that hugging dogs makes them uncomfortable and can increase the risk of bites, especially for children. Fine. This much is true: Some dogs don’t like to be hugged, and we should respect their personal space and find other ways to show our affection. The problem, according Bekoff, is that the take-home message of “don’t hug” only applies to some dogs.
Other dogs DO like to be hugged, and some like to be hugged under certain circumstances but not others, or by certain people but not others. There is no such thing as "The Dog," and we can’t generalize about what dogs like and don’t like, because each one is a unique individual. Know your dog.

Lol, my dad told me I made loud complaints about dogs needing underpants after walking behind a dog and owner for several blocks
I have that deal with my kitty, but she gets many other demands in the deal :D
My dog, Scruffy, won't sleep in his bed unless there's a towel or something that smells like my husband and I in it. So, when those articles have to be washed, we rub them on our heads and arms before putting them back in his beds (he has one in the living room downstairs and one in the bedroom upstairs). When I'm sorting the dirty laundry into piles on the floor, he lays on them too. As long as it smells like mom and dad, he knows he's safe, and can relax and sleep.
duly noted. Ima make that a poster and stick it on my wall to look at :)
My pup barks at knocking and even if he can see it is you, say, knocking on the bathroom door, he will still bark at you...

These thoughts are quite beautiful to be honest, and I believe dogs can communicate their feelings quite successfully if their humans know them well. Mine thinks I'm crazy, LOL!!
omg now I want to do this with my birds, especially my green cheek because he's an odd character. He would be like "good morning! I loooove you.....but i'm gonna bite you....not hard, just enough so you remember who's boss."
As another conure owner I can totally relate. I love how birds can be extremely loving and then throw a giant hissy fit if you don’t scratch their little birdy heads in the right place.
Load More Replies...I was reading these and my doggo came in. Many hugs were had. Treats may also have been had.
My heart is light and my mind is happy. Best anti-depressant ever. thank you so much
Love these! You're right though, our doggo is only happy when she is being cuddled! She's a Labrador so it's tricky to lay with her on the sofa but she's so happy when we do!
