You know the feeling. You get into an argument with someone, the two of you are going at each other back and forth, and they get you so riled up that you suddenly can't think of a good comeback until long after the fight is over.
There's actually a French term for this called l'esprit de l'escalier. It describes the feeling you get when you come up with the perfect reply after the fact.
We've all been there. It's devastating.
So let's take a moment and pay our respects to and celebrate the really good comebacks—the ultimate expressions of wit and cleverness. Taken from the appropriately titled subreddit r/MurderedByWords, here are some of the best ways people have ended their disagreements.

Stuff like this also shows how mentally stuck in the past conservatives are. They honestly think scenes like this will actually scare people as much it scares them.
America, F**k Yeah!
It's sad that someone let alone a child needs to do this. This is a government and school funding issue.
You can't spend your money twice, you know. When we just set aside $790 billion for the military, it's obvious we have to cut on some budgets. Yours sincerely, US government.
Load More Replies...In my country children have free school lunches. I really don't understand why America is even considered such a great country...
For the past 50 years they have been slowly becoming a third world country.
Load More Replies...Good on the kid, shame on the school/government that made his actions necessary.
Shame the corporations in the area for asking for tax cuts just for setting up in town. Blame the top earners who get Republicans elected so they don't have to pay the taxes that would feed those kids.
Load More Replies...What we should be doing here is being disgusted by the fact that they force children to go hungry
Another gem in the series of dystopic events re-packaged as feel-good-stories.
Short answer, a lot. There's a lot wrong with this country.
Load More Replies...only in america is this presented as heartwarming instead of horrifying.
This child now knows what he can achieve and the effort it takes. He also sees the huge rewards in doing for others. He is light years ahead of his peers and most adults.
This is not a feel-good story. This is a "we have no empathy or social consciousness so we make kids enter the labor force story".
No free school meals then? All kids in UK get free school meals to the age of 7, and continue to do so after that if their family is on benefits.
In Finland school lunch is free for everybody all the way through secondary education.
Load More Replies...This young man shamed this school, district, and state just by doing the decent thing. He showed generosity of spirit in the face of self-righteous cruelty.
i go to a kind of poor school and they have started giving out free lunch and breakfast
I remember asking a student (neighbours kid) how much he owes at school not too long back. He said "A curly wurly"
I see so many of these stories, especially in the US. And I always think: 'What does it say about the state of this country that this kind fo thing is even necessary??'
Since when did shaking a hand become "manual labor". Bravo for his efforts, but let's be real here people. $5 for s handshake to pay months of meals that the average person(prior to Covid) did on average 20 times a day. A simple handshake.
If the kid is this motivated this young, imagine what his future will be like. Sky's the limit, kiddo. You keep that ambition and compassion right there with it...
Bless his sweet heart. Would like to be around to see the amazing person he grows up to be.
Some You tube personality did a video on these kinds of stories (merketed as heartwarming but actually pointing to major social ills): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXpKvlFQxEs
I do not think we have free lunches in Australia, we didn't when I was growing up anyway. My issue with all of this is that while the child did an amazing thing, adults let him do what he did, why the hell can't a school cover its own bills, if that was his school and six others then it was a few hundred per school, that is ridiculous that that is not budgeted for.
Stories like this shows us that we have to look out for one another as we can’t depend or wait for our electives to do so
Amazing little guy, I tip my hat to him but yeah, why is this his problem?
What the f**k is a lunch debt? Can't you just stop supersizing every meal and give some to the students who need to eat in order to learn so that they can work serving no-longer-supersized meals to no-longer-supersized people? Or do you really think celebrating little Timmy's reaction to watching his friends go hungry is a great example of the beacon of freedom? Oh thank god a 7 year old came along and solved a problem all the f*****g adults were happy to continue ignoring.
Yay ! One more effort, Americans, and child labor and slavery will be back soon !
Alright, I'll probably get downvoted for this I am asking a legitimate question. There are so many ways to get free school lunch and they come in the beginning of school packets. If you're on food stamps, WIC, welfare or any government programs, below the poverty line or if the income, when divided among the family, comes to 10,000 or less per person. Is this a big city problem? I live in the rural South. When we couldn't afford lunch we just brought our own. Like I sincerely don't understand why affording school lunch is a problem. Are you forced to buy school lunch in other places? Is it more then the 2.15 it is here a day? I'm just trying to understand to understand the issue.
It’s very possible that children can’t just bring their own lunch. Unhappily, not all parents have the income to ensure the availability of peanut butter, bread, and apples. For some it’s an impossibility, for others it’s a lack of prioritization of the child’s needs. Whatever the reason, you can’t allow people go hungry. Making sure everyone gets fed is the absolute lowest criteria of a decent society.
