"Socialism" has been used as a scare word in America for at least a century. And no, they don't know what it means. Plus for decades now one of the core right-wing tactics is to blame the left for everything they're doing. Voter fraud? Yeah, on the right. Child sex abuse? Yeah, on the right. Unfair business practices? Yeah, capitalism. It goes on. But they keep their people afraid and angry at phantoms while they gouge them and make their lives worse. Many right-wingers will literally and consciously make choices that make their own lives worse, as long as they can make "the libs" suffer along with them. It's not patriotic, it's not smart; it's just pathetic.

I think you should start using the term social market economy, that's how it's called in Europe and it combines the best of capitalism and socialism. To me as a German the term Socialism always sounds wrong cause it was the System of the DDR and you don't want to have a system with complete state directed economy. We need free markets and a good social system combined.

I really don't understand why people in the USA think we Europeans pay so much tax. My salary is £38,000, (approx $53,000) my income tax and national insurance payments are £8500, ($11,800) that is 22% of my income. The tax a US citizen pays on a similar income would be about $7400. Which may seem like a lot less, but that extra $4400 is still considerably less than the average US citizen spends on health care each year, which is around $12,000. Last year my healthcare costs came to £0.00 and I expect it to be the same next year, and the year after that. That actually makes our higher tax rates look like a bit of a bargain to me.
Yeah I have always paid around 20% in several European countries. And what did I get? Free lunches through school, free University up to Masters, free health care including surgeries, medicine etc, excellent public transportation, safe environment without guns, a great work-life balance, 5-6 weeks of paid holiday per year, unemployment benefits if life kicks me, 3 years of maternity leave, automatic pension even if I don't save up... I could go on :).

From observation over a period of several decades, people with such simplistic views of how taxes work, do not pay taxes.
And with those 7$ provide them with health care, education, clean water, infrastructure such as public transit , roads, electricity and sewers. Provide supports for housing and food when needed. Oh and daycare too. Their 3$ will then be what they need.
Also if you follow the example of europe at worst he would be taken 5€ not 7. A normal perosn pays between 21 and 35%.

Does the non working sibling have on say a mental or physical illness that makes it impossible to work? Maybe they lost their SO so they have to raise their kids alone and need the assistance to be able to feed them?
Neither is good. There's just no perfect answer. However, in capitalism, you can work harder to make a better life for yourself. In socialism, if you work harder, you still earn just as much as those who barely put effort into their jobs.
