I put a nice gift in a self-made joke box for secret santa at work and the receiving person didn’t get that it was a joke box, didn’t read the back of the box, didn’t even look at the gift inside. She took one look at the box, looked super pissed off, put it away and didn’t speak to me the rest of the party. I spent so much time making that box and finding that gift that I feel like crying just thinking about how pissed off she looked. Never again!

i think it is where opened gifts are there and people go around and swap gifts with others - take turns or something and you have to swap. i'm in the us and really don't know for sure.
You bring a wrapped gift, usually something absurd, and everyone draws numbers. Person 1 picks a gift from the pile, then Person 2 can choose a new, random, wrapped item or steal an already open one. If you gift gets stolen, you're back in control, and get a new gift or steal something open (but that was not stolen this round). And so on through all the numbers until everyone has a gift...and there's usually a rule that something can only be stolen a set number of times, otherwise you just KNOW there's that one gift everyone will steal every chance
probably easy to figgure' out if you're familiar with it. sounds fun & confusing.
The important part is that it's a bad gift that nobody would want, but even then, there's usually a few outliers that people fight over because they're not *that* bad or people think they're hilarious anyway. It's hard to come up with a really "good" white elephant gift.
