Dustin Farrell, an American photographer and filmmaker, spent more than 30 days this summer trying to capture the majestic beauty of lightning. He travelled over 20 000 miles around the United States chasing storms to finally put it all together into one breathtaking video called “Transient,” which was shot using a $110,000 Phantom Flex4K high-speed camera at 1000 frames per second.
Although it seems like with such equipment this would be easier, the photographer admits that it wasn’t. “This is one of the most difficult projects I have ever attempted in my career. On several occasions I found myself uncomfortable either mentally or physically. Chasing storms with a Phantom Flex4K is stressful even when things are going well,” says Farrell on Youtube. “There were at least 10 days where I returned home with my tail between my legs and nothing to show after a ten hour chase and 500 miles. There were also a couple of days that I drove home with an ear to ear smile that lasted for hours.”
Most of the lightnings were captured in Farrell’s home state of Arizona, and the whole project was an incredible experience to him that showed how much lightning bolts actually differ. “I learned that lightning varies greatly in speed. There are some incredible looking bolts that I captured that didn’t make the cut because even at 1000fps they only lasted for one frame during playback.” Make sure to watch this incredible 4K video below to rediscover the power of nature.

Share on FacebookI love how the music is timed in with the lighting strikes. I think it adds to the whole effect and makes the video even more dramatic. Great job 👍🏻
Totally agree! How it matched the lighting strikes and the music was very well chosen for a video like this!

Totally awesome video. The mix of time-lapse and high speed capture is very well done. Excellent work!
This was so amazing! I like to watch thunder storms, so this video was awesome in my opinion! As others said before (I could not have said it better) (Janet) The music was very well chosen and the music very well timed with the lightning strikes. And (William) the mix of time-lapse and high speed is very well done. This was of course to time it with the music, but the combination of time-lapse and high speed made it even more interesting. Very well executed!
What equipment are you using? Very nice, i especially enjoy the thunderheads! AWESOME!
