The Breathtaking Beauty Of Lightning Shot At 1,000FPS

Dustin Farrell, an American photographer and filmmaker, spent more than 30 days this summer trying to capture the majestic beauty of lightning. He travelled over 20 000 miles around the United States chasing storms to finally put it all together into one breathtaking video called “Transient,” which was shot using a $110,000 Phantom Flex4K high-speed camera at 1000 frames per second.

Although it seems like with such equipment this would be easier, the photographer admits that it wasn’t. “This is one of the most difficult projects I have ever attempted in my career. On several occasions I found myself uncomfortable either mentally or physically. Chasing storms with a Phantom Flex4K is stressful even when things are going well,” says Farrell on Youtube. “There were at least 10 days where I returned home with my tail between my legs and nothing to show after a ten hour chase and 500 miles. There were also a couple of days that I drove home with an ear to ear smile that lasted for hours.”

Most of the lightnings were captured in Farrell’s home state of Arizona, and the whole project was an incredible experience to him that showed how much lightning bolts actually differ. “I learned that lightning varies greatly in speed. There are some incredible looking bolts that I captured that didn’t make the cut because even at 1000fps they only lasted for one frame during playback.” Make sure to watch this incredible 4K video below to rediscover the power of nature.
