Lockdown's relaxing, people are reacting—the first thing most do is going to a restaurant.

I’ll start with mine… I was working as a souvenir seller at a rock concert. We were right next to the food stand and I saw a worker SPIT on a burger and then wrap it ready for sale. I was totally disgusted and will never eat a burger stand burger again.

The worst behavior that I saw was from some customers.

Pre-COVID, at a high-end steak house (of course it is a steak house, I live in Indianapolis, the Steakhouse Capital of the US). They were sitting across from us and there eight of them. They enjoyed a full meal all the way through dessert and coffee. Right before one of them finished his cheesecake, he asked another person seated at the table, do you have it? There was lots of shushing and "lower your voice" statements that caught our attention. One of the women opened her purse, handed something to the man, something small which he placed in his plate and then there was lots of gasping from the table.
A waiter rushed over and asked what was wrong and the man held up his plate to show the waiter that there was a rusty screw in his cheese cake. Then the outrage at the table became quite loud. The manager was called over, apologies were issued, the manager took the plate away and said he would return. The table started talking about how they could have been killed. The manager returns and apologizes again and was probably going to comp the meal when, a customer at another table stopped the manager and explained that they saw the man ask for the screw from the woman and place it in his plate.
We nodded at the manager as did two other tables who also witnessed it. The manager turned red, placed the bill on the table and stood there. The people at the table started an argument. The manager just calmly said, you may either pay the bill, leave and never return or I will call the police.

Another customer approached the manager while he was waiting on payment and explained that he managed a bar down the street and the couple that had the screw had been banned from his establishment as well as several others on a strip of restaurants because they had pulled this same scam. This caused more outrage at the table and "how dare you's" from the scammers.

The people paid, but did not leave without a disturbance and threatening the intervening customers and the police being called.

I have seen a lot of horrible things, but the most horrible thing that I have even seen was a manager slap a highschool girl who messed up my order. (The only thing she messed up on was she didn't take off the toppings I wanted off on my burger.) Needless to say, I tipped her way more than I would have, and I never went back to that restaurant again...

I've seen the back of a kitchen's stove. It had horrors for everyone's taste: rotten meats and vegetables, mold, dead animals, insects, chunks of black grease. I shiver to this day remembering it. And it'd require a poet to describe the stench it produced.

We were in an old pub that did meals. While we were eating, a man and his wife with their young toddler came in. They didn't have a reservation but the kindly staff made room so they could have a table. The woman fussed about taking her coat off and, to make thing easier, sat the toddler on the edge of the bar while she did it. The toddler, no doubt in protest, procedded to pee all over the bar and we saw it dripping down onto the floor. Both of them simply picked up the now soggy child and left without a word of apology to the bar staff.

Oh here we go. I'm a server and bartender, for years now. I've seen/experienced some shit.

1) First of all, as previously mentioned, children running wild. Please, for the love of God, control your kids! Crayon markings all over the table/chairs. A massive mess of food and tissue under the table and on the high chairs. Literally carrying a tray of five pints in one hand while a child comes out of no where and nearly takes me down. Like, this happens once a week, easily.

2) The "Karen's". Ohhhh, the Karen's. Out-right being cursed at for literally the kitchens mistake and not mine, sometimes for no one's mistake... just, them not happy with the way it tasted. Looking for ANYTHING wrong just for some type of discount. I once straight up told my manager I refused to serve a table because the woman called me a bitch, and continuously used the word fuck towards me because I brought out two of our FREE very large salads for a table of three (it was more than enough).

3) A quote from the movie "Wating" with Ryan Reynolds. "She broke the cardinal rule. Do not fuck with the people who handle your food". This is true. Very true. I will not go into details.

4) People sticking gum under the table is still very much a thing.

5) I once cut a guy off because he had drunk two doubles of scotch within half an hour, had already seemed intoxicated and then went out to smoke a joint (don't get me wrong, I smoke myself but I had to do my job and I have the authority to make my own decision on the matter). He cornered me as I was leaving the kitchen (with three plates in my hand) and immediately got aggresive and threatening. Thank God I had good coworkers, including a massive black dude who instantly came to my defense. His sister tried to claim to my manager that I was being judgmental against his tattoos... I have tatts myself, viable ones.

I can go on and on but this is long enough. Over all, please be kind to those in the service industry. In all honesty, my best service goes to the ones who are polite and respectful, if you are an asshole then expect the service to be downgraded.

When I was a teenager, I was an employee at a popular Southern style fast food restaurant. One of the menu items was a huge cinnamon roll. We sold a lot of them. We kept a 5 gallon bucket under the counter, filled with the icing for the cinnamon rolls. We’d use a large slotted spoon to drizzle the icing over the cinnamon rolls, when they finished baking. One day, as I’m about to drizzle icing over a pan of cinnamon rolls, I noticed the lid isn’t on the bucket of icing. Before I stick the spoon into the icing, I noticed there are a bunch of dead or dying roaches all over the top of the icing. The icing was thin and runny, so there was no telling how many roaches had sunk into it. I told my manager we needed to throw it out because it was roach infested and I asked where we kept the new buckets of icing. He looked at me like I was dumber than a rock. He snatched the slotted spoon from my hand and started scooping out all the visible roaches from the icing. When he was done he looked at me and said, “That’s how you deal that!”

My mother-in-law and I used to frequent this tiny, hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. Their fried rice was so delicious, but it always had these small black things in it. We assumed it was some kind of spice, like a peppercorn or maybe a piece of some all spice. In all the times we had eaten there, neither of us had actually needed to use the restroom. However, one day I needed to use the restroom. I asked where it was located. It was back through a door and adjacent to the kitchen. I noticed a several large bags of rice, piled up on the floor next to the bathroom. There were several mice all over them. I noticed a mouse climbing out of a hole in one of the bags of rice and another one scurry into the rice. It was then that I realized the black things in our fried rice weren’t some type of spice. They were mouse droppings.

I returned to our table, told my mother-in-law to stop eating, and said, “We need to leave now!” I threw down enough money on the table to pay for our meals, and we left. Once we were outside, I explained what I had seen. We were both disturbed. We never returned again.

Reminds me of the meal my mom and I had at a chinese restaurant in Berlin, Germany. We had frequented the place already a couple of times. This time we had little dark, colored pieces of something in our rice. We sorted them out, as good as we could, and continued eating.
I suddenly bit in one, I had overlooked! I cracked my tooth! It was a tiny stone! Then we checked the pieces we had sorted out and realized: they were all stones! We called the waiter, and told him, that we had stones in our rice. He replied: what should he do? He can not go thru all the rice bags and sort out all the stones, it would take forever. We told him, that we would not finish our meals and that he should take our plates away, please. He started yelling at us that, we had already eaten half of our food, so we had to pay the full price. It was very embarrasing, being yelled at. We paid and left.
End of story: tooth was severly damaged being cavity free beforehand, it needed a root canal treatment, and a crown later on.
But: I had called the health department the next day, and a very good health inspector promised me a personal visit to that restaurant. He was really cool on the phone. Two weeks later, the joint was closed. I called again, and he told me, that stones were not the only things they had found! Ha!

Oohhh - this one really bugged me. Favorite little breakfast cafe with my husband and baby. There's another family there - older Midwesternish (we're in a large West Coast city) couple and their late teens/early twenties daughter. The girl was in full Taylor Momsen2010 get-up (remember her?), real slouchy and resentful. They're sitting in silence - I'm focused on my breakfast when I hear the unmistakable sound of NAIL CLIPPING. TM Jr. is FULL ON clipping/filing her acrylics right there at breakfast with her parents. They sit inert. Surreal. I'm so pissed too because the people that work at this cafe are SO NICE. I really hate the idea of them cleaning up her disgusting mess. That's bad enough when the wonderful smell of coffee and food is penetrated by...you guessed it...nail polish! So. freaking. gross. The parents never said/did a thing!!

We were at a Mexican-style restaurant and the tortilla chip cabinet was in the dining room. I could see each server opening it, scooping chips into little baskets when they needed to grab a refill. Then I saw one of the servers sticking their hands in it, eating a handful of chips, reaching in grabbing some more and eating that handful too. Then he reached in a grabbed another handful. I saw him licking his fingers. In the dining room. I stopped eating my meal in horror.
Then, a few minutes later, I heard a party singing "Happy Birthday" in the private back room that you can rent out. It was kinda nice hearing people celebrating a birthday. Then I saw our hostess walking out of the private back room into the dining room, eating a finger-ful of cake (no plate or fork); licking the frosting off her fingers as she walked through the dining room back to the hostess station. I have never returned to this restaurant!

I oblige and begin rolling small pieces between my fingers. We‘d been doing this for a while when they seat an elderly couple across from us and they both immediately start talking to my son and saying how cute he is. So my son then walks over and hands them each a small ball of Play-Doh. The wife seems confused but the husband knew exactly what to do. And then he popped right into his mouth. I have two. One was a father/daughter duo who were told there was no peameal bacon. Ate half their large order, then complained about having to have regular bacon (which they agreed to), before they dashed out the door.
The second was an older couple. You could tell they were up to no good. First they started complaining about my friend and her daughter (an infant). We were talking about breastfeeding in public, with a blanket. That didn't work so we watched them start scheming. The one started to stuff his mouth quickly, and she just cut hers once and then left it. The server came over and nothing was said until he was done. They berated the server and demanded for their meal free because hers was so horrible. We filled the server in on what was going on, as we'd heard them after the first time the server went by.

Upmarket Greek restaurant in an upmarket village last year. Eating an early supper with my wife and kids.
Single guy in his 60's, in expensive casual chic clothing , sitting at the next table videos a 20-something girl at the next table ( 2 tables away from us) , using his cellphone.
He then watches the clip he's just taken, zooming in on her chest.
My younger daughter witnesses this clearly as he now has his phone facing us to hide it from the victim.
My daughter , then 17,years old, first goes to tell the female victim, who was sitting with her parents and aunt, and then directly confronts this creep about his behaviour.
He spins a bullsh*t story about videoing the fancy cars parked outside- it was raining with the plastic blinds closed , so no cars were visible.
He then left in a hurry, having to walk out directly past our table.
My adult son challenged him to show us his phone, which he refused, claiming it was his private property.
He did the walk of shame past us - we loudly criticized him as he walked past, and I had to stop my son physically attacking him .
Management were supportive, but he had scuttled out by the time they were alerted.
Beware of sickos in public places.

I have worked at several fast food places. I have seen workers drop food items on the dirty kitchen floor & pick them up and place them in the to go orders. (Rhymes with Yack in the Fox, located in Edwardsville, IL.)
I have seen day old chili being reheated & served to customers. (Rhymes with Jake and Snake in Arnold, MO.)
You're supposed to label food products with expiration dates & throw out old food.
I have seen cooks not wear food service gloves or change gloves or wash thier hands while making your pizza. (Rhymes with Let's Pizza, in Arlington Heights, IL) No, baking the pizza in the oven doesn't justify your nasty germs on it.
I've seen this same place wipe pizza pans with a paper towel & then regrease them with used oil. No. You wash & sanitize them!
On the other hand, I've seen rude customers throwing fits over wrong food orders & even had a customer come up to the register & throw her chicken at me.
It definitely goes both ways.

have two: #1. military hubby comes back after almost a year. plan a great day, including going to a chinese buffet that we had wanted to go to as it was said to be really good. and, it was. hubby loves beef, me...not so much. but, he said it was really great and talked me into it. surprisingly, i enjoyed it. left to go on the rest of the day. about half an hour later, i got really dizzy and almost passed out. we started back home which was a 45 minute drive and all the way there i threw up...first in an empty soda cup, then then the litter bag and eventually out the window. he took me to the e.r. and a few minutes later i hear him put into the next e.r. bed, also throwing up. the dr. got to him first and, once hearing about our eating out, determined food poisoning. when he got to me, all the dr. said was, you must be the missus. it was reported to health dept and the place was shut down for a couple of weeks.

#2. at the time, i lived on an island which meant restaurants were limited. there was one chinese (i know...again with the chinese but, really...it's nothing against the cuisine or the people. just love chinese food!) the owner/cook was a really gruffy guy, could speak english but only when he wanted to, and was known to be quite the drinker. it was strictly take out. the rumor was if you were going to get take out you should wait until late in the evening (his hours were from around 4pm to around 3am.) as the later it got, the more he had drank and the better the food was. right out of high school, i got a job there as cashier/phone order person. the people were right: the later it got, the better the food. but, i don't think it was all because of his being more plastered as the evening wore on as much as it was the things that i ended up seeing while he was cooking. he would be smoking a cigarette and if the ash or the entire butt fell into the wok he just kept cooking until he saw it and flicked it out onto the floor. if he dropped an ingredient on the floor, he just scooped it up and put it in. i don't think i ever saw him wipe or clean a chopping block or wok but he was meticulously clean and careful with his knives and cleavers. i once commented on his putting dropped things into the wok and he turned on me, cleaver in hand, and screamed at me in mandarin. scared the crap out of me and i quit shortly afterwards. being 17 i didn't even think about the health dept but i did word of mouth regarding his habits. didn't seem to matter as his business kept being a brisk as ever.

On the road, traveling. Made a quick pit stop for a fast food breakfast sandwich and to use the restroom. Went to use the restroom first. I could not believe the stench once I opened the door. I could only conclude that someone was VERY ill for it to smell so bad. In about a minute a young woman comes out of the stall, attractive with an employees uniform on. She stops to check herself in the mirror and walks out the door. I was right behind her (using a paper towel to open the door.} She went to work, I went to my car.

My mom saw a health inspector at a Golden Corral put a thermometer in the tuna and shake her head (AKA: tuna is at the wrong temperature). She has never gotten seafood at Golden Coral ever since.

Once ate at a restaurant where there was a constant dripping of water splashing on me. Turned out it was leaking from the toilets on the floor above me.

So you think that because yours was correct their's couldn't have been not correct? Still no excuse for yelling but your logic doesn't work.

So I worked as a waitress at a club and my colleague which also happens to be my best friend is sitting next to me on our lunch break. So we saw this older lady come in with a wheelchair. Well she looked really nice and sweet so I said welcome to ..... and she looked at me with the biggest grin on her face and said in the manliest voice I had ever heard from a woman,”Thanks glad to be here.” My colleague and I looked at each other so fast because it sounded like she smoked 15 packs a day. We told our boss the whole experience and she told us if we ever saw her again to give her a thumbs up. I seriously looked at her like ????, but she said to just do it. So the next day I came in and gave her a thumbs up when she looked at me. BIGGEST.MISTAKE.EVER. She seriously on the spot had a skimpy outfit under her dress, Got on the pole and started doing a whole routine going on and she earned some cash off some old creeps there though. Scared me for life.
