Strictly speaking, it's an oblate spheroid and not a perfect sphere. It's wider around the equator than at the poles by about 26 miles. This means that relative to the center, Ecuador's Mount Chimborazo is actually higher than Mount Everest.

I know plenty useless things, and one that I can laugh about with history majors is about the jester Triboulet. He is one of the best jesters in my opinion. He slapped King Louis XII on the butt and defended his actions with "I thought you were the queen!" but still got in trouble and sentenced to death. They let him pick his death, and the jester said he wanted to die of old age and kept living XD

If all the people jumped of a chair in one place it would cause a minor earth quake.
You would get the greatest effect if all the people in China were brought together in one place, each with their own chair. If we allow them one square metre each, this would require an area of 1200 sq km (470 square miles), corresponding to a square with sides of 35 km (21 miles). The resulting earthquake would certainly register on measuring devices but would not cause any appreciable damage.

Flat worms have a sword fight to determine who will carry the young and the loser loses their pp and has to give birth. I know this from 9th grade zoology btw.

Report

Jon S.
Community Member

The logic behind this behaviour is also quite interesting. Carrying the young is more energy intensive and means you can have fewer babies overall (you aren't out inseminating other flat worms while pregnant). So individuals want to take the male role as many times as they can to pass on their genes as much as possible. However, all the penis fencing is exhausting and eventually, no matter how successful, every flatworm will lose a duel and become pregnant.

- A half litre bottle of sea water contains the same amount of energy as two barrels of oil in form of deuterium (if used in fusion reactors)

- The booster rockets for NASA spacecrafts can't be wider than two horse butts due to a train tunnel they have to be transported to. The trail width is based on an ancient roman cart meassurement standard... two horses wide

- Flamingos are pink because the shrimps they eat contain a pigment that colours their feathers

- The Wehrmacht in World War 2 was the first army to utilize mass-produceable helicopters (FA-223 and FI 282). Due to the destruction of the factories only low numbers were produced.

- The FA-223 was the first helicopter to cross the English Channel

Until recent breeding methods vastly improved cows milk production, they would stop producing milk if you took their claves away. But if you left their claves with them, the claves would drink all the milk.

There are several methods to trick the cow into thinking they still have a calf, but the oldest method known to get around this natural mechanism was to blow air into the cow's anus or vagina. Today, we know this irritates their cervix and causes them to produce oxytocin (the hormone responsible for both cervical dilation and milk production), but 5,500 years ago, how the hell did people discover this?

This is so weird The word "sneeze" came about through a misspelling of the original word "fneze" or "fnese." Also butterfly, originally it was supposed to be called flutterby as it always fluttered away.

Your brain can sense when someone is staring at you, even when you're sleeping. So if you're asleep and someone stares at you you'll wake up.

There's super-duper tiny mites living on our eyelashes.

Dogs like sqeaky toys because of their hunting instincts, the noise reminds them of their screaming prey.

The world record of youngest mother is held by a 5 year old.

In very rare situations, a dead pregnant woman can still give birth.

have you ever heard making a sword out of the blood of your enemies? Well if you where to drain the blood out of 406 grown men it would be enough iron to make a ten foot long brood sword.so you can actually make a sword out of the blood of your enemies.

Or, as suggested by somebody else (slightly graphic, may wanna skip this if you’re uncomfortable with this) keep one person, and drain their blood, keep them just barely alive, and repeat the cycle

Ummmm... Kinda missing the point. The toxin in pufferfish makes dolphins high. So dolphins have a much different purpose (porpoise??) than play.

being "gay" or "homosexual" isn't weird or abnormal. penguins, orcas, dolphins, and walruses, along with many other species have naturally gay populants. (sorry my English is broken today)

Adolf Hitler was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1939. However, no one receved the Nobel Peace Prize that year. Surprisingly enough this happened on 19 total occasions, those years were 1914-1916, 1918, 1923, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1939-1943, 1948, 1955-1956, 1966-1967 and 1972

John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, still has one living grandchild. John Tyler was born in 1790, was president from 1841-1845, and died in 1862. He had more children than any other president, in 1853 his son Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born, and Lyon had a son when he was 73 years old in 1928, that son is Harrison Ruffin Tyler, who as of right now is currently 92 years old.

So just to reiterate, John Tyler who was president 20 years before Abraham Lincoln has a living grandson in December of 2020.

This always blows my mind.

We gravely misrepresent the timeline of the Earth in our heads and school books. Hold out your arm and look at it. If the Earth forms at your shoulder, then the first single celled life begins at the middle of your forearm. The first multicellular life doesn't form until the base of your fingers. Dinosaurs? Well, just the top joint of your index finger. Humans are less than a hair width of the very top of your longest finger's nail.

Take a paper. Any colour. If you look at the paper for a while against a white wall and then quickly pull it away, you can see the negative colour of that colour for a split second. For example if you hold up a red paper and yank it away, you will see a green square instead of it on the wall.
