Magical Hole In The Sky At A Wal-Mart Parking Lot
(My post) It got dark quickly and everyone coming in and out of the parking lot or just standing there stopped what they were doing and took pictures and ooo'd and aweeed. Cars stopped in the streets, a few old ladies prayed. It was very... magical!

The woman is on the near side of the top of a deep (foreground to background) sandbar that slopes very gently to the Gulf. To give a frame of reference, when one of those squid fisherman boats are resting level on the sand, the rail comes up to the bottom of my ribcage (I'm 6' / 183cm).

I used 'Live Composite' mode in an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera on a tripod. Here is a description that's better than what I could write: In Live Composite mode the camera shoots a series of images continuously with the same exposure time. The camera combines all the images together into a single composite, however, only the first image is used to record the ambient exposure of the background or foreground. After that, only the brighter pixels in any following images are used. This means that while the sky or an illuminated building won’t change, the bright lights from traffic will be written onto the composite image. As the camera uses the electronic shutter there’s only the briefest interval between shots and moving lights appear as a continuous streak. You can watch the image build up on the camera screen and close the shutter when you’re happy with the exposure. Exposures can be up to 3 hours in total and the screen refreshes every time a new image is captured.
