Show me something that nearly killed you.

I was biking in a rural area, no bike lanes, but also very few cars on the roads. I went across an intersection where I had the right of way the crossroad had a stop sign. I remember looking up and seeing the car, think "they're not going to stop." He hit me at about 30 miles an hour (per the police report). It's fuzzy after that. I was laying on the ground, a dude is standing over me. everything starts getting further and further away and it gets dark. I had a static sound in my ears and everything hurt. And then it didn't. I vividly remember waking up in a green field with a stone hedge type thing in the distance. I started walking toward it and heard my mom say "college first" (something she used to tell me a lot before she died.) In my head I fell down, had a dream/near death experience and woke up in the space of a few minutes. In reality I 'd been in a coma for three days. My heart and breathing stopped for 12 minutes before the EMTs got me going again.

A mosquito. That's it. I was 4, and it bit me in between the eyes. Within the hour I was being rushed to the hospital while slowly dying from anaphylactic shock. I was literally minutes away from dying.

Well i picked up a little baby snake to save it from being run over when i was 8, there were others that had bedn run over around it so i carried it to the grass where the others lived it was so cute, found out later though it was really venomous, i was really far from any hospitals and i could have died if it bit me 😬 luckily i was very gentle with it i was always picking up bugs and snakes when i was little but im more careful now!

Around 10'' long, flat piece of stainless steel with a sharpened edge, a plastic ergonomic handle coloured purple, usually used for cutting raw meat and vegetables.

Another thing was a large mass of clear liquid with a slight chlorine taste.

Removing a large restaurant dishwasher, water all over the floor. The guy helping said he switched the electrical breaker off. When we pulled the wires from the back of the dishwasher and the sparks flew, I thought I was gone.

Or the time when I was a kid and I ran into the street after my neighbors dog and I almost got hit by a car. The sound of the car screeching to a stop will stay with me forever.

Very uncommon food allergy to a new ingredient.
Allulose is a rare plant sugar (actual term) that has very low calories and tastes GREAT. It's only recently been mass produced cheaply enough to put in things, so when I saw a new protein bar that said, "Now with Allulose" I got exited.
(Big food science nerd here)
Needless to say, the trace amounts found naturally occurring in fruit were never enough to cause a reaction, but 13 grams was.
I went into anaphylactic shock with the sudden dilatation of all my blood vessels, it happened gradually enough for me to be able to leave work and drive to an Urgent Care.
I pass by my house on the way, and honestly considered going home to either change or just sleep it off (I didn't know I was going into shock at the time)
But I just drove past my house and into the Urgent Care.
While checking in, I started to black out.
I sat down to wait my turn and called my mom, the nurse overheard me saying how it was getting hard to breath, so they rushed me into the back.
I was in full shock by the time I got on the bench.
My family was out of town that weekend, if I had gone home instead, I would have passed out just as I got inside, and no one would have been there to call 911.
I ended up needing to go to the Emergency Room and get on an epi-drip, while I left later that day, my blood pressure stayed low for several days.
I contacted the company that makes the protein bar to inform them about my allergic reaction, but it's not considered a "major allergen" since it's soo uncommon.
I don't ever want to scare people off new foods, or give any reason to fear science, but always start slow when it comes to something new, whether it be your first time eating shellfish, or a new low cal sweetener.
But man, that protein bar was like candy,
mmmm potential death

Lol I have an unfortunate knack for getting into stupid situations, but here's two times:

1. Me and my cousins and our families were hiking up a mountain (i was about 9). We only had one water bottle, but then someone accidentally dropped it into a bush on the side of the path. I offered to crawl into the bush and get it, but as I did and reached out to grab the bottle, I realised the bush was at the edge of the cliff. I wasn't hanging off it or anything, but if I'd crawled a little further, I probably would've come very close to falling off.

2. I was 5, and me and my friend were at an indoor pool. We were playing lifeguards and I decided to pretend to drown in the deep end. I actually nearly drowned. My friend was actually smart and didn't swim over to the deep end because they couldn't reach the bottom either. Our parents literally did not notice, and eventually it was my aunt who came over, jumped in while I was sinking and dragged me out of there.

I woke one morning and was very short of breath. Thought I was having asthma/allergy issues. Went to the doctor, who thought I was having a heart attack and sent me to the ER via ambulance. Although my troponin levels were elevated, there was no other indication of a heart attack. I had an EKG, echocardiogram, sonogram of my legs to rule out a blood clot. All were negative. I was taken to the cath lab for cardio catherization to see if I had blockages in my heart. Also negative. The doctors were stumped. The last resort ordered by my cardiologist was a MRI which showed a HUGE saddle embolism (an embolism/clot) that spanned both my brachia. I was rushed back to the cath lab where catheters were placed at each side of the embolism with a clot busting drug infusing. When that finished, I was on heparin for several doses, all while lying in a hospital bed and allowed no movement for about 16 hours because that could cause the area where the catheters were inserted to bleed; I could bleed out and die that way, since the embolism didn't manage to kill me.
I received exemplary care the entire time and never understood until it was all over and I did massive research just how close I came to dying.

Opioids and the death of my father. I was already an addict when my father passed but his death hit me very hard. I was a daddy's girl. After his passing my drug use got worse and worse. I wanted to die. I had 2 suicide attempts and another nearly successful one. I laid in bed for months rarely eating or drinking. My daughter took me to the hospital as I was non responsive. The doctors told her I probably wouldn't make it through the night. Luckily I did and woke up on a psych ward and that's were my recovery began. I am 11 months clean now and it's still a daily struggle. I suffer from depression and anxiety disorders along with some other things but I'm still here. I visited my Dad daily in the moslem. This too is still a struggle for me but I am working on it.

You're still here! Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is just show up. Recovery takes time and endurance. Keep showing up for the day!! It does and will get easier.

Once I attended a friends meeting and I left very late. It was midnight and I was still on the street, hurrying to catch the last bus. I started running towards the bus station. The road was empty - no cars, no people - so I wasn't paying too much attention while running. I was about to cross the street, when I heard some voice behind, close to me: "Stop!!" I stopped instantly, and a bus ran past me in high speed. I literally froze; 2 steps more and it would have crushed me. I looked around to see who called, but there was no one on the street.

I was born premature and my mum had a disease ( I can't remember what it was called but it had something to do with how the period works and stuff like that) So when she gave birth because I was premature I had to be all set up and was very small for my age and It seemed like both I AND my mum might not survive. But we did!
