In pretty much any other nation on God’s green Earth, healthcare is a straightforward issue. However, in the United States, it’s a topic that divides, fractures, and polarizes the population into warring factions: those for access to free healthcare and those adamantly opposed to it.

Well, here at Bored Panda, we believe that access to free healthcare makes a lot of sense. Meanwhile, the current system is incredibly bureaucratic and wasteful according to the latest stats and ought to be improved. How bad is the situation? Well, around 760 billion dollars go to absolute waste each year. However, some Americans are stubbornly against free healthcare and overhauling the system.

Why? While there are some serious arguments here and there, we decided that it’s time that we took a gander at the most ridiculous reasons that people have said ‘no’ to something that ought to be a basic part of life. Scroll on down and upvote your fave pics. Be sure to let us know what you think the pros and cons of free healthcare are, dear Pandas—we always value a well-argued opinion.

Dr. Andrew Carroll from Arizona, has some experience dealing with healthcare insurance companies and fighting for what's best for his patients. Bored Panda previously wrote about how he broke down in tears when a company refused to provide one of his patients a CT chest scan and contacted him again to go even further in-depth about the system in the US.

My bloodwork showed hypothyroidism on January 6, 2021. My doctor and I found the earliest appointment with an endocrinologist is May 26, 2021. That's 79 days. I'll be at that appointment come hell or high water.

I have a similar condition and I don’t have to wait months. Maybe a couple of weeks. My insurance is kind of trash too but the waiting times aren’t unreasonable. If I had better insurance then I’d happily wait longer though. It’s too expensive.

Can we just get to the actual truth of the issue? All of these comments by 'Americans' are just things they parrot from the liars they see on TV. There is no universal health care in the USA because of the trillion dollar insurance corporations who pay/donate/lobby the politicians to be against it. These people pray at the alter of capitalism. Our laws are made by people who's livelihoods are paid for by corporations. Gun corporations, insurance corporations, drug corporations, Wall Street corporations. All of these businesses are out for profit and power. None of them cares one bit about the welfare of people or their country. All of the anti-socialist, live-free-or-die, right to bare arms, flag waving, Jesus stuff is just the lies they tell the public to get them to support their agenda of $ above all else.

As a Canadian, I can tell you that yes, there are wait times for elective procedures. Some of our provinces are very short on doctors, and it can be impossible to find a family physician. Walk-in clinics and online medical services fill that gap. But when we do require medical care, we are provided excellent care, and it does not cause us to go bankrupt. We don't have to choose to pay rent or go to the hospital.

Needed 6 emergency surgeries, then intensive care and rehab: free. Needed an unnatural tether pulling on my spinal cord, paralyzing me, removed. Was done straight away by world class neurosurgeon, and that's cutting something from the actual nerves of the spinal column (invasive dangerous and superspecialised)...all free. Hey, recently I hurt a ligament in my hand, had to wait just one week then I was in hand physio and have a custom made wrist brace. All free. If I lived in a country without universal healthcare: paralysed at 6, dead at 30. So yeah I'm all for free healthcare lol. Well we all pay for it in our taxes, but tbh our tax rates aren't that bad here anyway, all things considered

Obamacare was just another version of normal USA health care insurance policies. The insurance companies will not give up their power and money without a huge fight. The only way all Americans will get decent health care is if they rise up and demand it. Even then, they'll wait years before the change. Money doesn't only talk - it votes.

I had to remove my appendix when I was a kid. When I asked my dad how much it cost some time ago out ofcuriosity he said, "nothing". Yes some will say "TAXES". But is it better to pay a small affordable amount each year, or sell a kidney and a leg to have a surgery?

you're kidding... I had my appendix out 2 years ago and it was 13,000 alone for the surgery, 40,000 for the 1 week hospital stay, 2,000 for the ER visit, 550 for the medicine, and 250 to see the specialist for a follow-up. Luckily we have insurance so we only ended up paying 30% of the $55,800 ($16,740) and insurance covered the rest

I broke my foot, went to A&E and was seen within minutes. Doctor physically examined and test my foot, then got x-rayed and also did a full cat scan to show me in 3D exactly which bone was broken and where. Got it all patched up with medical boot to keep the foot rigid at all times. Entire time from turning up at A&E to leaving with everything sorted - no more than 1 hour. No charge. (UK, NHS)

We have wait times for ELECTIVE procedures - things that we CAN wait for. Urgent care and surgeries and procedures are taken care of quickly. Even if a visitor to Canada has an emergency, they will be stabilized and cared for until they can arrange to get back to their home country and they won't be charged.

Yes honestly the biggest issue of Canadian health care is the 6 dollar a day parking fee, or having to pay for tv...that's bullshit oh and by the way we do have to pay $80 for an ambulance and $40 for children but my boyfriend is a paramedic and he told me they'll never come after you for it. And even though my son is now 16, I still owe the $100 fee for his circumcision. I've been to that same hospital numerous times since and never had a problem. And during Covid my province health insurance expired last July on my birthday but it's extended. And I've had numerous Covid tests that were free

There is no such thing as free healthcare. Someone is paying for it. Would you like to wait in line for the COVID "vaccine" or the breast cancer medicine that is in short supply? How about the cancers that have gone unnoticed because of the lockdown? That's "healthcare" in Canada - a single payer system where the government rations the thing you pay into.

There is no such thing as "free" anything... yet we use the word, because EVERYONE knows that when you say something is free, the implication is that someone else paid for it. Plus your argument about "short supply" is total BS. If there is "short supply" with a system like in America, then the rich people get the vaccine, and the poor people don't (supply and demand). A centralized healthcare system doesn't create short supply, it just handles it differently when it happens.

According to Dr. Carroll, there are clear financial incentives for the companies that provide healthcare insurance to keep the system, with its high administrative costs, as it is. "It will be very difficult to reduce the administrative costs without overhauling the payment system altogether," he explained that even small step-by-step changes would be hard to push through.

Dr. Carroll was very candid about healthcare insurance providers and how it's not in their interest to do what's best for American patients. "Unfortunately, these payers tend not to have altruistic intentions towards their members. They cater to the advantage of the employers paying for the benefits, who want to try and spend the least amount of money they can."

He continued: "Employers that pay for benefits will need to demand more of the companies providing the benefits or patients will need to file class-action lawsuits to demand that benefits due to them are not unduly restricted, as they are today."

The US spends huge amounts of money on healthcare, but a whopping quarter of the costs are administrative. This means that customers pay a lot, but far from every penny actually ends up helping them directly. There’s a lot of waste in the system and a lot of fat that needs to be cut.

What’s more, hospitals in the US are consolidated. This means less competition, meaning there’s little to no motivation to actually ensure lower prices for patients. If somebody can charge more and the customer has no other choice, why lower the price? (Well, apart from empathy, I mean?)

Where you live in the US and what type of insurance coverage you have (private vs. public) affect your wait times, too. So you can expect to wait in line to see a doctor even if you think you’re paying top-dollar prices for top-dollar coverage. However, 66 percent of all Americans are afraid that they won’t be able to afford medical care in 2021.

In a couple of earlier interviews, Bored Panda spoke about US healthcare with Tumblr user Avilocirapter (who was paying for a top-tier insurance plan), as well as Dr. Carroll from Arizona (who burst into tears when an insurance company “denied a CT Chest on a young woman with post-Covid syndrome”).

Our "mighty army" was 40,000 men. Facing 400,000 FRENCH men who came to your side. I will have a tea. And if I get a burn from it at least my healthcare is taken care of and won't hurt my credit rating, or bank balance.

Meanwhile, Dr. Carroll previously told us that, in the United States, the insurance company is the payer for a patient’s care, so they’re “heavily involved in the provision of that care.” He said: “Their job is not to pay for healthcare but avoid paying for healthcare. It is a terrible system.”

Dr. Carroll also opened up about the hardships that healthcare professionals like him face in the line of duty. “We are trained very early, almost like soldiers, to work hard and long hours, deal with extremely stressful conditions, and work through the emotional turmoil of death, debility, and the effect those things have on the patient and their families.”

However, Dr. Carroll can’t imagine doing anything else. Being a doctor, helping people, is his calling. “I love what I do because I could not see myself doing anything else. I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was 5, since I myself had a major medical issue.”

He continued: “I remember the care and compassion my doctors when I was that age showed me, and helped me get through my very tough time. I wanted to do that for others, and so far I think I have done so. Insurance companies make it difficult though, and nearly force cold, inhumane, and compassionless rules on patients when they are most vulnerable.”

Not Sure It Works This Way

Not Sure It Works This Way

EJ7 Report

Plenty of Americans who are against free healthcare have a mindset that’s full-on ‘the strong survive, the weak perish’ which would be useful in a post-apocalyptic world, not when we’re all supposed to be civilized and aiming for longer, higher-quality living. And it’s a tad ironic that a country that is so full of charitable, warm, friendly people also has to deal with a cold, dehumanizing, penny-pinching healthcare system.

That's true. There's not enough doctors for everyone to be seen immediately so if my situation isn't dire I will wait a couple of months for a visit with a specialist. The more serious the condition is, the closer to the beginning of the line you are placed. I see no problem with that, I don't want somebody else to die because I was impatient. And that's for public healthcare. A yearly insurance at a private network of clinics costs about a quarter of a mean monthly salary. Within that you can go to any specialist (except, I think the dentist) and then it's much shorter waiting time.

They're right not to believe in European socialist well fair states, because something like that doesn't exist. We do not have socialist states here. But that's hard to understand if "universal healthcare" is a socialist concept for you.
