In pretty much any other nation on God’s green Earth, healthcare is a straightforward issue. However, in the United States, it’s a topic that divides, fractures, and polarizes the population into warring factions: those for access to free healthcare and those adamantly opposed to it.

Well, here at Bored Panda, we believe that access to free healthcare makes a lot of sense. Meanwhile, the current system is incredibly bureaucratic and wasteful according to the latest stats and ought to be improved. How bad is the situation? Well, around 760 billion dollars go to absolute waste each year. However, some Americans are stubbornly against free healthcare and overhauling the system.

Why? While there are some serious arguments here and there, we decided that it’s time that we took a gander at the most ridiculous reasons that people have said ‘no’ to something that ought to be a basic part of life. Scroll on down and upvote your fave pics. Be sure to let us know what you think the pros and cons of free healthcare are, dear Pandas—we always value a well-argued opinion.

Dr. Andrew Carroll from Arizona, has some experience dealing with healthcare insurance companies and fighting for what's best for his patients. Bored Panda previously wrote about how he broke down in tears when a company refused to provide one of his patients a CT chest scan and contacted him again to go even further in-depth about the system in the US.

According to Dr. Carroll, there are clear financial incentives for the companies that provide healthcare insurance to keep the system, with its high administrative costs, as it is. "It will be very difficult to reduce the administrative costs without overhauling the payment system altogether," he explained that even small step-by-step changes would be hard to push through.

Dr. Carroll was very candid about healthcare insurance providers and how it's not in their interest to do what's best for American patients. "Unfortunately, these payers tend not to have altruistic intentions towards their members. They cater to the advantage of the employers paying for the benefits, who want to try and spend the least amount of money they can."

He continued: "Employers that pay for benefits will need to demand more of the companies providing the benefits or patients will need to file class-action lawsuits to demand that benefits due to them are not unduly restricted, as they are today."

The US spends huge amounts of money on healthcare, but a whopping quarter of the costs are administrative. This means that customers pay a lot, but far from every penny actually ends up helping them directly. There’s a lot of waste in the system and a lot of fat that needs to be cut.

What’s more, hospitals in the US are consolidated. This means less competition, meaning there’s little to no motivation to actually ensure lower prices for patients. If somebody can charge more and the customer has no other choice, why lower the price? (Well, apart from empathy, I mean?)

In Norway we can pick our own GP online, with a maximum 2 changes per year. There are lists of doctors with a practice near you, and you can see how many patients they have. No GP is allowed more than 2500 patients, but the average is around 1100. Also, we hardly pay anything to see them, and there's a maximum deductable of 2460 NOK a year. This includes consultations with your GP, physiotherapists, and psychologists, X-rays, lab tests, prescription drugs, as well as some dental procedures and rehabilitation. If you're in need of a referral to a specialist your GP can choose one for you, or you can choose your own. As long as the specialist has an agreement with the local health authorities, as most do, the fees are still low and count towards your deductible.

I'm American, I live in France. When I was visiting my home state of Florida two years ago, I ran into two Trump voters, a mother and daughter, affluent. Daughter was pregnant. They both told me that they didn't want to pay for other people's healthcare. I explained to them that I pay less for my health insurance in France than I did as a teacher in Florida, that doctor visits are reimbursed by the social security, and that I paid less than 100 euros for abdominal surgery in France. I could have asked them to waive the payment based on my income, but I felt it was a fair amount to pay. They were stunned and asked me, "Yeah, but don't you have to wait a long time for appointments?" No, no I don't. Americans have been brainwashed to believe that socialized medicine is the devil.

I once saw a specialist (UK) and was not impressed with their attitude so when I needed additional treatment for the same issue I asked to go to a different hospital to avoid seeing the same specialist again. I explained my reason to my GP and they were fine to select a different hospital. It isn't something that is necessarily made obvious but I had read about it online and so knew it was an option. That was NHS but obviously if you go private you can choose who you like. Even UK private is cheaper than US.

If you go public then you don't really get a choice on Drs in hospitals or specialists but you do get to choose your GP. If you want to choose your specialist then you have the option to go private which does have out of pocket expenses.

To be fair it does depend from country to country. Some have strict rules putting you with a specific doctor based on your physical location. But most nationalised healthcare countries (and each of the ones I've lived in) have just as much freedom of choice as a private system.

What really throws people off is when you mention that you can STILL find a privatized doctor in these countries. So you're not even "forced" to go to a general MD covered by national healthcare. The service from these doctors in particular, is probably a lot better than what privatized doctors we have here (in the US).

These guys misses the fact that in most of the counties with public healthcare, there are also an existing private sector and healthcare insurances. BUT due the sane economics the pay rate of the private sector is also sane. Just last week. after 2 free public just in case negative covid tests I went to private doctor to check my lungs, thoat and sinuses to make sure that a week long flu is nothing worse. The total cost of 1 chat consulting session and one face to face appointment with CRP lab test. tadah.. whopping 135 eur / 160 usd and I still get most of that back from my insurance... So, I consider.. We win.

You might want to chose your docter because of proximity, office hours, thei experiences of other patients with them, because of your own experiences with them in the past, because of procedures or studies they have done...there are a ton of reasons. For instance I was at two orthopedists in like three years. First one had a empty waiting room, I felt comfortable with him and jis nurses and he did a good job. The second one had me waiting an hour with apointment, was just weird, waiting room was cramped and I still jave problems with my ancle years later. Guess who I will chose again?

Despite often boasting about being the bastion of freedom and being the best, the US is woefully struggling along with its healthcare system. The US spends more of its national income on healthcare than other developed OECD countries and spends more per person than other rich nations. However, this level of spending doesn’t translate to better care.

Where you live in the US and what type of insurance coverage you have (private vs. public) affect your wait times, too. So you can expect to wait in line to see a doctor even if you think you’re paying top-dollar prices for top-dollar coverage. However, 66 percent of all Americans are afraid that they won’t be able to afford medical care in 2021.

In a couple of earlier interviews, Bored Panda spoke about US healthcare with Tumblr user Avilocirapter (who was paying for a top-tier insurance plan), as well as Dr. Carroll from Arizona (who burst into tears when an insurance company “denied a CT Chest on a young woman with post-Covid syndrome”).

Plenty of Americans who are against free healthcare have a mindset that’s full-on ‘the strong survive, the weak perish’ which would be useful in a post-apocalyptic world, not when we’re all supposed to be civilized and aiming for longer, higher-quality living. That's true. There's not enough doctors for everyone to be seen immediately so if my situation isn't dire I will wait a couple of months for a visit with a specialist. The more serious the condition is, the closer to the beginning of the line you are placed. I see no problem with that, I don't want somebody else to die because I was impatient. And that's for public healthcare. A yearly insurance at a private network of clinics costs about a quarter of a mean monthly salary. Within that you can go to any specialist (except, I think the dentist) and then it's much shorter waiting time.

Facts missing again. I Wonder if it's more a lie or laziness.. Ignorance, I know but such irresponsible statements could be understood as lies.
