My name is Kyle La Fever and I am an illustrator, designer and comic book and storyboard artist. I am also a big fan of art and pop culture.

I made paintings redesigning the villains of Scooby-Doo. It started as an October project to relive the first ghost stories I remembered from the "Scooby-Doo Where Are You?" show, but I wanted to make them actually scary and I just couldn't stop. Each painting took me about 8 hours, so about 200 hours in total for the whole series.

Let me know what you think about them!

I wanted to be an artist the minute I realized that it was somebody's job to draw comic books. I was pretty terrible for a long time and it did not come easy, but I loved doing it and saw steady growth.

I went to college for art. At college, drawing comics was not considered serious art, so I got into and fell in love with oil painting. Over Covid, I bought a new tablet and software and was messing around with digital painting during a life drawing class. I really liked the results I was getting so I started doing more and more paintings digitally, which quickly led to the Scooby-Doo series.

I started the series in October. I was thinking back on my childhood and realized that the Scooby-Doo series was probably the first ghost stories I ever heard. Those villains were always iconic-looking, but just people in masks. I wanted to explore what if those villains were a real threat, really scary, and had serious power upgrades. I was only expecting to do five or six through October, but the feedback was so positive I kept the series going.

I loved painting these and messing around with beloved characters and bringing some of the over-the-top comic book looks to some of the villains. The hard part is that these are beloved characters, so you kill Fred a couple of times because it's funny. You're thinking, In many ways, he is the most capable character, so of course the bad guys would go for him first. To you, he was always the positive, athletic boy scout that you did not relate to, but to some people, he is their guy and they get mad when you mess with him and they let you know about it.

I did a series of other cartoon villains, exploring He-man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Puff Girls, Transformers, etc., and I will be exploring more of those. I also started looking back at cereal mascots, exploring what they would be like in real-world scenarios and I still like to play with Scooby-Doo on occasion so I have some plans with modern-day mashups of Scooby-Doo with pop culture icons.
