19 Facts From Harry Potter Books That Were Never Mentioned In The Movies And Every Fan Should Know Them
It’s natural to think that when you’re translating a book into a movie, something will eventually get cut. More often than not, the films cut out a lot of what the books spend heaps of time setting up for the reader.
This was, of course, inevitable in the Harry Potter series. You know, Harry Potter, the wizard with the scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead? Yeah, the movies left out a lot of context and subplots.
Throughout the seven books, there’s a number of facts and scenes that are never mentioned in the movies that the fandom agrees is a huge shame. The absence of some of these is more significant to the plot than that of others, but, overall, people missed these tidbits in the movies.
Bored Panda has collected some of the best facts in the Harry Potter universe that are mentioned in the books, but were unfortunately not included in the movies. Vote and comment on the ones you like the most in the list below!
Oh, and spoiler alert! Some of the things you’ll read in this article will spoil some things if you haven’t read the books.

House Elves Were Combatants In The Battle Of Hogwarts And Fought Against The Death Eaters
The Battle Of Hogwarts was an epic final battle in the Second Wizarding War that included a bunch of combatants. One particular group of fighters was never shown in the movies, particularly the house elves who came rushing out of the kitchen, brandishing knives and fighting the Death Eaters.
I wish they put this in the movie. It helped show that the house elves arent inherently weak and submissive and that they can fight if they need to. ALSO IT IS TOO SOON TO SHOW ME DOBBY
Neville Longbottom Could Have Been The Child Of Prophecy Instead Of Harry Potter
Neville was actually one of two infants who were referred to in a prophecy made by Professor Sybill Patricia Trelawney regarding the person with the power to defeat the Dark Lord. However, Voldemort chose to target Harry instead.
Ive always loved this bit of lore. It was cool figuring it out as a kid then going online and seeing the (much better) evidence for it other ppl found
Before Severus Snape Kills Dumbledore, Dumbledore Paralyzes Harry And Throws The Invisibility Cloak On Him
Before Snape said the decisive words—Avada Kedavra, the killing curse—Dumbledore actually cast an immobilizing spell on Harry and threw the invisibility cloak on him so that he’d not intervene and not be seen by anyone in the Astronomy Tower. Unlike in the movie, where Harry just stood on the lower floor and stared.
This was a great moment. It showed how selfless and caring dumbledore was.
Harry Didn’t Break The Elder Wand—he Actually Returned It To Dumbledore’s Tomb
In The Deathly Hallows, Harry is seen breaking the Elder Wand and tossing it out. In the books, however, Harry returns the Elder Wand to Dumbledore’s tomb. It’s said that nobody apart from Harry could actually use it at this point, and he’s had enough adventures with it for this lifetime. Besides, originally, it was Dumbledore’s wand in the first place.
That was a really sweet thing in the books. I guess it looked "cooler" for him to break it.
Snape Actually Called Lily Potter A “Mudblood” During Snape’s Worst Memory
Some people are of the conviction that what makes Snape’s Worst Memory the worst one is the fact that he is bullied by the Marauders. However, it is actually the fact that he, in the heat of the moment, calls Lily, his love interest, a “mudblood,” for which Lily never forgave him.
That made me very very sad. I was incredibly emotionally invested back then and i cried when i read it.
Dudley And Harry’s Relationship Wasn’t All Negative As The Two Shared A Touching Moment When Dudley Thanked Him For Saving His Life
At one point, Dudley was attacked by the Dementors and Harry saved him. He ended up thanking Harry and shaking his hand when the Order of the Phoenix was escorting the Dursleys into hiding. Harry thought that such an awkward thanks was the Dursleys’ equivalent of a genuine thanks. This never made the cut, but it was filmed.
That was one of the best moments of the books. It really showed true growth in dudley. He really changed in only a few years
Hermione Founded The Society For The Promotion Of Elfish Welfare
Hermione Granger doesn’t tolerate injustice—so much, in fact, that she established S.P.E.W., the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, which fought for the equality of house elves. This was prompted by an act of great injustice that she saw in the 1994 Quidditch World Cup, whereby Barty Crouch treated the family’s house elf Winky cruelly.
Rita Skeeter Is An Unregistered Animagus Who Would Transform Into A Beetle To Collect Information
Rita Skeeter is a journalist for the Daily Prophet and an unregistered Animagus who would often turn into a beetle and snoop around to learn people’s secrets for her articles. This is never mentioned in the movies, but there are speculations of it being hinted at in The Goblet Of Fire when Skeeter conducts an interview with Harry and as she shoves him into a broom cupboard, she says “you should feel right at home, then,” possibly meaning that she knows Harry used to live in a cupboard under the stairs. The only way she could have known that is by listening to anyone who knew about it and mentioned the fact.
This was a great part of the story. I loved when they trapped her in a bottle and it was a fun mystery as too how she got her info.
Harry’s Aunt Petunia Wrote Dumbledore A Letter Of Request To Attend Hogwarts
When Petunia’s sister Lily, Harry’s mom, got a letter from Hogwarts confirming she was a witch, Petunia also wrote Dumbledore asking if she could also study there. She was kindly rejected and felt hurt that she was left out. It is also believed that she felt so because of her parents being very proud of Lily’s wizarding talent.
This part made me cry when i first read it. It also really helped flesh out petunia
When Visiting His Home In Godric’s Hollow, Harry Actually Saw A Sign There With Graffiti On It Expressing Support For Him
Harry and Hermione went to visit Harry’s parents’ cottage in Godric’s Hollow. According to the book, there was a sign set in the ground outside it that was a monument to the Potters and a reminder of the violence that destroyed the family. The sign was graffitied over with messages of support for Harry, which he thought was touching.
Peeves The Poltergeist Is Never Seen In The Movies Despite Being In All Of The Books And 3 Video Games
The mischievous poltergeist Peeves is considered by many a pretty significant character in the Harry Potter universe, but he was never mentioned in the movies. Scenes with Peeves were actually filmed for The Philosopher’s Stone, where he was played by Rik Mayall, but they never made it into the final cut, and to this day were never released to the public.
i remember watching the movies and waiting for peeves. When i was younger he was my favorite character
Hermione Granger And Ron Weasley Were Actually Appointed Prefects Of House Gryffindor
A prefect at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a student who is bestowed additional authority and responsibilities by the Head of House and the Headmaster. Hermione and Ron were appointed prefects of House Gryffindor. In fact, Ron was one of four members of the Weasley family to become prefects, with Bill, Charlie, and Percy being the other three.
That was one of the best humanizing things in the book for harry. He had to get over his jealousy over not being a prefect
In The Movies, Nobody Ever Tells Harry That His Dad Could Turn Into A Stag
Harry’s father James Potter spent three years learning to become an Animagus, a wizard who can transform into an animal. He ended up perfecting it and became a stag Animagus. And, according to Reddit user alexi_lupin, nobody tells Harry that his dad could turn into a stag in the movies, which “cheapens the Patronus, cheapens Harry's relationship with his father (which never recovers), and also Snape's reveal later.”
That is an injustice. as a huge potterhead i can say that him knowing that caused some things to have much less impact
Harry Used Crucio On Amycus Carrow After He Spat At Professor Mcgonagall’s Face
There’s a scene in the book where Amycus Carrow, a Dark Wizard and Death Eater, came up to Professor McGonagall, too close for comfort, and spat in her face. Harry was near, he dropped the cloak of invisibility, and cast Crucio, a curse that inflicts excruciating pain to the victim, on Carrow.
The Battle Of Hogwarts Also Included Dropping Crystal Balls And A Transformed Desk Stampede Against The Death Eaters
The epic Battle of Hogwarts not only included a scene where over a hundred house elves rushed to fight the Death Eaters, but also, Professor Trelawney dropped crystal balls on the heads of Death Eaters and Professor McGonagall transformed desks to stampede towards them.
Im sad about alot of the cuts from BOH. Alot of the potential for cool magic fights was wasted with death eaters using AVADAKAGUN. And harry essentially using EXPELATAZEROUS. Using cool magic to fight is something i wanted more of and got in the BOH
The Ministry Of Magic Couldn’t Actually Detect Who Was Casting Spells In Places With High Wizard Populations
While it is a known fact that the Ministry of Magic can detect where magic is used outside of the magical realm, it’s actually impossible for them to do so in areas that are heavily populated by wizards. This is why underage wizards and witches are seen using magic during the holiday break without any repercussions.
I love this kind of minor world building that makes the world truly feel real. Also its just cool to see this kind of cool ideas and concepts.
Dumbledore Actually Told Harry What Voldemort's Horcruxes Are
In The Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore tells Harry of Voldemort’s horcruxes. He mentions six in particular because he doesn’t want Harry to know that he is actually the 7th one.
Voldemort intentionally split his soul into 7 pieces: Diary, Ring, Locket, Cup, Diadem, Nagini and himself. Harry contained the 8th piece of Voldemort's soul.
I'm pretty certain there's a 9th bit of Voldemort's soul inside my Ex
Load More Replies...Edward “Teddy” Lupin Would Often Visit Harry At His Home And He Was Actually Raised By His Grandmother Andromeda Tonks
Edward “Teddy” Lupin is the son of the late Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks. Soon after he was born, his parents died in the Battle of Hogwarts. So, he was raised by his grandmother Andromeda Tonks and eventually became the godson of Harry, whom he frequently visited at his home.
Voldemort Is Incapable Of Love Because He Was Born From His Parents’ Loveless Union
In the books, Voldemort’s mother Merope Gaunt gave his father a love potion. J.K. Rowling explained that this was a symbolic way of showing that he was conceived in a loveless union. Things would have certainly been different if he was raised by Merope herself, had she survived, and not in an orphanage.
Voldemort is a kinda tragic figure.I feel bad for him but also kinda hate him. The best type of villain
Meanwhile the books never mentioned that Harry had guns bolted to his hands while wearing bear paw slippers and a bathrobe. Oh, wait, wrong Radcliffe movie ...
What's the name of the movie again?
I think it was called Guns Akimbo
Ah, yes thank you

To be honest, I never really liked Dumbledore (This is just my opinion). He left Harry with the Dursleys. There is and never will be any reason to leave a child in an abusive home. Never. And he left Sirius in Grimmauld Place even though he knew he was struggling. Dumbledore didn't have any use for Sirius because Sirius was loyal to Harry, not Dumbledore.
I think it shows the philosophy he had supported from his teenage years: "small" sacrifices are okay for the "greater good".
Seconded. I think it illustrates well that good does not always equal nice.

Luna Lovegood ?
The way Dumbledore left Harry with the dursleys, and made Sirius stay at grimmauld pla've and not leave- its exactly the kind of 'protection' he had learned to give Ariana, to lock them away for their own safety. Harry berates him for this at the end of the fifth book, tells him that "people don't like being locked up", and there are tears in dumbledores eyes. I'm sure in that moment he was thinking of Ariana
Super Carlin Brothers have a series of videos on Youtube where they discuss how Dumbledore made, tested, taught and eventually used Harry as the perfect weapon against Voldemort called "Dumbledore's Plan". It won't change your opinion about him, but it will give you some insight into his obsession of correcting the mistakes he made in the past with both Grindlewald and Tom Riddle before he became Voldemort to the cost of Harry.

In the case of Harry it can't be helped. Lily gave her life to protect Harry's life. In doing so, it invoked ancient magic of protection. Since Petunia was Lily's blood relative, Harry is safe in that home. Voldemort couldn't touch him there. That's why he had to go to Petunia's home during holidays - kind of recharge. And he's safe in Hogwarts. Once Voldemort breached that level of protection, he managed to send Dementors to the Muggle dwellings. If not for Mrs. Figg's testimony, Harry would've been expelled and it would've made it easier for Voldemort to bump him off. Dumbledore's mistake was blocking Harry during 5th year thinking Voldemort will stay away from Harry. Similarly with Sirius, Sirius was bored and wanted to contribute more - though it is amazing, Sirius has no self restraint. He must've exposed their operations. Remember Molly accused him of trying to live his youth through Harry?
You have a good point, this significant information about protection magic was sort of left out from movies too, though in Order of the Phoenix it wasn't Voldemort but Umbridge who sent Dementors against Harry. Consequences of expulsion would be as you describe either way. Sirius really needed to be locked because of his lack of self-restraint, otherwise it would end up badly for him sooner rather than later, which ended up badly anyway, because it's who he was.

Growing up with those rotten people created the strength in Harry that he would need to defeat Voldie. Harry is the amazing person he is because of his childhood; Dumbledore explains why he did it in the first movie. It was the right decision. Do you think he would have been as tough, as against cruelty, as defensive of the weak if he had grown up in a less hostile environment. Plus it really helped Dudley in the end to not be such a berk.

As a trans person myself, yes I dislike JK, but I also am able to watch the movies (Other than the 2nd fantastic beasts movie... that was horrible) and tolerate the books because I can seperate the art from the artist. It's totally fine if you like the books, and if you want to buy the books and not support JK, you can order them off of ebay, or Wish (I think? I have only ever ordered a chest binder off of Wish). I have a full set from years ago, (The ones with the cover art by Kazu Kubuishi) and my lil sis is just getting into them. She is OBSESSED. That was too much for a comment, wasn't it? Whatever
I want to say to her shhhhhhhhhh, no one actually wants to hear from you. They just want another book of equal quality.

One fact not mentioned here is that Hagid had his wand broken when he was expelled from Hogwarts. He wasn't supposed to do magic again! But he repaired his wand and disguised it as his umbrella.
I've said it once, I'll say it again. The movies are fine, great, enjoyable! I love the movies. Most of the time they do a pretty good job expressing the book even. However, unless you read the books, you CAN'T fully appreciate the series because there are so many minor details, foreshadowing, and character development that they had to leave out. I get that they can't make a 500+ page book into a decent length movie without leaving some stuff out, but if you really want to get all the good stuff about Harry Potter, read the books.
HEAR, HEAR! I've always thought it would be great to make HP into a television series with each book being one season of the series. They could go into so much more depth that way.
Hopefully they will soon, it's been a while since the films.
Exactly, if you're a fan, read the books ! That's why the title of this thread is irrelevent, real fans read the books.
Lord of the Rings was much closer to the source material, I think, but Harry Potter was awesome too.
Will never stop hating JKR for ruining her own beautiful creation by being so horrible and transphobic.
@blugeagua, I think you are slipping into hyperbole. No one wants to "get rid of transgendered people." I don't know all of Rowling's views so I can't speak for her views, but TERFs seem to believe that feminism should be for the biological women. A transwoman shouldn't get Woman of the Year ahead of all the female pioneers for simply transitioning. Girls shouldn't be afraid to participate in sports because they can't compete against transfemales and in several notable cases have become injured as a result. To some it must seem like once again men's needs and wants are being placed over the health and safety of women.
Well, I think it’s the readers’ right to take only what we like about a fictional creation. She does not have a say in how we see what she wrote, and so we don’t have to let her ruin what we like. Creator and the creation are not equals, she can have her own life and opinions, but she can’t control ours.

Thank you for the info everyone! Especially Aragorn II Elessar, couldn't have found a better video 😂 I kind of agree with Mohammad Ammar and Truth Monster. I have a different opinion of gender than individuals who prefer having gender labels (Apologies, I'm not sure if I'm wording correctly). I don't think people should be put down for those opinions, but I do think debates/discussions should be welcomed. Just because one person doesn't agree with your ideal idea doesn't mean they are a bad person. My opinions always change because we learn and adapt based on what we know about the particular subject, just like gender. I only read bits and pieces online so apologies as I don't have a full understanding of how deep this topic is in regards to her commentary on this subject.
Jk rowling thinks that society shouldn't have a one dimensional approach on transgender issuies.according to her, gender dysphoria is sometimes a phase, or a result of an underlying issuie such as autism. She also worries that in an effort to be more inclusive towards the trans community, people are beginning to define sex as a social construct rather than a biological reality. She stated her opinons rather respectfully in my opinion.
J.K. Rowling is a TERF (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist). That doesn't make her a transphobe. I'm no fan of J.K. Rowling as a person or most of her views personally, but I do think she should be allowed to question the orthodoxy without being burned for a witch (oh, the irony).
There’s a great video that I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
Esca Sav good
Mohammad Ammar, she can't seem to understand the difference between gender and sex. Gender IS a social construct in many ways for many people. But its the sex that is a biological fact.

Truth Monster, a TERF IS in fact a transphobe. They are well known for hating transgendered people and wanting to get rid of them. Also they may have feminist in their title, but TERF'S are most certainly NOT feminist.
Yes I agree that her comments and "essay" were dumb, rude, and extremely transphobic, but Harry Potter is a separate thing now. It's its own world now. And to be honest even if she wasn't transphobic, I think it should still be separated from her because she "revealed" a lot of things that no one wanted to know. (Like how they used to not use toilets, they just took a s**t on the floor then used magic to clean it??? WTF)

She's not transphobic and has never said anything transphobic. She has however been outspoken about women having equal rights. If you think women having equal rights is "transphobic" then that says a lot about YOU.
No, she says women's rights specifically exclude transwomen, and transwomen are a threat to cis women. She's toxic as hell, and has caused a LOT of pain and hurt.
Azziza: I don't think it's her stance on woman's rights per se that ppl are meaning. I can't remember it verbatim, but I know she made a statement implying that rights for women who have transitioned from male bodies are "not proper women" as they don't have a uterus, and that somehow she felt like them having rights encroached on her rights/identity as a woman.
Learn your s**t before you say stuff like that. She HAS said stuff like that, along with racist stuff. Again. Learn your s**t.

Right, because saying that trans women are men and that only women can have periods isn't transphobic? (That's not even the half of it though)
They left so much stuff out of the movies, and sometimes not even for reasonable time constraints that will happen for any book to movie adaptation. They often wasted it for stupid action scenes like that dragon chase in part 4.
I agree! I would also like to add... The fourth film was the worst! It just feels like they tried to cram in so much and things just jump from one scene to the next without any flow. Also, the hair. Why was everyone's hair such a mess?!
Folks, sorry to put a damper on the mood, but I’d like to introduce you to our newest troll.

Did anybody else know all of these already?
yes... people who read the books know these XD
I never really read the books. I guess I need too.
Oh my Yes, there's so much more detail that makes it really good! They could only tell a pared back version of the main plot in the movies, with essentially no sub plots
Shhh...... Let them learn from the books...
I was so looking forward to the end battle, as it’s fabulous in the book and they ruined it!
I so agree.
I watched the movies not read the books. Clearly there’s a whole new universe to discover and I need to get on board
people stop hatting on JK for stupid s**t... people have the same right to be transphobic as people have the right to be trans... appreciate the art and stfu...
hun I think there's a difference between the right to accept who you are and be yourself without being hated and having your life threatened for it, and being a decent f*****g human being and just accepting people as they are. Being transphobic is not a RIGHT, being trans IS. That's like saying Hitler had the right to commit genocide because he hated a specific people. By being transphobic and saying it's a right, you are trying to justify hating a specific group of people.
Dorin Miscenco haha
These are actually very important details! I wonder why the production company decided not to include these details.
No time for it in the movies, they were already too long and they could get in all the details sadly
Ohh ok. Thank you!
Every fan should know them?... yes the books were a richer experience than the movies...but too each their own.... but if you are getting your facts from a buzz feed article after watching the movies, it's time to pick up a book.
I never realized a lot of these
At this point, I may be disappointed in Rowling and be angry at her for her horrible views on race and transgendered issues. But I just try to separate the art from the artist. Do I greatly dislike Rowling? Yes. But do I still love the Wizarding World and hold a great place in my heart for it always? Yes I do and I will. I will continue to support the Wizarding World, but I no longer support Rowling. Thats all.
But they did tell him his dad was a stag. Serious said it when he was telling how he lupin and pettigrew were fighting by the tree and were turning into animals I swear he mentioned James turning into a stag so they could keep lupin company or watch him when he turned into a werewolf or whatever.

I don't know all of Rowling's views so I can't speak for her views, but TERFs seem to believe that feminism should be for the biological women.
Quaxaryar easy
Quaxaryar ?
This the first I've heard of this. Can I get context?

Google "JK Rowling Transphobia" I don't think I can post links here?

WTF)

Seriously? She hates transgendered people and has shown herself to be unaccepting of them. She can go f**k herself.

Surprise, surprise, she's a human being, not a goddess or a magical creature.

Yes... but being a human doesn't give you a right to be close minded and extremely insensitive and rude to other human beings. She's transphobic. That's just reality.

Just stop. We all have a chance to be better and JKR did not take that chance. She chose to be EXTREMELY transphobic.

Just ignore the trolls. They just want attention. If you give them attention you're only feeding them.
Great, yet another one.
Lyra Fortune ?
That looks like a Mexican Standoff of Stupid. None of them are saying anything intelligent. One is insisting that the Confederacy still exists.
