Nope! Not all guinea pigs are depressed and lonely by themselves. I had two guinea pigs, sisters. One (Greta), was almost abusive to her sister (Linny). Linny had a torn ear from when she was younger. After Greta died at four, Linny was fine, and healthy for the next four years, until she passed a week before her ninth birthday.

Who would want just one anyways? I'd probably take the whole supply of guinea pigs :)

Same in Denmark... It says something along the lines of "animals should be housed under consideration to their social behaviour and common practis" so basically it covers every social animal, with out mentioning them by species. And at the same time it covers none social animals...

Sweden has that same law. Not really sure what kind of animals it includes, though. Hamsters are included so I guess guineapigs are too.

This Swiss law is not only about Guinea pig, rabbits etc. As a Swiss people and a horse owner, it's against law to keep only one, because they are social animals. Same with donkeys, sheeps, goats, cows, etc. Every animal living in herds has to be kept with at least one companion. And it's strongly recommended to keep them outside as often as possible, to respect the way they live "into the wild". Having animals means respecting their nature.

This should be law everywhere. My Siamese are very social and they should always be in pairs or more. They're sleeping together as I write this. Some species just do much better when they're not the only one, even if people are close by.

Well they CAN die from loneliness so, yeah. Though then again giving any animal a buddy is always a good idea. (Well of course unless they're actually used to being alone, or have some sort of health problem)

Scientific tests also showed that they stress out when separated. They believe that by reducing the stress they will raise their milk yield. But considering cows are herd animals, this isn't really surprising.

I wonder how they would know that? So in their world, while swimming past one another, one could be a Phil and another a Jack? It would be like "Hey Phil, I found a warm spot over here, check it out.

Many prisons in the US have a program that has select inmates train shelter dogs, some for specific tasks such as disability service dogs. Marked improvement in inmate behavior and outlook have been noted in these programs and, of course, it improves the lives of the dogs involved.

Greyhounds As Pets NSW have a similar program at a women's correctional facility here in Sydney. The inmates help prepare ex-racing greys for life as a pet, teaching them things like how to go up & down stairs, basic obedience, etc. It's great for the dogs, as well as the inmates who can even earn a government-recognised certificate. (Our foster grey participated in this!) :)
