Would be helpful in other countries too - many homeless people have dogs and it could help keeping them fed and healthy while living on the street.

If people were responsible pet owners there would be few strays. I don't think many people these days should have pets. Pet owners should not burden those that don't want pet either. Pets belong to you. Fines should be very high for animal abuse and lack of care or control.

I would only agree with this if the food was laced with the rabies vax and a tranq so you can gather them all up and neuter them to reduce the stray population. this machine only increases the problem

I have to kind of agree with you. Spaying and neutering are a good investment for the future, for both animals and community members.

Who pays for the de-sexing to stop the unsustainable population growing? And I bet the rats love the free food too. And, homeless people, where's their vending machine?

Agreed! This machine doesn't solve the problem of stray animals, and if it offered water/food for people in return for garbage, I bet many homeless people would help clean the city. THAT would kill two birds with one stone!

Nice. Now they just need to make these for people. I'm sure many would complain, since, well, it's for people, but I think it would be great for the homeless

Totally agree! Was just about to write that comment. If only people sympathised with homeless people as much as they do with strat animals...

It dors not work with emty bottles. The idea is to put your leftovers (instead of throwing them away) and/or pour some water into the machine so that stray dogs & cats could eat

The animals are cared for by store owners and community members. The cats keep the mice population in check & the dogs protect the storefronts. It's a truly unique experience and everyone is so friendly to the animals and they love the attention. They are neutered by provided funds to keep the population in check.

Random act of kindness... catch one of these poor dogs, get it sterilised. return it A sterilised dog has less fights, less disease, and is less likely to get hit by a car, Repeat when u can afford it Also applies to cats.

I wonder how we get these in the USA? Will contact some local shelters and pass along! This would be good for the Portland homeless community who have animals.

What good idea. It will cut down on empty water bottles discarded on the ground.

Scientific tests also showed that they stress out when separated. They believe that by reducing the stress they will raise their milk yield. But considering cows are herd animals, this isn't really surprising.

I wonder how they would know that? So in their world, while swimming past one another, one could be a Phil and another a Jack? It would be like "Hey Phil, I found a warm spot over here, check it out.

Many prisons in the US have a program that has select inmates train shelter dogs, some for specific tasks such as disability service dogs. Marked improvement in inmate behavior and outlook have been noted in these programs and, of course, it improves the lives of the dogs involved.

Greyhounds As Pets NSW have a similar program at a women's correctional facility here in Sydney. The inmates help prepare ex-racing greys for life as a pet, teaching them things like how to go up & down stairs, basic obedience, etc. It's great for the dogs, as well as the inmates who can even earn a government-recognised certificate. (Our foster grey participated in this!) :)
