Guy Puts In His “Notice Of Immediate Resignation” After Boss Disregards Their Verbal Agreement, Warns Others To Always Write Things Down
One of the best lessons you’ll get from work industry veterans is this: have everything in writing. Trust is something that’s earned. And though the vast majority of your coworkers might be good people, nobody should be naive to think that everyone will be excellent. The same goes for bosses: you’re bound to run into a few great ones, as well as several terrible ones throughout your entire career.
One of the signs of a horrible manager (and, frankly, any person) is that they don’t keep their promises. In a workplace setting, that can cause a lot of chaos and resentment. After all if you informally agreed on certain terms, but they go back on their word when it’s convenient for them, barely any employee would want to stick around.
Redditor u/obdx2 is one such employee. They shared a bunch of screenshots of their message exchange with their boss on the r/antiwork subreddit. The two chatted about how much paid time off the OP had, and apparently, the boss changed their ‘handshake deal’ from two years back. The employee resigned then and there. Scroll down for the full story and to see how the internet reacted, dear Pandas.
Keeping a trail of work-related documents helps keep everyone on the same page

An employee shared how they quit after realizing that their boss lied to them and failed to keep their promise about paid time off
The employee sent over their notice of resignation after realizing that their boss had lied about the two weeks of paid time off. It just goes to show that empty promises are rife even in professional settings. When you find yourself in a situation where it’s your word against someone else’s, the odds are (unfortunately!) that the person with more influence will come out on top.
Instead of trying to fight the boss over the important issue, the redditor decided to cut their losses and quit. They saw that there was no longer any trust there and wanted to move on. Whatever the situation might look like, no matter how bad things get, many of you Pandas will probably agree—it would be civil for the boss to show up to say ‘goodbye.’ This type of closure can help both sides.
However, in the comments, the OP pointed out that the boss wasn’t even there when they showed up to return their key and collect their final paycheck. Some people avoid any type of conflict at all costs. And managers are no different. Instead of dealing with uncomfortable situations, they shy away. It would have been the mature thing to do to look your employee in the eye one last time as they quit. Alas! That did not happen.
What redditor u/obdx2 said on r/antiwork absolutely holds true: you have to have things in writing. Your job description, the terms of your employment, your wage, and how much paid time off you get each year—these are just some of the things that should be clearly stated in your contract. You can’t operate merely on good faith in professional settings. Keeping a paper trail is essential, no matter what sector of the job industry you might find yourself in.
Look, the fact of the matter is simple: people aren’t perfect. They’re fallible. They might forget about what they promised you. They might remember the conversations you had very differently, as more and more time goes by. In fact, every time that you remember an event from your past, your brain changes slightly.
“A memory is not simply an image produced by time traveling back to the original event—it can be an image that is somewhat distorted because of the prior times you remembered it. Your memory of an event can grow less precise even to the point of being totally false with each retrieval,” Donna Bridge, a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, explains.
What this means is that we need to have unchanging reminders of what everyone agreed on. Contracts, emails, notes: whatever gets the job done. That way, everyone’s on the same page. Literally.
The OP shared a few more details about what happened in the comments beneath their post
Here’s what some internet users said about the entire workplace drama
The US is HORRIBLE when it comes to vacation. Not only are our businesses stingy about how many days you get, but there is so much resentment from your boss and coworkers when you actually take your vacation days because our companies never hire enough people to make it easy to cover for anyone who's out. You're expected to schedule your vacation when it's convenient for everyone else, and they still make you feel guilty, like you're being lazy for not coming in. The "Puritan work ethic" is a nightmare that needs to die.
Totally agree. I feel sorry for the workers in the US. Here in NZ, the decent employers encourage you to take your leave each year, so that you actually get a break to relax, unwind and refresh. Also if you don't, it's a cost they have to carry over to the following year, which they don't want to do. Where I work we are chased up if we have too much leave untaken. Some staff are too busy or too work-minded to take leave so it soon adds up, then the bosses are chasing them to take it. Glad I live in NZ.
Load More Replies...Not sure if it's a labor law thing, but in Canada everywhere I've worked since the mid-80s you got 1 week PTO and you earned more the longer you worked there. I'm in retail and after 15 years I get three weeks PTO a year. The US is a capitalist-run dystopia with the oligarchs fooling the slave population that "they're the best country in the world" so the don't question anything.
Most of us who work here in the 🇺🇸 know employers are here to screw us out of our time, sweat, and wages. Now they're 'stunned' that there are so many people telling them to FO. Even $15 an HR is a freaking JOKE with the housing cost rape, and even fast food is too damn expensive to purchase anymore.
Load More Replies...Writing things down saved my a*s with my last job. Last employer tried to claim I was an independent contractor so he wouldn't have to pay my unemployment. Had a phone hearing about it and everything. I had sent the H.O the LETTER OF HIRE I had my previous employer write up and sign and also a picture of the flyer he posted at my college (which I think he did secretly because there was ONE with no date stamp and all flyers being posted in the art building need to be approved and date stamped by the front office. I know. I've done it.) that stated he was looking for a part time EMPLOYEE. Dude was nuts.
It genuinely baffles me how any companies function in the USA. With such poor employment terms employees must be permanently exhausted both physically and mentally. Here in the UK I have a permanent employment contract, all terms and conditions written out, including the right to 36 days paid leave, and up to 12 months paid sickness leave. If I was female, I'd also have 12 months paid maternity leave too. If my company wanted to make me redundant they have to give me 90 days notice and are legally not allowed to back-fill the position. It isn't perfect here, and the statutory minimums are really bad (only 28 paid leave days guaranteed by law for instance). but one thing I KNOW is that my employer can't simply decide to change my employment terms on a whim.
Companies function here by hemorrhaging labor and training costs, and inflating their worth on paper in any way they think they can get away with.
Load More Replies...Your. Boss. Is. Not. Your. Friend. Ever. I don't actually know a single person that this hasn't happened to. In writing, in ink, everything, everytime. And yes, Canada and most of Europe, it is a wage slavery hellscape over here for most of us.
That wasnt always the case. My mom's boss was definitely her friend for decades. She hired her with no experience in an office to be the second receptionist and bookkeeper for her just starting to really expand real estate company - at the time just herself, her husband, her son (a couple years older than my mom), 2 agents and a part time receptionist in a second floor space of her home. My mom was just out of college, deciding she did not want to teach (hated student teaching) and starting over. Arlene took her under her wing and kept encouraging and paying for new trainings until she was the full time office manager, an agent, and thier internal accountant and payroll department. She became my godmother and stayed close to us when she retired and gave the company to her son who is also mom's good friend. My mom and I were 2 of the last people to see Arlene before she died a few months after her 92nd birthday and we were included and treated like family in her will.
Load More Replies...I retired this year from a company that has an unlimited PTO policy. As long as people don't abuse it, it's all good. My director was adamant about not doing work while on vacation. Best place I ever worked. I'd still be there if I hadn't been working for the last 50 years. And the commute was shorter. There are good companies out there
Unions are such a good thing. I get 5 weeks at Xmas and a week each 2 week break (I work in a school and we have 4 terms). I work those week hours up during my work time but having 8 weeks of a year is awesome. Oh and 10 sick days a year and long service leave after 7 years working.
After 15 years you get 3 weeks PTO - What the ever loving F**K. Even an entry level job in the U.K. comes with 4 weeks off - plus bank holidays. I think after 15 years I was up to something like 32 days a year ... plus bank holidays of course.
Let me tell you more then what happened here. Our (ex) company had a policy to communicate the company matters via email. I have a habit of keeping/writing my daily progress in online sheet. My boss wanted to fire me and couldn't find any valid reason to do so. My boss started to instruct me via Whatsapp. I started to download and started to put a saved link in the progress. Suddenly one day (in a meeting), Boss asked me about a certain task that why I did it that way? I told him that you told me. Every body felt that boss was not happy with my answer. He told me that He never ever do such instructions. I opened my progress and sent the voice link to all member's email. The next day Boss gave me one month verbal notice and asked me to find a new job. Company no more requires me.
My husband had a heart attack...at work. Had to get someone to take over (only employee for that shift) before he could be put in the ambulance. ICU time was taken from the meager vacation time he had and he was expected back at work before he even started cardiac rehab. Yeah, best medical care.
You guys in usa are pretty lucky. I'm from asia. My previous company literally broke a written contract, and when employees confront them with written proof, they just apologized and said "yeah, guys. I know this is not what we promised, but please understand the company situation and hang in there. But for now, we cannot do what's in the contract. Again, sorry guys". We can't press charges or anything like that because in this country we will lose.
Hard won experience: Always use email to communicate at work. Follow up phone calls and face to face agreements with an email confirming the terms of the conversation. The E in email stands for EVIDENCE.
I work for the State of Florida. We get 4 hours Annual Leave and 4 hours Sick Leave every pay period. If there is a holiday during that pay period, you get 8 hours Holiday Leave. Which is great if you're sick or something and need Leave time. You get two back to back days off, and the place I work at has mandatory doubles. So, say you go to work from 10:15 pm until 6:15 am, and during that time, someone calls out for first shift (which is from 6:00 am until 2:30 pm)....if it's your turn to do the double, you have to stay until 2 pm or 2:30 pm. And even after you get off work at 2:30, you still have to come back in at 10:15 to do your shift. I have been able to get a day or two extra off, but the only time I'm able to use my leave time is if I'm sick or in the hospital. I hurt my ankle about 2 months ago. I've been out of work because I can't lift the required weight in order to work full time, and they won't do light duty for me this time.
So I got paid from my leave time I had built up. I've been out of work for 6 weeks now and this past pay period, I only have 4 leave hours. So I'll be getting $64 before taxes. Plus our overtime is not paid with our main check. It's paid to us about 10 days later. So, our overtime check is taxed as well. But the benefits are awesome so that's one thing that we have going for us.
Load More Replies...Wow, 7 days! I get 30 days annual leave a year and 6 months sick at full pay and 6 months at half pay. I do realise I’m very lucky though
Same in Canada. We act like we're a better country, but we're not. Had a boss who wanted me to use pirated software, made me use my home computer as my work computer IN THE OFFICE. Then rather using a moving company, had the staff move the workplace, and then fired me the day before my three months probation because I was feeling guilty for using pirated software. Also broke into my computer that night, after he convinced to work the week. Canned me on a Monday. Tried to contact a coworker for what I should do, and GOT A CALL FROM HIM 20 MINUTES LATER SAYING I CAN'T TALK TO ANYONE.
On the topic of verbal agreements, my mother worked on the pto of an elementary school that me and my siblings all went to. The principal that transferred when i was decently young (we’ll call her Ms H) was an absolute control freak. She had to be part of *every* event and had to be hands on with all student causes (clubs, morning announcements, etc) which drove everyone nuts. My mother has worked with her for a number of years now, and she has a tendency to tell someone one thing, then run off and say that they agreed on something else, throwing them under the bus. After the first time this happened, my mother got everything from her in writing and called her out. Needless to say that they don’t like each other very much. I can hear my mother talking s**t about her on the regular, and since I don’t like that woman either I join her.
It is good to write important things down. In religious school, we were taught that documents should be written up for important matters, like the debt that people owed you, for an instance. If a person wants to borrow some money from you, and promises to pay you back at a later date, you shouldn't fully hold onto their words, especially if they are borrowing a large amount of money. Instead, you should write up an agreement between you both, and finish it with signature from both parties. This way, they cannot claim that they never borrowed any money from you, because you've got the proof, which you can easily bring to the authority if needed.
ALWAYS get anything to do with work in writing. If they ask you why say it's so that both parties understand their expectations of each other and that a written agreement serves to protect them too. Any decent employer/company will understand that. If they don't: red flag and gtfo. See also: "We're all like family here".
Last job I had I got 28 days, but that included holidays. You could actually come in and work on holidays if you wanted to. It was a desk job that involved mainly paperwork.
as someone who is used to 30+ days of paid vacation and unlimited paid sick leave I can't understaqnd why Us American workers are not up in arms for their rights 365 days/year. This s**t is unbelievable.
I was burned a few times with PTO so I grabbed a calendar and did some math, we usually get 2 months with 5 pay weeks out of the year, don't spend those checks. I plan ahead and save them for 4 weeks off and just take the time off, just not all at the same time. 3 day weekend here, 4 day weekend there. Funny enough my boss gave me the idea. Says it's a waste to take all the time off together if you're not leaving the country and 4 days off in a row is usually just enough to unwind. He was right
If you cannot get it in writing, send a follow up email from your work account and CC it to your personal account. If you have a hostile manager (I've had a few) FIND A WAY TO NOTE THEIR BEHAVIOUR! I used Google Calendars and still have notes from 2015-2017 regarding a sh*t boss I had. The guy would always tell me he would send an email, never send one, and then tell me he never said that. I started with follow up emails, and those "disappeared" from my company email. But lo! I had the original forwarded to my personal one and he DID NOT LIKE THAT. So cover your butts, send follow ups, CC to your personal email, and take notes. And for the record, I'm in the Deep South Bible Belt region where you can be fired at will. So ALWAYStake notes.
Yes, yes. We all know the US is sh!t to work and live in. I'm still staying here though. Now if BP could find a way to, possibly, find something else to diss.
What people don't understand is that 7 days pto is laid vacation, you can still take unpaid vacation. In Italy this is the norm with "contratti a progetto" you only get paid for thr hours you show up. No paid holidays, maternity, nada. Yes Europe has a lot of public holidays but it's not the same.
Kmart is gone for a reason (or 5). They'd EMPHASIZE how you'd get one full week of PAID vacation after just one year. But when you put in your ONE MONTH'S notice (required), they'd CUT YOUR HOURS down to single digits per week, for the WHOLE month!!! Even though I was working (literally) up to 39¾ hours a week until then, bc 40hrs means that they MUST pay benefits too. Because they averaged out your hours for the last month to figure out how much you'd be "paid" on your "vacation". So, unsurprisingly, practically Every. Single. Person. QUIT after that "vacation"!!!
I live in a right to work state. I have the right to work and they have the right to fire me any time
What about a contract? Don‘t you do contracts in the US? This is the first time I hear of something like this
If not already in writing, send an email with this: "To confirm: boss, you have agreed to X (vacation, bonus, virtually working, whatever)." If this changes, please let me know so I can prepare." Companies can change things, happens all the time. Professionals will give you a reasonable heads up about the change.
Do not trust HR. Do not ever trust HR. So repeat after me "I will never trust HR".
This angers me so much and I realize how grateful I should be to live in Germany. 6 weeks PTO and we have contracts that state all the important things. Its far from perfect here but at least we can catch a real break.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the boss said the guy already got 10 paid days off that year. If you work Monday to Friday that would equal 2 weeks off. I know the boss said he had 7 days in writing, but 10 paid days off IS 2 weeks.
But 10 days of vacation is two weeks...unless he means they agreed to 14 days of vacation, which is not clear from the post. 14 days of vacation is nearly three weeks.
The US is HORRIBLE when it comes to vacation. Not only are our businesses stingy about how many days you get, but there is so much resentment from your boss and coworkers when you actually take your vacation days because our companies never hire enough people to make it easy to cover for anyone who's out.
