The holiday season is upon us: we’ll soon be feasting upon pumpkins, followed by turkeys (plump and with tiny pilgrim hats), and, well, more turkeys (plumper and with tiny Santa hats). Since Halloween is closing in on us like the Grim Reaper, you’re probably thinking about what costume to wear if you haven’t ordered or sewn your own already.

We’d rather dress to the nines as Castiel (some of us already wear trench coats almost daily) than pretend to be some niche character from some show nobody’s ever seen.

There are many traditions associated with Halloween and one of them has to do with keeping away fairies if you’re Irish or have ancestors back in the Land of a Thousand Welcomes. According to local folklore, if you don’t want your things stolen by those darn pesky fairies on October 31, you should dress up, carve faces into pumpkins, light blazing bonfires, and keep yourself surrounded by black cats. Otherwise, the fairies might get you. In fact, we heartily recommend surrounding yourself with cats throughout the year. Just in case.

The girl who dressed up as Wednesday Addams and people just asked her why she didn't dress up for Halloween reminded me of when something similar happened to me... I dressed up as a Pink Lady (from Grease). I made my clothes and hair 50's style--I wore a high-waisted A-line skirt and a high-necked short sleeved sweater top (tucked into the skirt to give the classic 50's new look silhouette), and did my hair up in a high pony with a headband, and I had a Pink Ladies jacket left over from a high school production of Grease... but everyone who saw me at work just said "you look very nice today!" and I had to turn around to show them the Pink Ladies iron-on lettering on the back of my jacket. Oh well.
Laura, most people aren't all there upstairs, you know. Grease (the original) was my FAV. It was the only movie I saw about 4 times & I couldn't even afford to go to the first one. I wonder what they would have said had you dressed up as Olivia in those skin TIGHT pants LOL I'm sure you looked GREAT :)

Nah, Halloween is about being anything you want to be.
Well, in truth it isn't.
Halloween was originally the celtic way to celebrate the new year's eve, when the world of the dead joined the world of the living bringing cold, in winter. In spring the earth will eventually flourish again because it rested. People will stay at home, crafting things, talking about the past, stories and myths. When christians popped up wanting to eliminate all the pagan things, they decided to merge it whit the all saints day (first of november). It became halloween when irish people moved to america because of a huge famine, and it became this now familiar holiday mostly because of films. The name originally was Samhain, spelled sow-in, where sow is pronounced like cow.
We are celebrating that the portals to the otherworld opens and mystical and horrible creatures can enter our world. It's save to stay at home. The tradition why we put on spooky/scary costumes has evolved, so that you can move around at night amongst the otherworldly creatures without being recognized. Please don't forget the mythology of samhain, which inclued the teir nos ysprydnos (three ghost nights) in Wales. Also you forgot to mention the blood sacrifices to Cenn Cruach. In other cultures it's the night in which death and life meet. Please, when you try to use cultural history as an evidence, mention ALL of it, not only those parts, which underline your argument.

People take Halloween so seriously! I've never known anyone dress up other than the occasional mask, face paint or store bought costume. If some of these arrived at my door I'd totally freak out!

I'm old enough that we used to just buy the cheap costumes from K-mart and call it good. My son picked out a prisoner costume - a jumpsuit with the white and black stripes and the little cotton striped hat. I painted a thin mustache on him and out we went. And people would say, "And what are you dressed up as?" He would answer "A zebra!!" I didn't have the heart to tell him....

I’m not offended. A lot of these costumes are awesome. I just think Halloween is a holiday for kids and they should dress up as characters they like, rather than parents making it about themselves.
