It all started three years ago. A woman walked into colorist Jack Martin's California salon and told him that she had been dyeing her hair from gray to brown with at-home box color every 3-4 weeks for years. But she didn't want to worry about her hair color that often; she's retired, enjoying the great outdoors, and wanted to save as much time as possible.
Jack Martin accepted the challenge, and they immediately started bouncing ideas. Eventually, the two of them decided to dye her hair silver, which would give her natural gray hue slightly more polish, which would allow the woman to visit salons less. When everything was said and done, she loved the results. Martin did too. In fact, he was so pleased with his work that he posted the transformation on Instagram. And people noticed. The picture went viral, bringing Martin clients with similar requests.

"My clients with natural gray hair come two or three times a year, instead of every few weeks," Martin told Allure. The freedom that comes with such a stunning look really is appealing, not to mention the empowering emotions that come with owning your natural gray hair.Martin usually does these transformations over one ten-hour-long session.
As he explained on Instagram, the process starts with using a color extractor to remove any remaining artificial color. Then, while preserving the gray roots, Martin bleaches the rest of the head to prep hair for the new silver color.
Next comes the crucial part. Martin bases the new color on the hair's natural gray pattern. He even asks clients to come in with three to four inches of their roots grown out, so he can analyze the natural coloring of their hair. He then re-creates the pattern on the entire hairdo.
"Some clients have salt and pepper mostly in the front and the back is darker, so I match that and add some dark to it," Martin said. And just like that, about ten hours later, clients leave his salon enjoying the blend of their natural hue.

Lovely hair, but I think is every person's choice to dye their hair or not, I would not take this as the best option for everyone. More than that, every hair looks nice after a professional blow and dry, do you think those ladies will afford or have time for professional styling on a daily/wekly basis? Looking at these pictures "before" and "after", I would dare to say no, like most of us. So, it is easy to sell something when you show only the ideal image, not the real one, from our daily life. In my country we say "the packaging sells the goods".

I love the look of grey and silver hair. And these transformations are all gorgeous. But these women just traded one dye job for another. Their own greys won't necessarily look that vibrant or have such depth. I have a few grey hairs (10?) around my temple - they started coming in after a particularly stressful year. I have no intention of dying my hair, but I may someday decide to. As long as we praise both choices, I'm fine with it. We don't need to vilify women who chose to dye their hair.

Ten years ago I asked my hair stylist/master colorist to do this with my hair. He said it couldn't be done. I didn't understand why not, so I suffered through years of growing out the dyed hair. This is just what I wanted to do.
Hair colour has also come a really long way in the last 10 years, particularly with the introduction of products like Olaplex. It is incredibly difficult to lift this much pigment from hair without damaging the ever loving s**t out of it, because to get to grey, you essentially need the hair as close to unpigmented as possible for the gray to take. You can also see in many of the pictures that the quality of his clients hair is totally changed, which leads me to believe that he's focusing on restoring the health of the hair while he's colouring, which would be with a product like Olaplex (I keep dropping this name and I'm sure there are other products similar but none that I'm aware of). I think, at the time, what your stylist told you might have been correct and the truth.

I love this series. I had. A traumatic experience when I was 11 and started having white hair. Now it almost covers my whole hair and I dye it every 3 weeks, it's exhausting. I might do silver hair dye just to let it grow in. This definitely is an inspiration for me.

While all of the women look beautiful in the 'after' pics it is obvious that they have also had makeup professionally applied. That makes a huge difference too.
Not only makeup, but the after photo is taken with professional lighting. The lighting in the the "before" shot is under bright overhead fluorescent lighting which is unflattering to anyone, and the "after" shot in soft and reflective light. Also, some work was done in post-processing in regards to warmer skin tones and some other tricks. It's easy to see the difference if you look at the women wearing colored shirts, the richer colors from the "after" photos are very apparent.

These look gorgeous. But someone on here mentioned how long it takes to get the original colour out of the hair and it's true. I went with the above colours. First all the colour had to be taken out of my hair. Then the silver/charcoal colour had to be put into my hair. The secret is to leave the roots a bit darker but to put the silver in highlight form. This causes a blend that, when roots grow out, it will naturally blend in with the new colour. Due to Covid, I had mine coloured in March and it still looks good. And... I had to change my shampoo and conditioner to one for Platinum hair. Otherwise the silver goes yellow over time. Not a cheap process, but if done correctly does NOT have to be done once a month.
Yet again, I can't stand the title. He's not MAKING them embrace their grey hair. A client wanted to get out of the loop of coloring her hair and he helped do what she asked.

Raising 3 boys and a husband, I felt I earned it. Comparing a pic of my mom about the same age as I am now, I have more grey than she did. Still have pepper though. My brown always had ashy hilights so it blends right in with the grey. Congrats to these ladies for giving up the dye.
I had Breast Cancer in 2012, the Chemo took my brown hair and made it gray!!! Yay, immediately decided no more perms or coloring, I really like it now!!!

These women are silver vixens... looks lovely in comparison to tired dye jobs. Dyed hair looks good until the roots of the original hair are exposed. My mother naturally has silver hair like some of these women and in recent years her sisters have stopped dying their hair too. Healthier locks, for sure! I am graying at the temples and think it makes me look rather more distinguished.
Everyone should do with their own hair whatever they want. If you like it, you feel confident, you look yourself and like what you see, you will be beautiful. What you want for yourself is the best.
I stopped colouring my hair years ago, allowing the grey to take hold. I'm not kidding when I say that so many people compliment me and ask where I've had it done! I also cut it myself, and have most of my life from being a teenager and forced to go to the hairdressers by my well-meaning mother. I cried when I saw what Sweeney Todd had done, so not do it myself. If I want a bit of colour I streak pink and/or blue hair wax through it.
This weird aversion to gray hair has always confused me. You know... having gray hair isn't what makes you look older it's your old face. Pretty much all these women actually look better and somewhat younger.

No one goes grey evenly like that, though. I know several women who have decided that since they're mostly grey anyway and decided to go that way - but that does NOT MEAN that they aren't coloring their hair. One friend spends about $250.00 every month to maintain that colour.

As a hairdresser we do this in our salon too but what most people don’t realize is that these transformations are being lifted with chemicals and strong bleach and disguised with toners and low lights that fade. The cost to keep it all in good condition and to maintain the same polished blow dry and professional make up would not be possible for most woman. It is just as much maintenance sometimes more to “look beautifully grey”. Hats off to him making a lot of money from people who think they look more naturally beautiful! 😆 There is no ease options when it comes to hair! Just take the most financially sound maintenance advice you can from a good hairdresser. 👍🏼
Very lovely, but don’t you have to apply bleach to get this look? I’m not a hair profession at all, just from the ones I’ve observed doing this has to bleach their hair first.
It doesn't work that way at all. It's a double process system where the pigment of the hair is removed and then it's dyed on top of that.

I'm now letting my dyed hair grow out and can see a mix of a few mostly white streaks with saltand pepper. Reading the comments by Rokas (who posted the article), I prefer to do it without a hairdresser. I've always cut, dyed and styled my own hair and even had a couple of hairdressers tell me it looked professional. ---- What would put me off going to a good hairdresser like Jack is the total time from start to finish - 10 hours!! - and the use of first a colour extractor, next having it bleached and then the silver colour added. The hair looks lovely afterwards but I can't believe it's good for the hair. The chemical smell of hair salons makes me feel ill and being in one for 10 hours is more than I could handle. ---- The after photos are lovely and kudos to the ladies who choose to do so. Just not for me though.
Most people look younger with grey/silver/white hair, rather than dark, dyed hair. The dark hair usually looks harsh. But to each her own. I stopped coloring my hair years ago and I love it.
I think this is one of the best hair trends in a while. Not only do all these ladies look striking but it also in a way destigmatizes grey hair. But then, I've also always been fond of silver/white hair since my mother has had all white hair since long before I was born.
super expensive and long process. you can just let it go gray naturally. it took me about 2.5 years. It's normally shoulder length, so I got it cut closer to the nape of my neck and just got more trims than normal and wore it up a lot. It's still darker than I was expecting, so I'll get to watch it go all silver over time. One of the best things I've done for myself. I love it and so does my husband. so easy and the silver is gorgeous with my dark hair.

They're all stunning BUT this is not a low maintenance look! They probably have to visit the salon often for touch ups and they can't do it by themselves anymore. So in the end it will probably cost them more time and money.

It seems like a lot of these women were already dying their hair to cover the gray. I think they made a bold choice to embrace the gray and stop fighting the inevitable. I've got a few gray hairs, but I dye my hair because I don't like how dark it is. I think that if you think you'd like the final result, why not go full on gray. I might even do it someday. Yes, wonderful that some guy has decided that women should go natural. However, notice that the women in the after pictures have make-up and great lighting. Grey hair washes out your color. I have been going silver/grey since I was 16. It does not look as "glamorous" as these women do. Note that they not only have their "natural" colors but it is all "highlighted" on each woman and the hair styles are much more flattering.

While I am a natural blonde, I always kept it a few shades lighter but started going gray at 40 turning my beautiful blonde hair slightly blue. Ugh.. It only took a few trips of needing double processing before I made the choice to let it go natural and just embrace it... It's now been almost 8 years and two racing strips appearing on my head and I have honestly never loved my hair more. These photos are such great examples of how natural real is better at least for us older ladies anyway, every single one of these ladies looks absolutely amazing after, bravo for truth!
More photoshopist than colorist. 99% of the gray roots in 'Before' photos have been drastically dramatized and 100% created in some. ALL the 'After' pics have been heavily retouched. Bad advertising.

These are all gorgeous and an amazing way to grow out your colour! I’m not ready quite yet, but when I am this is the route I will take!
What I like is its like a second chance to grow into when you are young and start getting hair you grow into it and as you mature it gets more shaped and defined to how you set it but doing this as you get older it goes from absolutely stunning dye choice to a nice perfect transition you were ready for and can take in stride.

I've actually wondered whether I would have grey hair or not, since it's a gene in my family to get it as young as high school age. No signs yet, but I'm all for it.
I decided to stop dying my gray hair now a seven, eight years ago, against the advice of my hairdresser who was convinced that gray hair would have aged me. maybe it is also like that, I did not make such a beautiful coloring as in those photos, I limited myself to making my hair grow natural, but at least stress since then. I no longer worry about regrowth, my hair is much healthier and less stressed, in summer I no longer have a rope basket on my head instead of hair, when I leave the sea. and if I fancy some color on gray, there are a lot of coloring shampoos that can give me a burst of color without having to go to the hairdresser or do dyes. after a dozen washes it is almost completely gone and I go back to my old natural color.

It's nice to know fashion gives women options again, when it comes to aging. Perhaps in time, it will be acceptable for women to grow old naturally even on our screens. And the pictures are great, but did we need so many of them ?
The grey's win every time here. The blonde colors especially look drab, lifeless, and washes them out, making them look older. Where as the silvers make them look youthful and vibrant. Long hair and shorter, they're all fabulous.
As someone who adores gray hair on women, this makes me just a little sad. Frankly, I'm not all that crazy about my own gray hair. Nevertheless, it's what I was given so I embrace it. If these women had simply done this to begin with, it would have saved them a lot of time and effort.
All these ladies have long, thick hair. They are all attractive by conventional mores. That being said, the most styles are long and beautiful.
I think most of these photos are misleading. In the before shots, the ladies aren't posed, have little to no make-up and aren't smiling or dressed as nicely. I think color changes aren't as important as styling, healthy hair learning techniques and body confidence. Obviously, they are going to look much prettier when they are sitting posed, smiling, fresh professional make-up applied, and are being filmed professional style with a neutral background and probably photo retouched. IMO, Not a fair comparison.
It looks amazing right after the hairdresser, but it takes a lot of maintenance after that. Grey hair looks good only if it is well groomed.
Would love to see more short hair adjustments; oh and if I looked like ANY of these women, it wouldn't matter what color their hair is. TEN hours for the transformation? it is done long time ago...at least in Spain..where women used to go to a hairsalon every week...then came the high lights fashion... and those women anted to look like the young one's...when i came to live to Australia... they call it the blue rinse! i think is great and clean and stylish..and even if you do it to young girls...they will look stunning! my share as a stylish hairdresser of the past!
These people look good, very beautiful but almost all of them look older with gray hair than if they had just colored the gray part to match their natural color. Most people color their grays so they don’t look prematurely aged

OK, as a hairdresser that's been at this for 40 years wants to know how this was done! I'm sorry there is no way that hair was bleached or a color removal service got some of those heads of hair back to their natural state without HOURS of torture to the hair. That much effort would also DESTROY the cuticle layer pretty badly. Amazing results but I wanna know that secret!
It's just as much work to go that gray as opposed to dying your hair. And a number of them look ludicrous.
Probably the best part of the transformation is that he gave them a style that was more adult compared to many of the ones they had before - which mimicked those of twenty-somethings.
Even if there is no Photoshop involved (which I doubt) this isn't their natural hair. They will also need regular salon visits and a very expensive silver shampoo to maintain the lack of yellow. Also, grey hair needs make up so that you look good and not old.
Grey hair does not need more make up than any other hair color "to look good". Only those who put up make up to look good think that. And silver shampoo isn't expensive at all.

A lot of these women don't look old enough to have gray hair....I know it's been a fad lately for young people to get their hair dyed gray. Load More Replies... I can remember my mom dying her hair to cover grey. She got tired of it and quit doing it. She had gorgeous salt and pepper hair. It never bothered me to go grey. Raising 3 boys and a husband, I felt I earned it. Comparing a pic of my mom about the same age as I am now, I have more grey than she did. Still have pepper though. My brown always had ashy hilights so it blends right in with the grey. Congrats to these ladies for giving up the dye.
I had Breast Cancer in 2012, the Chemo took my brown hair and made it gray!!! Yay, immediately decided no more perms or coloring, I really like it now!!!

These women are silver vixens... looks lovely in comparison to tired dye jobs. Dyed hair looks good until the roots of the original hair are exposed. My mother naturally has silver hair like some of these women and in recent years her sisters have stopped dying their hair too. Healthier locks, for sure! I am graying at the temples and think it makes me look rather more distinguished.
Everyone should do with their own hair whatever they want. If you like it, you feel confident, you look yourself and like what you see, you will be beautiful. What you want for yourself is the best.
I stopped colouring my hair years ago, allowing the grey to take hold. I'm not kidding when I say that so many people compliment me and ask where I've had it done! I also cut it myself, and have most of my life from being a teenager and forced to go to the hairdressers by my well-meaning mother. I cried when I saw what Sweeney Todd had done, so not do it myself. If I want a bit of colour I streak pink and/or blue hair wax through it.
This weird aversion to gray hair has always confused me. You know... having gray hair isn't what makes you look older it's your old face. Pretty much all these women actually look better and somewhat younger.

No one goes grey evenly like that, though. I know several women who have decided that since they're mostly grey anyway and decided to go that way - but that does NOT MEAN that they aren't coloring their hair. One friend spends about $250.00 every month to maintain that colour.

As a hairdresser we do this in our salon too but what most people don’t realize is that these transformations are being lifted with chemicals and strong bleach and disguised with toners and low lights that fade. The cost to keep it all in good condition and to maintain the same polished blow dry and professional make up would not be possible for most woman. It is just as much maintenance sometimes more to “look beautifully grey”. Hats off to him making a lot of money from people who think they look more naturally beautiful! 😆 There is no ease options when it comes to hair! Just take the most financially sound maintenance advice you can from a good hairdresser. 👍🏼
Very lovely, but don’t you have to apply bleach to get this look? I’m not a hair profession at all, just from the ones I’ve observed doing this has to bleach their hair first.
It doesn't work that way at all. It's a double process system where the pigment of the hair is removed and then it's dyed on top of that.

Reading the comments by Rokas (who posted the article), I prefer to do it without a hairdresser. I've always cut, dyed and styled my own hair and even had a couple of hairdressers tell me it looked professional. ---- What would put me off going to a good hairdresser like Jack is the total time from start to finish - 10 hours!! - and the use of first a colour extractor, next having it bleached and then the silver colour added. The hair looks lovely afterwards but I can't believe it's good for the hair. The chemical smell of hair salons makes me feel ill and being in one for 10 hours is more than I could handle. ---- The after photos are lovely and kudos to the ladies who choose to do so. Just not for me though.
Most people look younger with grey/silver/white hair, rather than dark, dyed hair. The dark hair usually looks harsh. But to each her own. I stopped coloring my hair years ago and I love it.
I think this is one of the best hair trends in a while. Not only do all these ladies look striking but it also in a way destigmatizes grey hair. But then, I've also always been fond of silver/white hair since my mother has had all white hair since long before I was born.
super expensive and long process. you can just let it go gray naturally. it took me about 2.5 years. It's normally shoulder length, so I got it cut closer to the nape of my neck and just got more trims than normal and wore it up a lot. It's still darker than I was expecting, so I'll get to watch it go all silver over time. One of the best things I've done for myself. I love it and so does my husband. so easy and the silver is gorgeous with my dark hair.

They're all stunning BUT this is not a low maintenance look! They probably have to visit the salon often for touch ups and they can't do it by themselves anymore. So in the end it will probably cost them more time and money.

I've got a few gray hairs, but I dye my hair because I don't like how dark it is. I think that if you think you'd like the final result, why not go full on gray. I might even do it someday. It looks awesome!
Yes, wonderful that some guy has decided that women should go natural. However, notice that the women in the after pictures have make-up and great lighting. Grey hair washes out your color. I have been going silver/grey since I was 16. It does not look as "glamorous" as these women do. Note that they not only have their "natural" colors but it is all "highlighted" on each woman and the hair styles are much more flattering.

The pandemic has done wonders for society, people FINALLY saying, "IDGAF what society thinks!" living life as they best see fit. Women chopped off their hair women let their natural grey show, women wear leggings, sneakers, and other comfortable clothes to work, etc. Good. Screw the "rules".
I absolutely hate the gray hair on me, and it washes out my face... Mine is getting so fine and frail with so much of life's stress and severe grief, depression, cancer and ptsd... you make all these women look so beautiful with the haircuts the styling and the special makeup too not everyone can afford that...
I always wanted to have gray hair. I'm 63 now and just starting to get a few strands here or there. My mom was the same way, She passed at 72 and didn't have much gray either. Seeing these lovely ladies and their beautiful dyed gray hair it gives me hope that maybe I might get that gray I've been hoping for. for so many years.
Let's not deceive the viewers by shooting the "after" photos in STUDIO LIGHTING (and a makeup artist to enhance faces using shadow and highlight makeup) versus the unflattering lighting in the 'before' photos. Every one looks better with properly applied makeup and professional studio lighting.

Wow im loving it , im at a stage where i cant seem to do anything bu embrace my grey hair strands, i call it the salt and pepper look , im allergy to the dark hair dye so havent been able to even attempt to dye my hair after a severe reaction to the dark dye , they look more youthful and vibrant love it 😀

While I am a natural blonde, I always kept it a few shades lighter but started going gray at 40 turning my beautiful blonde hair slightly blue. Ugh.. It only took a few trips of needing double processing before I made the choice to let it go natural and just embrace it... It's now been almost 8 years and two racing strips appearing on my head and I have honestly never loved my hair more. These photos are such great examples of how natural real is better at least for us older ladies anyway, every single one of these ladies looks absolutely amazing after, bravo for truth!
More photoshopist than colorist. 99% of the gray roots in 'Before' photos have been drastically dramatized and 100% created in some. ALL the 'After' pics have been heavily retouched. Bad advertising.
I really like it, all of them they all look beautiful! They look like they also have thicker hair. How about if you have a thinner hair? Would it work also? I am 57 Asian and I have been dealing with a thin hair since I am 36. And I don't know what to do anymore. Hair dying makes it worse. I am not going to give up but I would appreciate some advice on how thank you!

These are all gorgeous and an amazing way to grow out your colour! I’m not ready quite yet, but when I am this is the route I will take!
What I like is its like a second chance to grow into when you are young and start getting hair you grow into it and as you mature it gets more shaped and defined to how you set it but doing this as you get older it goes from absolutely stunning dye choice to a nice perfect transition you were ready for and can take in stride.

I decided to stop dying my gray hair now a seven, eight years ago, against the advice of my hairdresser who was convinced that gray hair would have aged me. maybe it is also like that, I did not make such a beautiful coloring as in those photos, I limited myself to making my hair grow natural, but at least stress since then. I no longer worry about regrowth, my hair is much healthier and less stressed, in summer I no longer have a rope basket on my head instead of hair, when I leave the sea. and if I fancy some color on gray, there are a lot of coloring shampoos that can give me a burst of color without having to go to the hairdresser or do dyes. after a dozen washes it is almost completely gone and I go back to my old natural color.

Load More Replies... It's nice to know fashion gives women options again, when it comes to aging. Perhaps in time, it will be acceptable for women to grow old naturally even on our screens. And the pictures are great, but did we need so many of them ?
The grey's win every time here. The blonde colors especially look drab, lifeless, and washes them out, making them look older. Where as the silvers make them look youthful and vibrant. Long hair and shorter, they're all fabulous.
As someone who adores gray hair on women, this makes me just a little sad. Frankly, I'm not all that crazy about my own gray hair. Nevertheless, it's what I was given so I embrace it. If these women had simply done this to begin with, it would have saved them a lot of time and effort.
All these ladies have long, thick hair. They are all attractive by conventional mores. That being said, the most styles are long and beautiful.
I think most of these photos are misleading. In the before shots, the ladies aren't posed, have little to no make-up and aren't smiling or dressed as nicely. I think color changes aren't as important as styling, healthy hair learning techniques and body confidence. Obviously, they are going to look much prettier when they are sitting posed, smiling, fresh professional make-up applied, and are being filmed professional style with a neutral background and probably photo retouched. IMO, Not a fair comparison.
It looks amazing right after the hairdresser, but it takes a lot of maintenance after that. Grey hair looks good only if it is well groomed.
Would love to see more short hair adjustments; oh and if I looked like ANY of these women, it wouldn't matter what color their hair is. TEN hours for the transformation? it is done long time ago...at least in Spain..where women used to go to a hairsalon every week...then came the high lights fashion... and those women anted to look like the young one's...when i came to live to Australia... they call it the blue rinse! i think is great and clean and stylish..and even if you do it to young girls...they will look stunning! my share as a stylish hairdresser of the past!
These people look good, very beautiful but almost all of them look older with gray hair than if they had just colored the gray part to match their natural color. Most people color their grays so they don’t look prematurely aged
If course the grey looks much better, but grey hair should be either kept short or worn up! These women are much to old for these teenager styles. Mutton dressed as Lamb - springs to mind. And, what potential is there left for "Letting your hair down?"
OK, as a hairdresser that's been at this for 40 years wants to know how this was done! I'm sorry there is no way that hair was bleached or a color removal service got some of those heads of hair back to their natural state without HOURS of torture to the hair. That much effort would also DESTROY the cuticle layer pretty badly. Amazing results but I wanna know that secret!

Probably the best part of the transformation is that he gave them a style that was more adult compared to many of the ones they had before - which mimicked those of twenty-somethings.
Even if there is no Photoshop involved (which I doubt) this isn't their natural hair. They will also need regular salon visits and a very expensive silver shampoo to maintain the lack of yellow. Also, grey hair needs make up so that you look good and not old.
Grey hair does not need more make up than any other hair color "to look good". Only those who put up make up to look good think that. And silver shampoo isn't expensive at all.

Yes, there's some roots, but maybe I'm just cynical enough to think it's bogus. And have you noticed that some of these women have put on makeup after their hair work has been done?
