19 Ruthless Responses To The Person Who Arrogantly Claimed That Owning Guns Is A Constitutional Right

Sometimes an outsider’s perspective can be an incredibly valuable thing – it allows an escape from the vested interests and entrenched biases that color domestic discussions and can give a more accurate, objective picture of reality.

It can sometimes be really difficult to accept, however, particularly when it involves criticism. The outsider often doesn’t know or care about long-standing habits or traditions, intangible things like loyalty, patriotism and religious faith. The outsider sees only the result of these things and tells it as it is.

This perspective – uploaded onto the subreddit r/MurderedByWords as a response to a post about the gun debate – is a brutally honest summation of an outsider’s view of American society.

For an American, it makes difficult reading because many people are raised to believe that they live in the undisputed greatest nation on Earth. The statistics don’t bear this out however and many foreigners, tired of being lectured to about freedom and democracy while being pressured into supporting war after war, are only too happy to set the record straight.

Harsh? Perhaps. Of course, this commenter has their own biases based on the reality of their own country; we all have different needs and expectations about life and governments choose different ways to serve the best interests of their citizens.

But some things are universal – the right to safety and access to affordable medical care for example – and many outsiders look on in horrified amazement at Americans squabbling over petty details whilst innocent people continue to die tragic and preventable deaths.

Perhaps it might be time to swallow some pride and take a little outsider criticism on board?

Just a suggestion.

Here’s what other people had to say about the response

I'm a veteran. Been shooting for fun since I was 10, own a few. However... my "right" to put little holes in pieces of paper, or even in animals I'm not going to eat, is not greater than the right of any child to live. Period.

As an outsider, I have no doubt that the majority, the vast majority of Americans are perfectly nice, pleasant people. The issue seems to be how America, as a nation, acts as a collective. It's like all the goodness within individuals is forgotten and it loses all empathy with its own citizens.

The perception of America in my country is of a country full to the brim of hypocrisy. It shouts the loudest about freedom but really doesn't like anyone questioning authority. But questioning authority, questioning the president etc. should be praised and actively encouraged. It's like America is the self proclaimed cool kid in class, always making people laugh and easy going. Then another kid makes a light hearted comment and America, unable to deal with criticism, loses its cool and beats the kid to death. Then goes back to acting like the Fonze.

The majority,of Americans feel the same way. I don't know what other countries have, but here in America we have lobbiest. Which is basically a group of people representing an industry, tobacco, guns, drugs etc. These lobbies give millions to politicians in order to get political favors, laws, etc. Then lets say a politician passes a law that eases a tax burden on an oil company, or lowers an EPA Restriction on a chemical company. When this politician retires, they miraculously get a high, paying board spot in that said industry. Its f*****g criminal.

We may have our flaws, we are still a very young country, but I love America. She is worth fighting for. And if all the media does is perpetuate the negative what are people supposed to think about America? Seriously. Come to my house I'll show you the real America. It's a pretty cool place, with pretty cool people in it.

The young country doesn't really work as an explanation anymore. There are a lot of younger coyntries who have made it work, mine included. Finland is a bit over 100 years old and, dispite our problems, statisticly the best country in the world.

I just don't understand why those people equate wanting stricter gun laws to hating the constitution. I just don't get that leap of logic- "Oh, they dislike guns,. they must also hate the constitution, the Holy Bible and the baby Jesus". Some substances simply need to be controlled by the state. By their logic drugs like cocaine being illegal is also a breach of their precious "freedom". Drinking/ smoking age as well. Teenagers not being to buy their own alcohol is also a limit on freedom. I just don't get the twisted logic behind it.

They know that wanting stricter gun laws isn't against the Constitution. But they have no real argument to support their love and want of guns so they have to fabricate something to pretend it's "anti-American" to want gun controls. Gun nuts have no honest arguments that actually support them. I wish they'd just be honest and stop hiding behind lies about what the Constitution actually says and they'd just come out and say, "F**k you. I don't care what you say. I want my guns." because that's the truth of the matter. They couldn't care less about the Constitution. It's just like their bible. It's sacred when it says something they like but when it says something they don't like they just pretend it isn't there.

My Swedish thoughts: I've always thought that what Americans seem to think democracy is, is a strange and twisted version of it. Like a beginners version for new nations, a start-up democracy that should've been developed as years passed but somehow it never did. And what Americans seem to think socialism and a socialist nation is, is basicly what communism actually is. There is a difference there, you know......... Also, when Trump called Swedish prime minister and offered to pay bail for Asap Rocky, he missed the fact that Sweden doesn't have a bail system. So Sweden laughed when he went off on us via Twitter, and we are still laughing. I guess Trumps advisors stopped caring, huh?

Most of the problems in the USA come from the greedy ultra-wealthy. They have rigged the systems. They cause extreme corruption in our government. The people that do care about our government are working too many hours to be able to do much to participate in it, or they know the statistics (the US government only works for the ultra-wealthy) and are completely apathetic, or they fall for the propaganda of those getting them to vote against their best interest (looking at you, Red states). Through the government they have destroyed our education system. Having a less educated populace exacerbates most of the problems in the USA. A better educated populace could bring us much more wealth and prosperity (possibly creating great inventions), but the ultra-wealthy can't see that. They want people just smart enough to run their machines. They have rigged the prison systems so they can basically exploit slave labor. They are the ones largely responsible for our out of control pollution.

The constitution was written in the late 1780s and the whole purpose of the 2nd amendment was basically because during that time a lot of people would take of arms and fight wars since there was no draft or real official military. Why we still hold that ideal over 200 years later baffles me. I can understand why for protection you might keep a gun in the house and I get some people hunt and use a gun for hunting, but why do people need AR’s or military grade guns? Just why? Why are people in this country so obsessed with guns? Why when children get killed instead of blaming the accessibility of guns you blame something stupid like video games? Just so many whys while the rest of the world just watched and wonders wtf is the US doing

My mother refuses to go to the emergency room because it costs $550.00 IF they deem it "not as an emergency," (and this is without the ambulance). This was after the Urgency Clinic told her that she legit has to go. Low and behold I persuaded her to go and even though everything in the medical papers deemed it as a neurological problem and she needs further attention, they still put it down as "not an emergency." This isn't even bad though. My father had a truck accident around ten years ago. His coworker didn't see him and drove over his arm. It completely destroyed it, but a surgeon (who I am extremely thankful for saving his life) managed to reconstruct it with a skin graph. It doesn't look like a proper arm and he doesn't have feeling, but he still can move his fingers and do everyday tasks. The BILL though??? If it wasn't for a family friend of ours who persuaded my mom to take this to court, we apparently would have paid for the bills instead of the company my father works at.

Continued: It was several hundreds of thousands of dollars. I don't remember the exact value as I would have to go back through our financial stack of disappointments, but even with the company paying for his surgeries in full, my entire life savings for college went to his rehabilitation and stay at the hospital. I am glad that we had that money for him and not my future. I prefer having him over my education, but that half a minute accident changed my family's entire life. Not because he was affected to the point where he couldn't walk or talk, he is the same man as before and even continued truck driving later on, but because of those damn medical bills. I just finished my degree this past May, so you can add on another set of dollars to our debt. This was never a country of "opportunity." It isn't even a country. It's a "business."

Yes, there are a lot of American self image issues, which result in the delusion that the USA is “the best country in the world”. Look up the term “American exceptionalism”. Also, look up “nationalism”. The USA has a serious problem with these.

The most bizarre thing I learned about America is the 10 day limit on the number of paid sickdays per year. In the Netherlands you can be sick for 104 WEEKS before your employer can begin proceedings to get you fired. If you get fired your income will drop, but you still get money from communal funds. So you won't become homeless.

One of the best things about the United States is that if you do not like living there, you can go live in the country of your choice. Visit other countries, find the one that works for you and move there. Life is too short to be unhappy where you live. The World is out there. Go and find the part of it that makes you happy.

One of the saddest things is that from the perspective of people where I am (Southern Europe), every time there are reports of a mass/school shooting, nobody is shocked anymore. It isn't headline news anymore. People react in a nonchalant way to it, like 'oh, again?' and carry on. The outside world is become desensitised to your kids being murdered almost everyday. We are starting to not care.

The issue is, that due to all of the media surrounded in murder, terrorism, etc. the newer generations are not reacting to it as previous ones had. When I was younger and I heard about a school shooting, I felt a sense of absolute dread and sadness, fear and paranoia. As the years went by, I genuinely sat at my table, drinking my tea, watching another news report about a school shooting, bombing, act of terrorism and felt nothing. That's the problem. Several people were killed on my university grounds while I was a student there, but the following day nearly all the students went back to their classes as if nothing had happened. We've become numb. Until the day I come close to death from one of these events or someone close to me does, I will not feel anything. Because this experience is no longer new, it is a norm. And this is a severity we cannot reverse for ourselves, but for future generations. It needs to end now or it will continue to repeat.

Here’s what I thunk the real solution would be, to start we need training courses, background checks, and overall higher restrictions on guns. But after you pass all the prerequisites, you should be able to shoot whatever you dam well please, full auto, bump stocks, rocket launchers, anything. Anyways enjoy the necro post

You missed another major issue: americans gets mad at women who receive maternity leave, gets paid and keep their jobs. As a European I don't understand how it is expected a woman shall experience the big bodily effort, pain, fresh wounds, stiches etc. and be present at work the NEXT day or just few days after. Also they cringe if a woman is paid and her job secured for providing to her country a future worker and taxpayer. Like having a kid is some luxury, some stupid unimportant accessory which is a burden robbing taxpayers. They can't wrap their heads around the idea that without properly raised kids there would be noone to provide and care for others in the future. They expect ppl who have worked all their lives and paid taxes for all community services to also have collected on their own money to support themselves when old. To receive a pension after serving 45 years enrages them like growing old is some luxury and arrogance too, 45 years of serving are not enough to deserve to finally rest for a couple of years before your death. Meanwhile spending so much on wars, supporting wallstreet, lowering taxes for billionaires and huge corporations is totally ok. But helping a bleeding victim of an accident for free, supporting orphanages, education etc gets neglected. The American dream is a huge scam, their greed, consumerism and viscousness is destroying the environment.

You know, that's a lot of criticism about America. Wasn't much said about the 2nd Amendment, which I find puzzling since supposedly this is an article about that topic. But about the criticism. If America is so bad, why do so many people want to come here? I'm not talking about the few who responded, I'm talking about the more the ones who legally go through our naturalization process (a laborious task), as well as the 20 million who skip that and just enter illegally.

Why do people want to come to my country? For starters, the pro-America propaganda. The myth of “the American dream”. Also: the USA has actually caused major problems in the countries south of it, which is causing the people there to flee north. For example: the USA deported gang members back to southern nations without warning those countries about the gang activity (deportation instead of law enforcement). When gang members got back to their home countries, their influence and resources (via their criminal connections to the USA) allowed them to have a lot more influence in their home countries. The crime got worse there and then people tried to flee north.

I am an American and I am not blind to the problems facing our country. America used to be a great country and could still be, but somewhere along the line something broke and we have been unable to fix it. Instead of being just American we become Republican vs. Democrat and conservative vs. liberal. We scream and cuss a person out if their views differ from ours in the slightest. We have, because of free speech, allowed people to picket funerals and other settings that this type of behavior is inappropriate at. We allow the government to decide what a woman can do with her own body. We allow government officials to refuse to marry people based on the official's religious beliefs. We call teenagers who watched their friends get shot and protest it "crisis actors." We have a president who makes fun of anyone who doesn't agree with him. America can be a great country. It just needs to start all over and start fresh. It needs to decide that freedom of speech doesn't make hateful speech

If the American people would know how the rest of the world thinks about America, their proud would change in shame. There is no nation that f****up the world more than America. Also there is no nation in the world more f**ked up than America. If you would descibe America from a outsiders perspective, than America represent hate, war, lies and no respect for people.

I believe the word many of them were looking for when describing our country is nationalism and/or religious nationalism. Patriotism is not the same as nationalism and there are many of us who can still tell the difference. However, I've been abroad, so maybe that's why. I took the time to study global Christianity and how other countries view our notion that we are "special." I'm so glad I had the opportunity to learn a different point of view.

The 2nd amendment says the american people have the right to bear arms and IT SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. To protect against foreign or domestic threats. I am a law abiding citizen my guns have never killed anyone so if you want to take them from me then you are now a domestic terrorist and you are my enemy. And if you don't like how this country is ran go somewhere else. I can guarantee that if we somehow banned "assault rifles" or even all guns, there would still be gun violence and more mass shootings. We've developed a "blame culture" in the USA where we don't hold people responsible for their actions, we blame other things (like inanimate objects). I think it's more important that we try to find out why people would go on a killing spree than to continue to blame guns.

Another thing Europeans don't realize is that 128 MILLION Americans do not pay ANY federal income taxes. Their health care is paid in full by the rest of us. Their retirement is paid for by the rest of us. Their housing is subsidized by the rest of us. Their education is paid for by the rest of us. And don't forget the public colleges are 100% run by liberals who jack up the tuition and saddle the students with massive debt. So don't blame "America" for it's woes, blame the liberals. They are the root cause of everything wrong with our country.

I’m an American, and I agree with a lot of this. The gun lobby, Christians, White supremacists, conservatives, pharmaceutical companies, Republicans, all have f****d this country RAW. America has so much potential but these institutions ruin it. The last time we had an honest president, he was shot in the head. American people are disgusting trash as a whole, but America as a country is pretty awesome. It’s a lovely concept and it’s nice that everyone is so blended and mixed here in ways that no other country gets to experience. But as long as white Christian republican ghetto trash gets to keep voting, expect things to get worse. America is ruined by the trash that we let live here. We need to start deporting rednecks.

The problem is every single person who falls for anything the left OR right try to make them believe. Divided we fall, and you are obviously one that is helping the division grow.

Sorry, the means of owning weapons (arms) are a constitution right. Period. It's in the documents. It protects the first rule of survival - defense. Not for hunting, or target practicing. It's meant for defense of the individual (you or other) and for the nation. Bad guy tried to break into your home, they are met with deadly force. If our own government decided to round up and kill a bunch of its citizens, they would be met with deadly force. The right to defend oneself outweighs the emotional and irrational reaction of mass shootings and impulse to ban weapons that one would use in defense.

I stopped reading halfway through because I have to say a few things. We, the people, didn't vote Trump in..the Electoral College did. That Electoral College is made up of a bunch of fat cats that will vote for whomever they think will make them money. It's why it needs to be removed from the election process. Second, those guns aren't meant for us to just protect ourselves from each other. The Constitution reads "to protect ourselves from all enemies, foreign or domestic." That means arming ourselves to protect ourselves from our own government should they spiral themselves out of control. The first thing Hitler did when he took control was outlaw guns. The people were left powerless to fight back when the Nazis took control. That scenario should never be repeated.

You’re living under some misunderstandings. Hitler limited weapons for the people he was oppressing, and widened ownership for the rest. Also, if you were paying attention to our military, you’d know that no matter what firearms you acquire, you will never ever form a militia that will exceed the military’s ability to crush you like a bug. This “protect us against our own government” line is yet another myth promoted by the NRA.

The constitution is from the 1700's Lucille. Do you know how many things were legal in the 1700s that you would absolutely cringe over in 2019???? Did you know that in the 18th century, it was a mans legal right to beat his wife if he felt the need to? Did you also know that you could buy Meth and heroin at the local drug store legally? Did you know that men were legally allowed to rape their women in these centuries? Would you be ok with these things happening today Lucille? Do you think that these should also still be allowed to day because it was once our legal right??? Things change for a reason Lucille. Why? Because THIS S**T IS ABSURD. The fact that ya'll still believe in this b******t constitutional right, which again, was applied in 1787 (when we were duelin at high noon, and drinkin moonshine in saloons with swingin' doors, and robbin trains on horses) just goes to show how UTTERLY BIZZARE and stupid your backwards a*s country really is.

It's a s**t show and everyone is so sensitive over everything that nobody has guts to say anything to the contrary of what the leaders are doing to this place!... Believe me when I say I used to love my country but now if it was on fire n I had the water I'd drink it instead! -

People kill people thanks to guns, those people wouldn’t have been able to do anything without to gun so it’s the guns fault that the person killed people. We know that the gun didn’t just come to life and start shooting people.

My god.

This is complete and totally nonsense, but a single individual made a reasonable argument that guns are not a constitutional right. The left is just emotional on this issue as per usual. No deep thoughts whatsoever.
