Groom Rejects Bride’s ‘Weird Family Tradition’ Of Spending The Night With Her Mom, Drama Ensues

There’s a saying, ‘When you marry someone, you also marry their family.’ And their wedding traditions — no matter how utterly bizarre they are.

Although the Reddit user by the name of ‘throwratonypan‘ didn’t have to chase and butcher a chicken in order to prove his love in front of fiancée’s family, like they do in Mongolia; his soon-to-be wife expected him to wine and dine with his future mother-in-law as part of their unusual family tradition. And if that sounds a tad sinister, well, you’re not the only one.

Info: Reddit

Love is universal, yes — but marriage traditions are not

Image credits: @invadingkingdom (not the actual photo)

And some of them are more downright bizarre than the others

Even MIL was okay with the groom not being the biggest fan of their family tradition

But the bride was still bitter about his choice

This is what people had to say about this uncomfortable situation

Definitely, these Reddit AITA posts picked for BP articles are just too much to be true. Also the consistent way these are written makes me suspect it's always the same person inventing the stories.

In my family it is tradition for the soon-to-be groom to take the parents of the bride-to-be for an outing of some kind without the bride. It is usually out to dinner or he invites them over and cooks for them (my cousin's husband invited her parents over and cooked dinner and they hung out for a few hours.) This is a "get-to-know-you-on-your-own" thing and nothing that would include purchasing clothes or a hotel room. I mean, I just don't believe this happened.

Where are the girlfriend's family from? I know someone who tried to sell a "tradition" that a son's girlfriend must first sleep with his father and that a daughter must sleep with her father before being allowed to have a boyfriend. This sounds like a similar creepy "tradition".

Ridiculous! No is no - plain and simple. Not being allowed to make a personal choice over something that is obviously an uncomfortable situation should be the biggest red flag as to what the marriage will be like. I’d say no, leave and lose whatever deposits I had already made to stick up for myself here. Crazy. Bat s**t crazy.

Not a problem. Take her out to dinner, buy the clothes. Get 2 rooms. HAVE the dad waiting in the room the FMIL will be in. Put flowers in the room and make it a truly romantic date for themselves. THIS "Tradition" sounds very close to incest and would not be surprised if in that family the girls dad test drove his daughters and future daughters in law. Tread carefully in that family or you might end up with molested children. With the blessing of your weird ass wife.

This is horrifying. If it's real, it's definitely the result of a horny mother-in-law at some point in the family's history. It could also be a gender-swap story to see how people react (dad and son's fiancée is an obvious issue, so it's interesting to see the response to the opposite)

Everyone saying "this can't be cultural".. the himba tribe has a tradition that the wife (one of potentially many) is offered for sexual favors to any guests who stay the night at their house. The further back in time, the creepier traditions get in general(don't forget the child sacrifices, genital mutilation, etc)And I'm sure quite a few people have never heard of or refuse to believe in their existence too.. anything is possible. Just take the mom to play mini golf, buy her a hideous patchwork jean dress with some flannel pajamas, put her up in a hotel room then drive yourself home lol tell her to call when she's ready for a ride home and you'll order a cab - mission complete. They specifically said sex is not expected so what's the big deal?? It's not like she said "my mom is required to measure your d*** with her mouth" or something 😅

I think your bride to be ( if the wedding still is on if you refuse the hotel night) should be quite happy you don't want to be a mother in law f****r !! Having dinner with a mother in law might be a good way to ger to know each other but hell no to anything more .

I dont know where these folks come from, but I come from serbia, and in Serbia many gypsies practice this. Now dont forget folks, these are folks who live in cardboard houses usually next to dumpster hills and are illiterate. I'm not trying the insult them, but they are a special kind of people, and if you wanna call this cultural then that's what it is.but it is a tradition. They also have children as soon as their hormones start their productive system and I not only believe this story but can confirm I have seen this in my life...Makes me really wonder where this girl if from and why she thinks this is normal..and how with these kind of beliefs is she marriage material... just a tad bit strange...to say the least

If they state from the very beginning that is not a sexual thing and you simply can not stop giving to it a sexual meaning, or can not believe is not a sexual thing, you may be sick of your mind and have some kind of sexual disorder They seem to be a family people and want to get sure that groom is it as well. They just want to see if the groom can do something for his future mother in law that hi would be able to do for his own mother. In that way de bride can feel that he cares about her mother enough to be happy with him because her family is very important to her and she needs to see that he really understand how much Some people would say that men can not stop thinking about sex every 5 seconds and it is normal to feel uncomfortable with the idea to spend a whole night with a woman that is not your girlfriend or wife. Let me ask you this, so you can not sleep in the same bed with your own mother without thinking about sex?

leonardoangel avatar

It is OK to think about sex but choose in relation with what or whom you are thinking that. If you go out with your mother in law for dinner and you feel aroused by the waitress that took your order because she has nice breast or a guest at the hotel has a hot body, is OK to think about sex in relation to those people but don't do it with your mother in law, because you suppose to be like a soon for her. If you can not do it, you are a sick man who have a sexual disorder

This is the problem with man’s traditions! Making up things as they go. This is completely why we have God‘s word the Bible to direct us in the right path without it man cannot direct their own step. Everything points back to the guidance that we have in the Bible, without his word in every day life we see what the world looks like. Pretty messed up to say the least!

After that type of revelation I would have said "nice knowing you but if you and your family want to sleep with each other's partners this is the wrong relationship for you and I because I won't be a part of it". If he decides to give in and do that who knows what that family of nuts will try to force you into doing ? Should have cut his losses years ago. Even though this is probably a fictitious story it serves as a cautionary tale: Don't be a muthrfkr. Literally. The plan is not only to do this reverse "prima nocta", but end up being the new butt of family jokes, or worst, used for leverage, for the rest of your marriage.

This is actually a thing guys. Y'all should do some research before making assumptions, that it's made up. Just shows how ignorant you are. Sheesh. Also, it's your boundaries and if you're not comfortable with something she has to respect it. You have to decide whether you want to continue the relationship because it seems, that she's not going to stop the traditions for you. And she doesn't have to, that's her culture which you also have to respect.

Even if this is some old obscure tradition that started before it would be considered completely inappropriate today, they've somehow adapted it to shopping for dresses/pajamas and getting hotel rooms??? Did they do those things years ago? How recent is this tradition? Sounds fishy to me.

Even if you were comfortable just taking her out to dinner and stopping there are you comfortable with the thought of your soon to be wife doing this with your future son in law(s). I mean, some people are swingers and they're okay with having other partners, but if you're not one of them, then you don't need to marry her. Plus the emotional damage if your daughter doesn't believe it's normal only to find out that her own mother slept with her husband because he wanted to. 😱 No thanks. That's too much trauma to unpack.

While it's a strange tradition, it could be worse. It sounds like the boyfriend could also have the option of separate rooms at the hotel if some of this is up to him. So, what's the harm? He buys his future MIL a beautiful dress, takes her out to a nice dinner, then treats her to a night in a nice hotel room. I think some of it depends on the type of people they are and what kind of relationship they have.
