Grim Reapers Join Protesting “Karens” Who Want To Send Their Kids Back To School

While the debate about sending kids back to school is still raging, the federal government has given schools guidelines for reopening as scheduled this fall. With back-to-school day closer than ever, many parents and teachers have openly expressed their skepticism. Read about more about what people have to say on the matter in our previous posts here and here.

But some parents are more than eager to send their kids back to school amid the pandemic. Moms who were not happy with Houston ISD’s decision to switch to online classes for fall gathered for a Red Apple protest to make their voices heard. And they were not the only ones.

Right next to them, two pitch-dark grim reapers were holding their signs asking to “Open Schools Now!” in a satirical move that meant exactly the opposite. The all-telling picture was shared by Twitter user Atro Spell with the caption “Grim Reapers protesting with Karens to open schools in Houston.” It quickly blew up on social media with 72K retweets and comments as well as 270.5K likes, with many praising the reapers not only for wearing black cloaks in Houston in summer, but also that.

Houston ISD has decided that students will return to school in the fall, but virtually. Lydia Zatopek of Harris County Department of Education commented on its decision to ABC News: “Let’s try this out. Hopefully, this isn’t going to last very long. If things improve, there will be some opportunities for back to face-to-face learning. We’ll see how it goes.”

However, a group of parents from West University Elementary School were far from happy with the decision. One of them, mom Christine Flood said: “Children thrive from social interaction, learning from their peers, competing with their peers, comparing themselves to their peers, putting on clothes and presenting themselves, and learning manners each day inside the classroom.”

While parents claim to understand the threat of Covid-19, they feel like there shouldn’t be a “one size fits all” approach applied to their children. As a result, they are said to be gathering for Red Apple protests every Monday at West University Elementary School at 8 a.m. “until their request is taken seriously or HISD reverses its decision,” reports ABC News.

Kids are germ FACTORIES. pediatricians are saying if kids go back it's a matter of time before every one of them get it. And there's a lie circulating...kids do and are dying from this...faster then previously thought. I've a 14 year old highschooler this year. Idk what I'm gonna do. They're going to social distance and my state is on the down trend but I'm afraid this will sling shot it.

These are the same moms who ship their kids to camp as soon as school is over. The same ones who give kids microwaved, ready food. The same ones who blame the teacher for anything that goes wrong. The same ones who send their kids to school with a fever. Also, the same ones who go to bars to have alone mommy time. These are trying times for everyone. No one expects you to give your child the same education as the teacher. Teachers are doing their best giving you plans on what to do from day to day. It’s really not that bad. Using the, “my child needs to be in school to learn” is complete BS because you know you just want them out of your hair.

I couldn't agree more, Lola. I have more respect for someone who at least says they need the childcare because they're going to lose their home if they don't go to work. The reason kids are getting it more right now, is that they've more or less been quarantined. And you know what, if these kids don't go back to school for a while, the world, their world, will not end. They will all eventually catch up. So what if they graduate at 19 instead of 18? At least they'll be alive.

I'm concerned for the children that might not have a stable internet connection/access. We need to be sure that these kids don't fall behind. That's the only thing about keeping schools closed that worries me. Granted I get the feeling most kids will be behind this year, but better that than covid spreading worse than it has already. There's no way schools can be kept clean enough to be safe.

So, if we kept them home, even for another year, what's the worst that would happen? They'd be a year older when they graduate high school? They'll all be behind together, and they'll all catch up together. If you have kids, you probably remember how much they hugged each other when they started kindergarten. Masks, 6 ft. apart? I don't see 5 year olds doing that.

This is a hard situation. If they go to school they have to risk getting infected or infecting their teachers and if they stay home parents who work have to scramble find a babysitter and to be a teacher in the meantime.

While it may not have been that difficult for you (and let’s be honest, it probably wouldn’t be for these moms either), there are many parents for whom it would be incredibly difficult or downright impossible. If you were a single parent having to work two jobs to survive you may not have been able to homeschool on top of that. I’m not saying to reopen schools, but we can acknowledge both the need to keep them closed and the consequences of doing so.

The same people who are demanding that we open schools are the same ones that refuse to fund our schools properly. The other thing that bothers me (besides the fact that kids are going to spread this outside of schools) is that kids can get extremely ill and die several weeks after having COVID-19. It's rare, but as a parent, it's not a risk I would be willing to take.

I'm not necessarily in favour of sending kids back to school, but I have a 4 year old due to start in September, I'm terrified but at the same time she's desperate to go to school to learn and make new friends, the kids need social interaction especially the younger ones. That said I'm very worried about sending her at all due to covid, both her grandmother's are ex primary school teachers and I'm worried for all of us. They're easing restrictions but we still haven't seen them for fear of passing on something we don't know if we even have or not. Genuinely don't know what to do.

Kids put their hands EVERYWHERE on their BODIES!!! and we think teachers are going to be able to stop this. If your kid watches TV with his hands in is pants...he does this at school too (yes I'm a teacher). There is no way this story, of kids going back to school, ends well. We are not the nation's lab experiment. Even if kids do not usually die from this, the life long heath problems, somewhat unknown, could be devastating for decades to come. Want your kid to be an athlete...good luck with diminished lung capacity and on and on. The grim reapers here are really the ones on the school's side in this story.

I am for masks, stronger lock downs, etc HOWEVER as some of these kids will end up in some sort of daycare so their parents can go to their jobs, many underprivileged children have lost vital services, and the majority of children are being emotionally impacted by isolation this is not a black and white issue.

We're all having some emotional issues. There's a goddamn pandemic. We'll all just have to ride it out. But you can't do that if you're DEAD.

Schools for kids 4-12 years in the Netherlands has been open since May which did not result in more Covid patients. They had very strict rules for reopening, no parents in school, playtime outside in small groups, teachers were tested, kids had to stay home when they had a cold or when someone in their household had a fever. No seniors were allowed to get their grandchildren. Older kids from 12-18 years oĺd were allowed to go to school from the end of June also with strict rules. We have summerbreak now. At the moment we have a slight increase in Covidpatients due to travelling and studentparties but the kids do fine here.

Meanwhile here in The Netherlands our government sent out a message that if kids are quarantining because they visited a country that became high risk it will be considered a luxury leave and avoiding attendance will be fined. Did you know there are countries with attendance duty? Well now you know. Please don't think it's just the US making crappy decisions. Dutchies need to send their kids to school or they will be fined pretty severely.

And the best part is, this only happens if the schools notify the authorities. So we will be expecting the crazy situation where parents are being fined because they didn't send their kids to a classroom without a teacher that is taking sick leave because they are in quarantine. It's what happens if you don't apply rules but strictly follow them without understanding what you're trying to do.

I just don't understand what everyone is doing with their kids right now then? Both my children are in daycare right now because my husband and I have to WORK to make MONEY to SURVIVE. And if most kids are in daycare now then what is the difference if they go back to school? I'm so confused on how everyone has the ability to have keep their kids home with them all summer! I would have loved to but that is not reality for many Americans.

What's your plan for when the kids bring COVID home and you and/or your husband get it? Who's going to WORK to make MONEY to SURVIVE if you're both laid up? That's the logical consequence that everyone is ignoring. My partner and I have both shifted to a part time schedule where we trade off working and minding the kid, because our ability to WORK to make MONEY to SURVIVE depends on our remaining healthy. Yeah, we make less money this way, but I'd rather have less money than COVID.

I am starting to think not reopening schools can be a potentially bigger problem enrollments for private schools that can open has skyrocketed while public schools probably wont open obviously private education is only accessible to people with higher income the public school online programs are trash i know because i did them last year with my daughter there is no end in sight to this pandemic and its starting to look like good education is going to elitist on a elementary level not just on a college one like it is now everyone try to imagine this country years down the road where the difference in education starting at grade school level is so completely off kilter with each other between lower and higher income households i am not advocating for a hard stupid push into opening schools this pandemic needs to be taken seriously but opening schools also needs to be taken seriously not only to prevent a widened education gap between the rich and poor but alot of people forget the free childcare for working people in this country is absolutely crucial

That is absolutely not true. Last year about 62,000 died from the regular flu (this is an estimate from the CDC site) as of today, July 30 - 148,000 have already died from corona virus, and the year isn't over. If you extrapolate the same number of people dying in the latter half of the year, that's at least another 105,000 people dying. That total would be 253,000. Comparing that with the previous year flu deaths it is 25% higher. So, now, do more people die from the regular flu? I think not.

Children's immunological responses are different than adults in many ailments (measles, chickenpox, etc.), not only Covid-19. This doesn't mean *immunity*, but different expression of symptoms, different mortality rates, etc., than in *adults*. While they are (as far as we know) at lower risk of *mortality* right now from COvid-19... *morbidity* (complications) are unknown, and they CAN and WILL spread COvid-19, as they have spread every other darned germ. Infected child may be fine, but will his parent with Type2Diabetes? Or her grandma with a history of heart attack? ... Or a cousin who is immune-compromised?... And imagine trying to trace the contacts of the average 10-year-old in a school. Every classmate and every hallway and every restroom and... Yikes.

Republican politicians are the first to cut social services. It's major part of being a republican, smaller government, fewer agencies, regulations and social services. Also the president has made not effort to give the schools the funding they need to open safely or provide these services.

As I've said before. I have more respect for the people that simply say, I've got to work. And I agree, that is a really hard situation. But when people throw all these other arguments out there that really have little to do with the kids welfare, it's just disingenuous.

Yikes.
