These past times have been quite challenging for the whole world battling the pandemic and facing the intensified situation with climate change. Over time, people have heard a lot of scary threats regarding the planet. And it seems that these apocalyptic scenarios are coming to realization. One recent piece news that has drawn the attention of the whole world is that of wildfires taking place in Greece.
The fire started on August 3rd in Evia, the second largest Greek island. The fire was caused by the worst heatwave that Greece has experienced in three decades. It caused hundreds of people to evacuate as soon as possible, leaving their homes and everything precious to them in order to save their lives.

Even though these severe heatwaves are not a very common occurrence, recently different parts of the world have been affected by them. However, the intensity of these heat waves reached its peak in Greece and soon national authorities had to find an effective way to tackle the situation. These unprecedented circumstances not only filled people with fear of the unknown, but also sparked some distrust towards the government.

According to the Guardian, the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis named this situation “a natural disaster of unprecedented dimensions.” However, the government received some critique for failing to make sure that there are enough resources to tackle the problem.

The wildfires that have caused thousands of people to lose their homes, jobs, and businesses have also put people into dangerous and stressful situations. Besides that, it has a huge impact on the environment. According to NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory, it releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide, black carbon, brown carbon, and ozone precursors into the atmosphere and has an impact on the quality of air.

Such tough times show how united can people be and how many of them are ready to give a helping hand. Even in these stressful and dangerous times, humanity has proven that there is always some way out. A comment in the post says "Australia, Greece, where next?"... don't forget the west cost of the US and Canada is burning out of control as well right now. -- California: as of August 10, a total of 6,272 fires have been recorded, burning 917,016 acres. In Canada, entire towns have burnt to the ground in British Columbia, destroying everything.
The fires in Siberia are currently larger than anywhere else in the world; Russians are currently fighting 190 fires simultaneously. Italy is also on fire, and of course, Canada and the U.S. seem to have a permanent "fire season," a phenomenon that has developed during the last decade. I've lived on America's West Coast for 30 years and it did NOT used to be like this!

I'm fearing that the world has tipped and we can't come back. Fires, pollution, Antarctica is starting to melt, a huge area of the McKenzie Ice Shelf has split off completely. So many more areas of drought that didnt used to be. Even the Gulf Stream is beginning to change because of fresh water/salt water ratio. I fear we can't make the changes necessary to stop this in time.
Sadly I too believe we passed the point where change was possible. I feel for the innocents (humans and non-humans) that were born in this time.

I am absolutely livid. This is not unprecedented. It has happened time and again so we know there will be little re-forestastion, compensation to victims too little too late and NOTHING will change. Until the next wildfire which will be "unprecedented". To quote government ministers from a few months ago "why hire firefighters? They only work a couple of months a year and then they sit around." And there was also "if we hire more doctors, after the coronovirus we won't know what to do with them." So more than 5000 police officers were hired... Priorities. I mourn for the trees and the wildlife.
My heart goes out to all of you over there, this is bringing back the same sad feelings I had looking at the Australia pics from a couple of years ago, just heart-breaking. Best of luck to all involved, from all of Britain.
It seems like something that's never gonna affect me, like it's just something that happens somewhere up north, somewhere wetter, somewhere prone to these kind of things.But that's exactly what we're getting wrong about climate change. It's global.Soon we'll have places that'll be totally uninhabitable, which will result in mass migration and a bulk of issues we're completely unprepared for. I just don't get how the older generations could get this soo wrong. They taught us about this stuff in school,they should have been doing something!
I feel so bad, people in Greece are fighting wildfires while other people are just sitting at home... We need to do something and stop the global warming.
Heartbreaking. I live in Sonoma County CA… fires on a regular basis now… went to Big Island Hawai’i two weekends ago and had to evacuate the largest blaze in Hawai’i history. Wildfires are no joke and are absolutely terrifying. I really feel for these people.
Absolutely terrifying is exactly right! My heart goes out to these fellow humans as well. We live in portland, OR. In 2020, we had one of the most destructive wildfires in the state. Portland was in danger and that's extremely rare. Air quality here is usually a very low AQI (we're currently at a 6). During the wildfires last year there was one day where we had an AQI of 423. I have an app that shows little cartoon faces for different levels of AQI. Low AQI like a 6 is some happy dude smiling and the 423 is a guy with a heavy duty gas mask on. :(

I think God has finally had enough of this world! Men are women, women are men, ALL of our elected officials are corrupt, laws mean nothing, the world is in constant turmoil, global warming, 800 billion tons of trash dumped in the ocean every year, that in and of itself is mind boggling! We are the greatest nation in the world yet we destroy this planet at breakneck speed, people are vain and we have kicked God out of everything.
Greece turned down the help of firefighters from Slovenia because they were helping North Macedonia as well. So the rest of the firefighters that were ''not needed'' in Greece, went to North Macedonia and they saved four villages from wildfires.
earth burning, literally. the global warming can't be reversed. sadly i've been saying this for years. no way humanity will unite in time to avoid the mess. personnally, even it may sound trolling, i think we're simply heading toward a weather apocalyse, with massive consequences

Having lived in California nearly all of my life I can relate. I would like to mention that we don’t give our first responders enough credit, not only for the tough decisions they must make in each fire but also the horrors they deal with on a daily basis. They are all community service people and daily hero’s. I include fire fighters, police officers, paramedics, emergency room staff and hospital staff. No doubt many of us have experienced problems with one or more people in the profession of first responder, but I guarantee you most of them really care about the people in their communities and work to lessen harm not cause it.
There is a forest fire in Kenora, ON, Canada that is over 200,000 hectares. They are all devastating.
So in California, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Austrália etc the cause is "heath waves" and "natural" but I Brazil theres someone with a flamethrower in the middle of the forest? Ok, of course Its nothing geopolitical
