A Scammer Thought He Was Scamming A 83-Year-Old Grandma But Ended Up Getting The Lesson Of A Lifetime

Deeveeaar is a Youtube channel of dedicated scambaiters, focused mainly on exposing Indian scammers and call centers, and they take their job of scamming scammers very seriously. They aim to “prank scammers, bait them, make them hate their job and demoralize illegitimate call centers,” making the internet a safer place for us all.

The page is run by a guy in his late 20’s known as DVR, who, inspired by other scam baiters and frustrated with the lack of action taken against online scams, decided to take action himself. “I started off with some pranks and scambaits, but quickly I started seeing weaknesses in scammer scripts,” DVR told Bored Panda. “I got a lot of unfortunate stories from phone scam victims, which made me really determined to do more. I got together a team of very skilled people, and we decided to fight back in more ways than just wasting their time. We started to call flooding and accessing their computers so we could uncover more evidence, getting their personal information so we could report them, and figure out more of what they do.”

Lack of cyber-policing to bring internet scams to justice is what makes DVR and his team realize that they really are needed. “We send all the information we obtain from the scammer’s computers to many authorities, locally as well as internationally,” he explained. “We do know that most of the time, it doesn’t do much. But it’s the right thing to do.”

“Because we know there likely won’t be action taken, we do take justice in our own hands a little. We mess with their PCs, maybe send a computer virus, and place their photos online, and we want to make scammers feel afraid. I want to make them feel vulnerable, and send a cautionary tale that “you can scam, but you can’t hide.”

The latest scam bait was a masterpiece of patience and clever acting. Posing as a sweet and naïve grandma, the scambaiter set the trap before delivering the fatal blow at the end. “The grandma voice is actually my girlfriend!” DVR told us with a chuckle. “The funny thing is, I was sitting next to her while a team member on the other side of the world controlled the computer. We told her what to say through sign language, and text instructions in a chat application. Scammers prey on the elderly, so she is the perfect bait to get them to lower their guard.” (Cover image: KimSanDiego)

I would like to learn the tricks 'grandma' used so when they call my elderly mom and try to scam her, as they have done in the past, I can ruin THEIR computer!

I always bait them for a while, and when they ask me my name I say it's Mrs. Benchod. Then they get really nasty and crude. They never get sexual when talking to my husband, but they love to tell me that they're going to rape my mother and sister all the time. I say "It's harder to do with a tiny pee-pee" or "I thought you were gay". They get soooo mad. It's become therapy for me. They are the scum of the Earth.

That's a horrible thing for them to say. Ugh. I like your comeback. You could also tell them your sister has an penicillin resistant venereal disease.

I got the Canadian Gov Tax scam call on my cell yesterday. The robotic voice said that if I didn't return their call they were going to "Get you arrested" Using broken English, you know it's coming from someone other than the Government that's for sure. You'll get me arrested huh? Good try. Nice to see some of them paying for this. My mother in law fell for the same call I had and gave them her personal info! Ugh.

I got that voice mail on my cell a few weeks ago, as a former CRA employee it made me laugh so much. The message said they were going to arrest me, and that if I didn't return the call all he could say was good luck etc etc... But I feel bad for your MIL :(.

From time to time I get a call from a faux Microsoft Office "technical support" hub. I like to d**k them around. As long as I have their attention, they can't rip off others.

I had a scammer call me, and tell me his spiel. Told him I don’t have a Computer. He got very upset as we went back and forth with him telling me, I did have one! I never admitted I had one! He finally started calling me names that were not pretty, but made me laugh out loud, and he hung up and called back twice to tell me his firm listed a desk top unit at my address... so I said to him, that thing? It’s my husbands and I don’t touch it, never have, or he would kill me! He he he! So, he finally gave up, and hung up after calling me a mean b****y woman that took food out of his children’s mouths!

It is soooo sad. People in India, impoverished, work to learn English. Some are hired as technical support, some are hired to sell, and some are hired to scam. It is ironic, because many Indians believe in kharma, and evil activity like scamming will send you back to being a snail. Well, whether they are caught in this or another lifetime...so be it.

A lot of people wouldn't get scammed if they took the time to learn a just few things. But sadly there are also a lot of really dumb people who just ask to get scammed. Everyone knows about the Microsoft Helpdesk Scam, yet it's still one of the most succesful scams around. Everyone ought to know by now that you never open an email attachment from an unknown sender, but people still do. Who would fall for the Nigerian millionaire needing your bankaccount to smuggle his money out of the country? Literally thousands, every day. As long as people stay uninformed and greedy, scamming them is easy and profitable.

Never blame the victims, even if they are really behaving stupid! While I agree that this is careless, the care is only neccesary because so many people without any empathy exist. I would prefer to leave my door open and my bike unlocked if I was sure there was no criminality! And many of these scams, online and ofline, target people close to or even alread suffering from dementia. This is despicable.
