Wildlife documentaries are intense, probably because you know anything can happen. And this one will definitely have your blood rushing as well. Recently, BBC Earth has shared a clip from their documentary series, Dynasties, and it shows a lion named Red, finding himself surrounded by a pack of over twenty blood-thirsty hyenas. As Red tries to growl and fend off the hungry pack, the hyenas cackle, paw and bite at him in an attempt to wear him down. Scroll down to check out how the intense battle ended.

“As they mature, young males begin to explore the boundaries of the pride’s territory.” – the narrator explains
“Red has ventured out alone. And blundered straight into the middle of the hyena town.”
“He’s trapped. By over 20 of them.”
“The pack tries to wear him down. this number of hyenas could kill him.”
“It’s impossible to fight them all at once. He can’t keep them at bay for much longer. He is tiring fast.”

People couldn’t believe how intense the footage was
Also, the way he fell down, so exhausted...awwww
Load More Replies...I noticed that behavior at the end is extremely similar to what my at does with me. It's cool to see the connections between my little cat and it's wild "cousins"
Cats have their scent glands in their necks... When they rub against things in your home (and on you), it's to 'mark' it with their scent. They also 'head bonk' for affection, it's their version of showing love. Sometimes it's a straight head butt, sometimes they lead with their nose... but it's behaviour common house cats picked up from their wild distant cousins :)
Load More Replies...Wow! I hated seeing such a strong animal being surrounded by those minions. You could see the eventual fear and then exhaustion in his face. And the end -wow. Amazing footage and something I would never have thought to witness.
I could never be a videographer or photographer—I’d attempt to intervene every time... I’m glad that he was rescued by his family
I was just thinking the same. I would want to chase those damn hyenas away. God I really hate their horrid laughter. But then I would have to face the lion I'm afraid...
Load More Replies...That's actually his cousin, not his brother. It says in the documentary. They have formed an alliance :)
I was so relieved at the end. I mean I knew it was going to end well for the lion but still, that was intense. The hyenas remind me of the ones from The Lion King, especially their sound. The cuddling at the end, on the other hand, reminds me of my and other cat's behavior from the neighbourhood when I'm petting them and they cuddle with me.
I had to steel myself to watch this - even though knowing the lion escaped. Doccumentary makers SHOULD intevene where possible to get attention for a sick or injured animal. Glad this one escaped. There is no excuse for watching endangered animals die in the name of entertainment without at least making basic efforts to get it help, when help is appropriate. So nice that they helped the penguins
Load More Replies...While those two lions are very cute together, I wonder... where does the blood come from that we see on "Red" in the beginning of the video? It's said that he just "blundered into" the hyena territory, but did he just do that? If so, why didn't he just run away? Did he kill a buck and tried to defend his food? or did he do what lions often do: steal the food of the hyenas? I like lions, but I like hyenas, too! They aren't just dumb garbage-eaters, they are hunters and they have an incredible complex pack-life! That's why I'm sad when I see and read about "dumb hyenas" or "should have ripped them apart". They don't deserve their bad rep just because they don't look majestic or pretty! I'm still glad those lions didn't die, but I would have liked to get the full story of that meeting between lion and hyenas
Thank you. I get really annoyed reading all that awful stuff about hyenas here. They are in fact lovely and super social animals. Maybe everyone writing such bad things here should watch a documentary about hyenas first. Not every kind of hyenas are hunters for example. Most of them are nocturnal animals. So please inform yourself before posting such nonsense. There are no evil animals, just evil people.
Load More Replies...Well, Scar should have watched this then maybe he'd have realised KILLING MUFASA WAS A BAD IDEA!
All these gazelles and other animals watching in the far background like the disaster tourists they are.
I really need to make an audio CD of David Attenborough. I have been in love with his voice since Life on Earth. I could listen to him describe the workings of a washing machine and still be enthralled. Truly one of our greatest national treasures. Just ask the Queen. I will be heartbroken when he is no longer with us.
Man that gave me horrid anxiety watching him get bitten over and over, bastard hyenas! So sweet the cuddling/playing with his brother after he saved him <3
Back in the 90s I recorded on my VCR a National Geographic documentary that is one of the (if not, THE) greatest lions vs. hyenas films of all time. It shows how these two species will go out of their way just to f*ck with each other: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdHtAZifPXw The star is a young male lion called Ntwadumela - "he who greets with fire" who seems to spend his nights just looking for some hyena a*s to kick.
I literally just showed that amazing film to my daughter the other day, and also said almost exactly what you just said!! An incredible documentary of the lion and hyena relationship. VERY COOL.
Load More Replies...Hyenas are one of my favorite animals, but yeah, it can get ugly when they gang up on something. I would have felt bad for Red if they killed him, but only because we were allowed to see it, if that makes sense. Things like this happen in nature all the time, this wasn't an exceptional situation.
Note to self: Not a good idea to visit hyena town when everyone's there
Awww look at them head butting. He's like....I got you bro....and the other one is like....dude you saved my a*s....literally.
That diabolical giggling! Loved the snuggles at the end "Got your six, bro."
I once read that if it weren't for the Hyenas' weak hind legs THEY would be king of the jungle, not lions. I like how Red showed his appreciation at the end.
I'm pretty sure David says, "he blundered straight into a hyena CLAN," not "town." Sorry. That was bothering me.
That was painful ... poor little lion. But I guess, nature does its thing no matter what.
This is the Lion King prequel we were all waiting for... the Musafa and Scar origin stories
I prefer cats too, but hyenas aren't related to dogs , they actually have a closer ancestry to cats. They are vicious though, and extremely smart

Load More Replies...Wow! First, I love anything David Attenborough makes. But this was intense. We go on in our civilized lives, never or almost never, seeing the actual brutality and beauty the cycle of life is. For humans and the animal kingdom.
unfortunate that the hyenas didn't get their big cat meal. I hate felines.
F**k! I started crying and have a lump in my throat. It's like Lion King all over again! F**k hyenas! Little pussies! Red should have walked away earlier. That brotherly love in the end! So beautiful!
The hyenas were probably protecting their turf or trying to eliminate competition. So it's probably wrong of me but I just can't keep from hating the miserable bastards. Sorry hyena fans.
I don't think any of us relish that at all, I skip scenes where lionesses try to take down elephants and giraffes. Any group of anything attacking one of something else is always incredibly difficult to watch, for me at least
