My name is Jakub Polomski. I am a professional landscape and wedding photographer. For the last 20 years, I have used a DSLR camera to photograph. This year I had a chance to test a smartphone as my photography tool. Of course, there are still some features that a smartphone camera lacks in comparison to a DSLR or mirrorless camera. However, the most important advantage of using a smartphone is that you always have it with you just in your pocket.

As for landscape, cityscape, and some portraits I think the smartphone will be my first choice now. Here are the results of my first mobile photography photoshoot captured with my Vivo X60 Pro smartphone. Pictures were taken in my hometown Cieszyn, Poland.

I am a landscape photographer from Poland. I began my photography journey almost 20 years ago, primarily focusing on mountain and travel photography. In recent years, I have also ventured into wedding photography, honing my skills in capturing the moments and emotions of people. After years of using DSLR cameras, I was inspired to explore smartphone photography due to the advancements in technology and the convenience of having a portable device. I wanted to challenge myself and see how capable smartphone cameras have become in capturing high-quality images in real-life situations.

Here are some notable advantages of smartphone cameras compared to DSLR or mirrorless cameras. First of all, it is compact and pocket-friendly: Smartphones are compact and can easily fit in your pocket (a large pocket, of course!). The next thing is accessibility in tight spaces: Their smaller size allows you to reach places where a DSLR camera wouldn't fit, enabling unique and creative perspectives. Another advantage over the traditional camera is that no lens swapping is required: Unlike DSLR cameras, smartphones have fixed lenses, eliminating the need to carry multiple lenses and making them more convenient for spontaneous photography.

Moreover, smartphones are weather resistant: Many of them are built with water resistance, making them less susceptible to weather conditions. A simple wipe of a finger can remove raindrops from the lens, avoiding the need for cleaning large lenses. Instant preview on a large screen is a great pro as well: Smartphones have large screens that allow you to immediately see the results of your photography, aiding in composition and adjustments.

He looks happy! Not enthused… but happy. Look at that sideways smile!

Now, let's move on to the limitations of smartphone cameras. As the first one, I would mention limited light-gathering capability: Due to their smaller lenses and sensors, smartphone cameras have limitations in capturing low-light scenes and may produce more noise compared to DSLR or mirrorless cameras. However, due to the development of image processing algorithms, they are still upgrading in this matter. The next con is also slower performance: The touch-based controls on smartphones, though convenient for general usage, can be slower in terms of responsiveness compared to physical buttons found on dedicated cameras, impacting the overall speed of operation. While smartphone cameras are excellent for capturing images intended for online publication and social media, their limitations become more apparent when it comes to printing large-sized images. The smaller lenses and sensors may result in reduced image quality and detail when printed in larger formats. Lastly, I could also mention the lack of professional appearance. However, sometimes it could be an advantage!

The experience of using a smartphone camera has greatly influenced my approach to capturing landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits. The convenience, portability, and advanced capabilities of smartphone cameras have allowed me to explore new angles and experiment with composition. However, when it comes to wedding, documentary, or sports photography, where speed and reliability are crucial, dedicated cameras with physical buttons provide a more efficient and secure handling experience in fast-paced situations.

The process behind my mobile photography photoshoot in Cieszyn, Poland involved exploring the picturesque and compact nature of my hometown, motivated by its rich history as one of the oldest cities in Poland.

Familiarize yourself with your smartphone camera: Take the time to read and understand the features and settings of your smartphone camera. Experiment with different modes, manual controls, and editing options before you start capturing images. This will help you have better control over the outcome of your photographs and tailor them to your creative vision. Understand the role of algorithms: Smartphones often use algorithms to enhance images automatically. While these algorithms can be helpful, it's essential to have a good grasp of how they work and their impact on your photos. Adjust the level of intervention and processing according to your preferences and style by exploring the camera settings.
