Woman Sends Her Boyfriend A Pic Of Her Hairy Legs To Have A Laugh, Doesn’t Expect He Would Respond By Shaming Her
InterviewOver the last few years, beauty standards around body hair have been steadily changing, largely as a result of many women happily rocking their natural hairy bits. More and more females are moving on from body-hair stigma and starting a mini-revolution by not shaving and encouraging other people to let it grow.
However, when TikTok user bonedrymilkers decided to embrace her “winter coat” and send a picture of her unshaven legs to her boyfriend, things did not go smoothly. What was supposed to be sweet and funny turned sour—the BF replied that it’s “kinda gross” and “unhygienic for a female,” which was a glaring red flag in the woman’s eyes.
In just a few days, the clip went viral, amassing more than 15.2M views and almost 86K comments. Check out her full video below, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comment section below.
Over the holidays, this TikTok user decided to embrace her “winter coat,” sending a photo of her unshaven legs to her boyfriend
The conversation turned sour when her BF said it’s “gross” and “unhygienic for a female”

Later on, the woman posted another clip with an update on this whole situation

After some time, the TikTok user decided to post another video with an update for her followers. It seems that after exchanging a few more texts, the couple talked everything over and did in fact break up. As bonedrymilkers wrote in her caption, “It’s obvious I wasted my time.”
A vast majority of her followers were on her side. Many wrote that the boyfriend’s reaction was completely inappropriate, others started a discussion about double standards in the comments.
Bored Panda reached out to Karin Lesnik-Oberstein, a Professor of Critical Theory at the University of Reading and author of The Last Taboo: Women and Body Hair, to find out why letting our natural hair grow is still deeply stigmatized.
According to the professor, many women today feel the pressure to remove their body hair because it is “part of the construction of femininity in our culture (and most Western cultures, although to differing degrees and in some groups differently too).”
When asked about why some partners may see hairy legs as “gross” or “unhygienic”, Lesnik-Oberstein said it’s because they are traditionally seen as masculine. “Masculinity in a woman repels many heterosexual men (and also many other sexual identities, by the way),” she explained. “This is a way to uphold the limits between differing sexual and gender identities.”
After all, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to this issue. To shave or not to shave—it’s completely up to you. What truly matters is that you feel safe and welcomed as you are, with all of your body hair. “A partner who does not accept that too is not right for you,” the professor said.
“But for many women, shaving is something that they want to do for themselves too and they enjoy their partner admiring their shaven legs or other shaven body parts,” she added. “See what is really right for you, but never allow any partner to be emotionally or physically abusive to you (including being verbally aggressive) about anything!”
Still, we are surrounded by many unrealistic beauty standards that can sometimes lead to feeling shame. “Not shaving or shaving are not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in general but this depends on what kind of person you are.”
“This is also true for other issues such as wearing make-up, dieting, cosmetic surgery and so on, but it can take time and exploration of your feelings about yourself and your body to work out what is really best for you, so do take that time,” Karin Lesnik-Oberstein suggested.
Her followers were united and saw the boyfriend’s behavior as a red flag
Every time I hear women referred to as "females", I brace for a crappy opinion.
It seems to be the norm. Which is anoying because sometimes is useful to be able to talk about sex and not gender and "female" would be the word to use. But in colloquial conversations nowadays it means most of the time "i am a misogyn". (I know that AFAB exists but many people doesnt know what it is and it also doesnt work in other languages)
Load More Replies...He was an asshole with how he handled it, but it's ok if he doesn't like it and it turns him off. Plain and simple. He could have been much nicer about it, but you like what you like and don't what you don't. Maybe they're just not compatible in this sense, and that's fine, but it is 100% ok for him to not be attracted to leg hair....
He is an idiot for saying it is "unhygienic". But saying it is a "turn off" is a perfectly valid opinion that he should have expressed more politely.
Load More Replies...I know body hair is natural but honestly I find it kinda gross in general on men and women. However it's a personal choice to shave or not and the whole double standard about it is just wrong.
But see, this makes more sense because you realize that the hair that grows out of men is the same as the hair that grows out of women. It makes no sense to say “this is ok for men but not for women” when it's the SAME THING. Men's hair isn't made of of some magical golden thread. It'd be cool if it was, but it's not. If it's “unhygienic for women,” then the bf needs to shave his legs too.
Load More Replies...Wow, why would you share such a personal conversation with the world? Can't think for yourself and need the opinion of strangers to know if this was ok or not? ESH!
literally all of these "aita" stories are monetised. the same stories are all over the web on different sites. The national press has started posting a few now on a slow news day.
Load More Replies...If he finds it unattractive, he could've talked to her about it in a more constructive manner, I grant her that. But she didn't have to post their chat on social media, that wasn't cool.
Honestly, they're both being jerky here. He's calling natural leg hair "unhygenic" when he undoubtedly has hairy legs himself, and she's posting hurtful stuff about him on social media. Do the world a favor, kids, and break up.
Load More Replies...This gives me 16yr old vibes, so immature. He's wrong about it being unhygienic but he also has the right to not like it, she pushed this argument. I personally like shaving, it feels nice after but to each their own, be hairy if you want, but don't call your boyfriend a d**k for not liking it
The boyfriend is clearly in the wrong saying that's anhygienic but he is entitled to have a preference. Surely he could have expressed it in a more sensitive way, but if my boyfriend came home one day with his crotch completely shaven (which for me is aesthetically appalling) I should be able to say : "do whatever you want, it's your body; but I don't like it". That being said, I also want to add that it's difficult to appreciate something "different from normal". The guy has probably seen hairless legs all his life (previous girlfriends, movies, ads, p0rn, etc), hairless female bodies is what he's used to. So I understand it's difficult to see beauty in something that, for you, is not usual. I hope I've made myself clear, I know perfectly well that body hair is completely natural; I probably shave much less than the average woman, to be frank. But my mind still associates body hair=ugly, 'cause I've been conditioned to do so by society.
you can find it "gross" all you want, but its not unhygenic. And your girlfriend/wife is allowed to not constantly groom for your pleasure.
Why would I shave my legs? The amount of maintenance for up-keeping of shaving body parts is Rediculas and expensive to boot. Unless you're in a water sports where it's required for speed. Then do what makes you happy. I shave my armpits in summer due to how icky they get. But otherwise I am not going to waste my person time (which I have little of anyways) to upkeep a social "norm"... and if you need me to shave my body dude... you better be ready to do the same!
I get that a lot of men don't like the way it looks/feels, and I think that's fair enough. But saying it's unhygienic is just idiotic.
Yup, it shows that he lacks the intelligence to comprehend why he doesn't like the way it looks/feels...
Load More Replies...Just. Don't. Worry. About. Having. Hair. Please. The weird sh*t we see in the ER even in Covid pandemic.... from waxing, shaving, "scaping" parts.... Ugh.
She shouldn’t have posted a private conversation. And he was doing more than just stating an opinion. He was basically trying to shame her or imply she was doing something wrong just by not having shaved. All he had to do was say that he didn’t care for it and was hoping she was going to shave soon. No insults, no dumb hygiene comment.
It has become so ubiquitous in the US for women to shave their legs that it is going to be hard to adjust our preferences. I think a lot of men assume women don't really grow leg hair to begin with, at least when they're young. Maybe it's something that should change -- it seems highly inconvenient and unnatural to shave -- but the custom is quite ingrained at this point.
"I think a lot of men assume women don't really grow leg hair to begin with" That's just ridiculous.
Load More Replies...I really hate when people try to say it's not hygienic for women to have hair in same places as men... Why would it be unhygienic for women to have leg or armpit hair but it's perfectly fine for a man and noone tells him it's unhygienic??? On average women don't sweat more than men there, those hair don't get more dirty than man's hair so.. where is that unhygienic part from? Oh yeah, patriarchy. Also preferences are fine, they can be communicated in nicer way, and also some stuff can and should be accepted. If your partner doesn't like to shave her legs, don't be a d**k about it, things really can be said in a nice way without telling her she should be embarrassed for not meeting your personal beauty standards for women. Women accept men for not shaving their armpits so what's so hard in accepting women's natural hair???
I never shave in the winter, my family has the same mindset as this guy. Periodically, I'll tease them with a "check out my hairy legs" while I pet it. My family has grown more use to it and most don't bat an eye now. It still bothers my mom a bit, but that does make it more fun to tease her about it. It's sad that natural body hair is treated as such. Why do people think it's so gross? Hairless is the weird state. It's depressing how much women are socially pressed into changing their bodies just to be accepted.
Did you know that only around 22% of males wash their hands after going to the toilet? Don't talk to women about hygiene doofus! Drop this guy, please.
So leg hair is perfectly safe for dudes but pathogenic for ladies?
The guy was a jerk for talking to her that way, she was a jerk for showing him up on social media. In all honesty, most men will find leg hair 'a major turn off' but that doesn't give us the right to demand shaved legs...
If leg hair is so 'unhygienic and gross' maybe everyone in the world should just get every bit of hair on their bodies waxed or electrolyzed (?) Off. See how well y'all do in winter then
This dude is a red flag. I bet he is one of those "manly" men. Big ego and homophobic to the bone. Let this be the best relationship test ever, ladies! Try this after 6 months of dating and you will know if he's worth the ride. If not: NEXT!
Don't get all this fuss, The guy is a certified moron and she should have texted him right after his first insult: "Baffling Baboon, Bye, Blocked."
I kept waiting for her to ask if his leg hair was also 'unhygienic'.
And what about guys' hairy chests or armpits or other body parts. are they all hygienic? And still they will not shave if we ask them will they?
Leave the crappy b***h. I'm male myself, and I actually am happy when women have abundant body hait because they aren't letting toxic society tell them what to do. To all women, body hair, or no body hair, listen- I DON'T CARE. And no one else should. ( Don't know how much this opinion counts, I'm not attracted to women but still).
The dude is allowed an opinion, albeit it's an insensitive one, but I honestly wonder: how is leghair unhygenic? I mean, what does the skin on the leg produce that makes hair unsanitary when the hairs on your head are considered normal? You wash your leghair by default as often as you wash your head, so how does this work? Where is the logic? And why is her leghair unhygenic but his apparently isn't? I want to respect people's opinions but AT LEAST HAVE THEM MAKE SENSE!
So happy to see level headed comments here. Everyone has preferences. Doesn't mean you have to BTA about it.
Wow those are hairy! 😆 I mean if it turns him off fair enough. But he's wrong about the hygiene bit. She comes across as a bit of a wagon herself though. I'd be pissed if a partner was putting private convos online. I'd be thinking better watch what I say or else I'll end up on TikTok or Reddit.
I think they're both being jerks. His reaction is over the top, but why-oh-why did she send him that pic, and why is she sharing this personal info on the internet?
I'll probably get downvoted, but I think she over reacted. Sure, he was wrong with saying it was unhygienic and saying 'talk to me after you shave', but she went right on on attack as some as he disagreed with her. She started posting their conversation on TikTok while they were in the middle of it. She showed some really bad form. He is entitled to his opinion, though he handled it badly, but she is the one who escalated it so fast.
"Unhygienic for a female". As opposed to sterilising man hair...
First I want to say that if you truly love someone then you don't see what is on the outside you only see them for who they are as a person. It seems to me like the were going to break up eventually either way. I say this because she commented on how strange he had been acting lately towards her. To me that was a super red flag but I also think that she did push a bit in instigating a negative outcome. Pick and choose your battles...
I have read people saying he was rude in his replay but everybody has different tastes, therefore he has the right to whether like hairy legs or not. I do believe that as people in society we have to be critical of the norms society imposed on us, so even though we have the right to like something and dislike other things, we have the duty of being critical of what we like and dislike. Otherwise under the umbrella of "it is our right" we impose suffering on others, in ourselves, for some stupid beauty norms created for someone, and imposed on us.
My soon to be be husband couldn’t care less the last time I shaved. As long as I’m happy 🤷🏻♀️ How the hell is it unhygienic for one but ok for the other? I’d dump his ass personally
Now I'm really wanting to know why it's fine for men but unhygenic for women. Does women's leg hair secrete some vile mucus that men's leg hair doesn't? Does it trap dirt? Do dogs come and c**k their legs on women's legs when they're hairy? Please explain, sexist idiot
I'm so glad they broke up. She deserves loving, respectful, friends and partners. Her ex was abusive, brainwashed, buffoonish, misogynistic and manipulative.
When I was a girl only FAST women (aka promiscuous) women shaved their legs and body hair. Why do men see it as unattractive? Because it is only adult human females who have this hair --legs and pubic and axillary hair – do men secretly list after pre-pubertal children??? Never mind girls -- after menopause (no more men please?) it will go again 😊
Ladies! Really! When I was a girl only fast girls shaved their legs!! It is natural as is public hair and ailliary hair. If it is OK for men to have body hair, what not adult women? because make like to fancy prepubescent girks????? It'l go agasin after menopause
I personally find leg hair on MEN as a turn off too but I dont pressure my husband to shave them as he thinks other men would laugh at him for having shaved legs. the social norms really need to change. I also cannot imagine myself to go out with unshaved legs in summer, but in winter nobody knows :-D and you know hair is the last thing you care about if you love the person
I mean he obviously shouldnt have reacted how he did, as the original photo was meant more humorous way like "look how my legs look without shaving". But I would say lot of men are conditioned to see women with shaved legs, like every possible series/movie has women with smooth legs, on dates women have shaved legs. And if you dont have sisters and your mom also shaved/wears pants then the first time you see woman with hairy legs might be in your first long term relationship, so obviously it might look weird.
He better not wear a beard. Now THOSE are unhygienic unless one washes their face/mouth numerous times a day.
I believe I would have been laughing to hard to be grossed out by it. I'd have asked if that was her brother's legs.🤣 But I definitely would not have put her down like that.
This kind of hit close to home but the overall conversation was kinda... immature? I come from a hairy family. All the females have unwanted hair and BEFORE I KNEW all the problems I'd have with shaving certain areas instead of plucking, I shaved my arms, legs, underarms and... yeah, my face. Now I don't bother shaving except for my face because it just takes too much work. Granted, I hate being naked around anyone because I'm ashamed of all the hair and yes, there are days and days when I don't shave my face (beard/mustache/sideburns) and I get really embarrassed and ashamed and etc. but... gods, I just wish I had the money to NOT HAVE UNWANTED HAIR all over the place. Frankly, I'd leave my face alone if people wouldn't stare and otherwise make such a big deal about it. Besides, have you SEEN some guys being hairy and NOT taking care of it? I don't mind men with facial hair and such, but if you aren't going to keep it clean and maintain it...
The only thing this guy has done wrong is say it is unhygienic which is silly. Other than that, he is perfectly entitled to his own opinion on what he finds attractive. The girlfriend is childish, trying trying publicly humiliate him, then telling him his opinion is stupid and that 'she shouldn't have to put up with this, and she deserves better'
Not looking to get attacked here, really hoping to learn. I'm a female, I refer to myself as female/woman. I refer to males as male/man. Have I to stop saying "male"? Why would I be offended by someone calling me "female" over "woman"? I know the definition of all of these words and I have NO CLUE what the problem is and I'm starting to feel confused and dumb and I don't like it. Please can someone explain?
Incels hate women and tend to use the term "female". Someone else will have to explain why we want to let incels decide what words are okay. I'm not looking forward to a society where "female" is an insult. I thought I'd seen misogyny in all its aspects, but this is new
Load More Replies...I mean, everyone is entitled to their opinion. His should get him dumped. Had my first experience with female leg hair in the 80s when I got stationed in Germany. Didn't bother me then and doesn't bother me now, with my wife of 30 yrs. (although the German girl had dark, thick hair lol). It's not my preference either, but who am I to demand someone else shave their legs?
Yeah that's disgusting. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's beautiful. Goes for men and women.
You are stating that as if it is a fact... when it is an opinion. A perfectly valid opinion, but an opinion none the less. The only reason you think it is disgusting is because you have been taught to think that.
Load More Replies...If hair on legs is "unhygienic" on a woman then it is the same on a man and he needs to start shaving his too.
Not going to lie, hairy legs and hairy armpits are gross and I'm a woman. He could have handled the situation better. saying its a turn off is a valid point but maybe he could have worded it differently.
Sorry, but I kind of agree with him. It does look gross, but they're not my legs so my opinion doesn't really matter. Also, having leg hair is not unhygienic - it's just unappealing.
Seems made up. Are women typically able to grow such thick hair on the thighs?
trust me we are, but not all of women, depends probably on hormone levels. Also it looks different when you are blond and when you are not. Some ppl also have a lot of hair on their arms between elbow and wrist and they shave it. hair is natural everywhere it depends on your preferences if you want to shave or not
Load More Replies...There were a lot of red flags here pointing to the fact that these two people are not mature enough to be in a serious relationship. Neither was right. Shave, don’t shave, nobody should care but why send the picture in the first place? He should have known his reply would hurt her feelings although I think she put him in a situation where telling her the truth of how he felt about it would not be accepted by her anyway. Did she want him to lie? Then as if this whole thing isn’t weird enough already, she posts it all online? Not cool, that means he can’t trust you with his true feelings on a subject nor can he trust you with private conversations. Not sure how he came to the conclusion that hairy legs are unhygienic but perhaps if they had discussed it further in private, she could have explained to him that this is not true. Thank goodness these people broke up. Hopefully they learn and grow from this experience and move onto more meaningful relationships with other people
Not unhygienic, but I know women who's armpit hair is longer than that on their head. And I'm not going to fight my way through the Amazonas rainforest to find the pearl.
Anyone seen Bad Moms? That scene where Milla Kunis catches her husband jacking off to a woman with a massive bush? That to me is far sexier than some shaved tart who looks like a 12 year old. Hair is there for a reason.
Yuck. Sorry I'm with the dude. Not for me - she can go be hairy all she likes with someone else but that would turn me right off too. Works for some people but... nah I'd be out.
