Insecure Artist Attacks Company For Recognizing Child’s Fan Art And Ignoring ‘Real Artists’, Gets Destroyed With A One-Liner
Imagine being so insecure as an artist that even the cutesy drawings of a little girl could arouse feelings of jealousy and resentment. This is precisely what happened when Shane Hickey, of Chandler, Arizona, tweeted out his daughter’s cutesy pic of a videogame character to the good folk over at Overwatch. “Hi, team! My daughter created a new character,” he wrote. “Her name is Birst. She’d love to know your thoughts.”
It all began when proud father Shane Hickey shared his daughter’s imaginative creation for a new character on the popular videogame
The game is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter which asks gamers to “join over 40 million players as you take your place in the world of Overwatch.”
“Choose your hero from a diverse cast of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities. Bend time, defy physics and unleash an array of extraordinary powers and weapons. Engage your enemies in iconic locations from around the globe in the ultimate team-based shooter.”

The video game makers, sniffing a nice opportunity for some positive marketing, were quick to reply. “Our artists were so inspired by this that they created their own fan art!” they said. “Hope your daughter loves it!”

Now for a little girl, something like this would surely mean the world. The encouragement that Overwatch showed could inspire her to become an artist of the future and give her a real feeling of achievement. Wholesome, right? As the tweet went viral people applauded the Overwatch crew for being so adorable and caring to their fans, so it was a real ‘win-win’ for everyone involved.
Well, almost everyone. One artist couldn’t stand to see a child getting the success that they felt they were more deserving of, and wrote a bitter post about it. But why? Who knows. Maybe the artist is struggling, have a rough time and is low on self-esteem. Why else would you begrudge a child a little encouragement?
Needless to say, the internet was having none of it and proceeded to take down the ‘real artist’ with some biting responses. Sure, everyone is allowed to vent their frustrations from time to time when having a particularly bad day. But, as the old saying goes, “pick on somebody your own size,” and leave little girls and their cute drawings out of it!

He deserved what he got!! 😤 what a jerk!! They didn’t hire a six year old to do character designs they just redrew her (awesome) character professionally! It was sweet and probably made her day, it doesn’t even impact him he’s just being a jerk to be a jerk!

Obviously the comment was ridiculous. But I always find it bizarre, that so much fuss and judgement can come from a single comment; Look at it like this, have you ever posted something foolish without really even thinking about it? Think of all the ppl online too, that might be going through mental illness, learning disabilities, or high on drugs, etc. There's really no need to take one random persons comment so seriously.
I think its sad people are focusing on the wrong part of this very cool story. Especially since the incident was 3 years ago.
This rectaljustice should answer first the question "What is art?", then "Is the work of art a creation by an artist or the artist is defined ad such by his work of art?" and only after having answered these questions (note: bibliography needed!) he should post comments on other people's work. I think it is great that the company did this! The so called "artist" is just jealous that a six year old is more talented than him! A true artist will appreciate a person's attempt to connect with them! As the saying goes "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Besides, with everything thing that is going on in the world, we really need to appreciate the small things in life because sometimes, that is what keeps the negative from being so overwhelming.
