Recently, the brand Gillette, known for their men’s shaving products, has caused controversy due to their new TV commercial which addresses the MeToo movement, sexual harassment, and bullying. The new controversial ad uses the same tagline that the company has been using for the past 30 years – “The best a man can get.” But this time, it took on a completely new vision which got some of Gillette’s customers angry and confused, as some have called out the brand for “insulting their user base.”

The brand released an ad campaign addressing the problems, which have been discussed openly in recent years. The video opens up with Idris Elba and other men in close-up shots with a voice-over audible in the background: “Bullying, the ‘MeToo’ movement against sexual harassment, toxic masculinity, is this the best a man can get?” a voice asks rhetorically, followed by an image of angry teenagers chasing another boy.

The ad for this commercial campaign was released on Sunday and already has almost 600,000 dislikes in comparison to 223,000 likes on its official Youtube video. One comment after another, people are denouncing Gillette’s products and many are wondering whether the use of controversial topics as a marketing strategy has gone too far.
Pankaj Bhalla, Gillette’s North America brand director told media that “Actually a discussion is necessary. If we don’t talk about it, I don’t think real change will happen”

He expressed his hopes that men who watch the video will be inspired to be role models for young children and will teach them how to stand up to bad behavior and treat people with respect.

It then goes on to show Terry Crews, who’s known to have experienced sexual assault, saying that “men need to hold other men accountable.” The commercial then takes a different turn and shows men standing up to inappropriate behavior. The voice-over continues: “To say the right thing, to act the right way. Some already are – in ways big and small. But ‘some’ is not enough. Because the boys watching today will be the men of tomorrow.”

Why do men find it offensive if someone says "hey, be a decent person and not an asshole". If you know you haven't been an asshole then it's not targeted towards you. But if you get angry at an ad like this, I start to feel like it's because you see yourself in the toxic behaviour.

I'm not understanding the "just sell your product and don't get socially involved" attitudes. Don't these people want companies to show some humanity, some dynamism? This is hardly the first advert to align itself with with a social issue. The fact that it was a positive message seems to be ignored, which tells me that some people just want to be upset no matter what.

Tons of companies have social impact as one of their goals. And even if achieving them doesn't give one monetary bonuses, it is beneficial for other ways like company PR, uniting the team and feeling good about the job they do. What's bad about it? Sometimes chosen mission and social or environmentaly-friendly values of the company also become the criteria while making major decisions. And hey their product is razors not social change and if they try to combine both, sounds good to me. Not always you can nail something from the first try, let's hope the next attempt would be better
Gillette's only goal is, indeed, to make money. However, the person whose idea was this advertisement, had more than just one single purpose. Same goes for the employees involved. And Gillette approves because it gives the company a good image, while the people projecting this kind of advertising feel some satisfaction. My point is, a big company is about capitalism, but a big company is made of people, and people are capable of empathy, people will find decent jobs to survive and take advantage to make a positive change when and where they can.

I think it's because instead of leaving it to "don't be a dick" they went into stuff like the MeToo movement which went way overboard and ruined lives it should've left alone, and they used that horrible TYT witch. As someone working daily with boys growing up with absent fathers and absent positive male role models I am sure that if you get this upset about the basic message, it is because it is striking a nerve. I work in a male dominated business and I am the only woman at my firm. My bosses are excellent and the majority of my co-workers too, but there is one man who is very toxic. As a complete narcissist he constantly tries to intimidate me, belittles me, and sometimes (more and more often lately) he has become verbally abusive. The latter escalated after I turned him down when he wanted to have dinner with me. I do not generally bother with him, we work different hours but technically I am his boss. I've tried to deal with him about work stuff which is a must, but it often ends with either one of us saying something nasty and I always end up crying or wasting all my energy thinking of this. My bosses however are awesome and have just recently started to realize what an ass the man in question is, so they deal with him for me. But sometimes he seeks me up and like tries to pick a fight with me. I am both strong and smart and that is probably why he "chose" me to bother.

Industry would be best served if they just served the public, no matter what their views might be. Gender identity is especially a sore issue. When you include the general population, there are relatively few who identify as transgender. The idea of joining what you see as a social movement, alienates a whole group of angry people and adds little to your business by those who believe like you do.

Obviously there's nothing wrong with the messages themselves that Gillette is putting forth (with the exception of roughhousing being bad - that seems misguided) - don't bully, don't (sexually) assault people, be kind to each other, etc. The problem is that it's focusing on a specific gender instead of making the message about people in general, i. e., it's not "be a good person" but be "a good male" as if those bad behaviors were somehow inherently male (below the Youtube video Gillette even states: "Bullying. Harassment. Is this the best a man can get?", thus generalizing men as bullies and harassers). If the ad would've been about both males and females doing bad things and then encouraging people to unite and help each other, this would have been a much better social ad.
A) Their historic advertisement was "The best a man can get." This is a modern updating of that slogan. B) Women don't have so much of a problem actually being kind and expressing emotion. It's been inculcated in them for millennia. Nobody's saying they can't behave badly, but society already judges them for any "aberrant" behavior. Toxic masculinity doesn't just hurt other people; it hurts the men, themselves, who feel trapped in a certain stereotype by other men and by outdated societal messages about masculinity. Having a major company come out and say, 'it's not "wussy" to be a good guy; it's who we all should be,' sends a message that 'you are not alone in wanting more out of yourself and your life.' Even if a boy or man doesn't see this message in his immediate community, it's a good thing for him to see that there *are* many, many others in the world who will applaud him for being the good guy, not deride him for it.

I don't know how to feel about this. I admire the message, but I don't see what the message has to do with their product. It feels like they're taking a good message and trying to use it expecting that we'll associate their brand with progression. However whether you agree with the message or not or associate the message with the product... it certainly got people talking.
The issue with this ad isn't the fact that it's telling men to be better, it's the constant generalization of men and the fact that it in its self is a product of toxic feminism. Boys are allowed to play rough, the only people I hear "boy will be boys" from are actually females, and so what I a man swoops in to save you from embarrassment (What i think she meant). I like the ad. I think it is great that a corporation that makes mens' products put it out there. There is nothing "radically feminist" about it. In fact, the content upholds very biblical values about how to treat other people. I am an 80 yo woman with multiple degrees earned in two types of universities, one had just recently become integrated and admitted women and the other two had women and men students. In all three universities the areas of hard science had very few women compared to men. While we studied as hard as the men and made just the same grades, it was clear they really liked us because we used our brains to solve the problems presented to us by our professors. Others liked us because they had never seen or known women like us and they like the fact that we were approachable, fun to be with but did not respond sexually them. It wasn't that they weren't handsome and very attractive because they certainly were. It just wasn't appropriate in that setting and we knew that. They were gentlemen, funny, kind and so astute. It is my observation women today in and out of academia are provocative using sex to achieve an academic end and emotional to a degree that is unwarranted.
You are to be applauded for the progress that you've made in your life, but you should also understand by now that not everyone's experiences are the same. I've worked in science and tech for 20 years now and those guys are *far* less likely to be the same sort of toxic as men in other areas of life. (Scientists in general are far less sexual and emotional -- as you, yourself, illustrate.) My father's generation of men (he's 89) is also more likely overall to be superficially "gentlemanly" than later generations. But they also sweep a lot under the carpet and refuse to look truth in the eye. It's not that women weren't just as abused in generations past: society simply pretended it didn't exist. I don't think it's right to blame women for wanting everything out in the open so they can't be abused behind closed doors, and for the blame to be placed where it belongs: on the abusers.

It can really be hard for people when you turn the mirror around and ask them to 'judge' themselves, challenge themselves to be more than what they know. Usually that effort to foster personal growth is met with negativity. Only strong/courageous individuals can view the challenge to look inward, not as a threat or an attack, but a opportunity to become better than we were yesterday. I believe that's what this add is designed to do. The delta between like and dislikes shows me that there is still A LOT of work that we as men need to do to ensure that the types of negative behaviors portrayed in the add are not passed on to the next generation. This is a huge responsibility, one that will scare many men away. I have lived with this monkey on my back and I know how it feels. I will try my best to ensure my boys never know that monkey.

Using the word "some" implies that only the select few/minority of men are "real" men... The TRUTH is that the majority of men in America (and in most civilized societies) ARE good/ real men, who do not abuse or condone the abuse of women, children, the weak or vulnerable. This new world view of men and masculinity being "toxic" has become a common theme as of late and THAT is what is not only UNTRUE but offensive, denigrating, sexist, hateful and harmful.
Why are people mad about this ad? Let's pretend that the ad was about "toxic femininity" or "toxic homosexuality". It dumbfounds me how people believe that an ad can't be racist because it's stereotyping white men (this was not a diverse ad at all!) or can't be sexist because it's stereotyping men in general (because apparently women can't he aggressive, violent and nasty) and it can't be heterophobic (did you see any men aggressively hitting on men at all?). It is sexist, it is racist, and all of its -isms ruin the rather nice message at the end. Why didn't they just use the second half of the ad without all the bashing?
Here is the biggest problem with the add: The add was definitely targeting the Millennial in hopes that they will increase sales since companies like Dollar Shave have taken a huge amount of their market. What does that mean? Gillette didn't care about anyone's feelings really, which perhaps may make all of us wonder if they really care about their customers or are just trying to sell products. THIS COMMERCIAL WAS A MARKETING STRATEGY BECAUSE THEY WANT TO SURVIVE SINCE THEY ARE DYING. At the end of the day, they don't care about any movements. Right now, the biggest "SOCIAL MEDIA MOVEMENT" is the 3rd Wave of Feminists' war against men. And because you can buy anything online that you can at a store, this was the marketing strategy they have taken in hopes to increase sales online. THEY ABSOLUTELY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS OR MINE about the add. All they wanted was sales to make up for their almost 30% downfall in the market place. WE ALL GOT PLAYED.

I think this commercial is perfect.
I feel that the men who attack the ad are the same men who are unconsciously guilty of that behavior and don't like being called out for it. I watched the video. What is the problem with this ad exactly? Sometimes people react negatively to an ad because of hearsay. Somebody they know is upset about it, and they take that person's point of view as cash without watching the ad themselves and forming their own opinion. What I feel the people responding negatively to this ad fail to see, is that this is not demeaning men, but rather calling on men to hold their fellow brethren to a higher standard that empowers men & women. Respect is what makes a man a man. The people responding negative, seemed to have held on to some "catch phrases" and skewed it to mean the ad was saying to dull down the part of men that makes them unique. To those, I would ask them to watch the ad again, with those lenses as rose colored as they may be, and specifically point out how any statement in the context it was given is damaging.
