People Are Throwing Away Their Gillette Products After The Company Releases A Controversial Ad
Recently, the brand Gillette, known for their men’s shaving products, has caused controversy due to their new TV commercial which addresses the MeToo movement, sexual harassment, and bullying. The new controversial ad uses the same tagline that the company has been using for the past 30 years – “The best a man can get.” But this time, it took on a completely new vision which got some of Gillette’s customers angry and confused, as some have called out the brand for “insulting their user base.”
Gillette’s newest commercial isn’t about shaving or razors – this time it focuses on social issues, such as toxic masculinity and the #MeToo movement

The brand released an ad campaign addressing the problems, which have been discussed openly in recent years. The video opens up with Idris Elba and other men in close-up shots with a voice-over audible in the background: “Bullying, the ‘MeToo’ movement against sexual harassment, toxic masculinity, is this the best a man can get?” a voice asks rhetorically, followed by an image of angry teenagers chasing another boy.
The ad features images of bullying, mansplaining, and catcalling

The ad for this commercial campaign was released on Sunday and already has almost 600,000 dislikes in comparison to 223,000 likes on its official Youtube video. One comment after another, people are denouncing Gillette’s products and many are wondering whether the use of controversial topics as a marketing strategy has gone too far.
Pankaj Bhalla, Gillette’s North America brand director told media that “Actually a discussion is necessary. If we don’t talk about it, I don’t think real change will happen”

He expressed his hopes that men who watch the video will be inspired to be role models for young children and will teach them how to stand up to bad behavior and treat people with respect.
Towards the end of the video, the narrator says that “something has finally changed,” referencing to the #MeToo movement

It then goes on to show Terry Crews, who’s known to have experienced sexual assault, saying that “men need to hold other men accountable.” The commercial then takes a different turn and shows men standing up to inappropriate behavior. The voice-over continues: “To say the right thing, to act the right way. Some already are – in ways big and small. But ‘some’ is not enough. Because the boys watching today will be the men of tomorrow.”

The commercial has caused quite an uproar and some public personas took it to Twitter to express their disapproval – some in the form of jokes

However, it is worth mentioning that Ricky Gervais later added, that he wasn’t opposing to the ad itself, but rather just making an innocent joke.
But some people were downright angry

In case you feel a little lost, somebody asked on Reddit “Why are people mad about the Gillette ad?” and here are some answers

Share on FacebookThe people who hate this add scare me. It's literally telling people to not be toxic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. A man telling another man what they're doing is wrong isn't sexist, it's the first guy being mature and holding others accountable. It's called being a good person and if that offends you, theirs the door. App-5c3e56...0db34.jpeg
Michal, How many of this 'feminist' that you bash have raped of killed men? We have in Spain already 5 women this year (in less than 20 days) killed by their male partners. Last week two men raped a 12yo girl... I could keep going...
Load More Replies...I always find amusing how this kind of men who trow tantrums for such small things are later the ones to say 'everybody gets ofended for everythibg nowadays'
Bah, it's always the same, hey. It's a strategy that's been around forever. A strategy that's been used by none other than the president of the then strongest country in the world to get elected. It works quite well.
Load More Replies...So what if it's only a marketing ploy? It's not like they're using neo-nazi propoganda to sell razors. Even if they don't mean a thing in what they say, the message is true and doesn't harm anyone.
Oh but it harms the insecure. Look at poor Kevin. Looks like his whole world is collapsing around him. Must be pretty distressing.
Load More Replies...Honest to God, I don't understand why people got mad at this ad. Like you might feel like it's pandering to a movement, but if it makes you not want to buy all P&G products....for real, what are you so mad at?
and if instead this had been an add about toxic femininity? (I suppose that could be a thing... no idea what it'd look like though...) would that not offend?
Load More Replies...I'm not understanding the "just sell your product and don't get socially involved" attitudes. Don't these people want companies to show some humanity, some dynamism? This is hardly the first advert to align itself with with a social issue. The fact that it was a positive message seems to be ignored, which tells me that some people just want to be upset no matter what.
If they want to show humanity perhaps they should start elsewhere. Nike did a lot of virtue signaling while employing child labor and sweatshop labor all over Asia. "But we're good guys! Trust us! Ignore the 8 year old Asian child that cuts his hand making our shoes for pennies a day!"
Load More Replies...Yes it is a great ad, and everyone gets it my friend. It's just that there are way too many horrible people in this world.
Load More Replies...I was rewatching Seinfeld and Cheers and i bet if those shows are aired today it will definitely be cancelled.
Not to mention Married with Children. I can just see public burnings of effigies of Al Bundy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgDtgyzVZYk
Load More Replies...I don't understand the uproar on this. isn't it exactly what we are telling men in real life? Don't bully, don't sexually assault, don't sexual harass. Why is it different just because it is in a commercial? Why is it wrong when a company is talking about it? Honestly, i just don't get it.. This is the behavior we are saying we want men to stop, yet here is a respected company saying the same thing and they are getting boycotted? and ridiculed? why? Really fraggin strange
I wonder if the feminist movement faced this kind of resistance from women when it started, well my grandma still calls whore every "modern girl" but how common was it back then?
Giovanni, yes and feminism still faces a backlash today. If you want a glimpse, Google “I don’t need feminism because.” It’s a whole bunch of women expressing the same kinds of sentiments that these “not all men!” commenters are.
Load More Replies...You know that the human race is f****d when "don't be a d**k" is a controversial message.
Wow, seeing some of the negative comments are a HOOT! I'm glad the majority here sees that this Ad isn't the problem and I'm glad those that oppose it are so vocal and upfront about being fragile and insecure.
Of course that there is toxic feminity: Being submisive, not intelligent, dont go to school, obey men under all circupstances... The difference with toxic masculinity is that luckily we have been fighting toxic feminity for over a century...
Load More Replies...I don't see anything wrong with this add. Points out how extremely important it is for us, adults, to set a good example to children so they can grow up to be decent people.
People are offended by THIS but they're not offended by the PResident of The United States having an affair with a porn star and paying her off to keep quiet. Yeah, I'd say our priorities are a little messed up.
And proclaiming that he grabs women's pussies, making fun of the handicapped, insulting Gold Star parents and school shooting victims, and oh, so much more. This is exactly the problem. The guys freaking out about the ad feel like it describes them because it does. They're the same people who put a reflection of themselves in office.
Load More Replies...The video did not condemn male behavior. It condemned bad male behavior. I don't get people having issues with that.
My main reason for not buying Gillette's razors is that I can never find a damn coupon! I haven't paid for razors in over 4 years...thank you Schick & Bic.
Direct from their website: http://www.thebestamancanbe.org; As part of The Best Men Can Be campaign, Gillette is committing to donate $1 million per year for the next three years to non-profit organizations executing programs in the United States designed to inspire, educate and help men of all ages achieve their personal “best” and become role models for the next generation.
As one writer on Twitter said, "I have to wonder if these guys see a Mother’s Against Drunk Driving PSA and immediately become enraged about being accused of being a drunk driver." I say, If you can't differentiate between "masculine" and "a*****e," you ARE the problem. But please... Keep complaining about an ad that believes you can be a better person. (Ha! You'll show them!) This ad is doing good just the same by inspiring all the bullies and misogynists to out themselves.
You mean a commercial that teaches a lesson and be thought provoking? God forbid! I am proud of Gillette for taking this risk. And who cares why they did it? Instead of analyzing it to death, understand the message and it's up to you if you think you need to make changes. Men are not a stereotype - they are human.
Exactly. And for the people saying it makes no difference, Cheerios took a hell of a lot of sh*t for featuring a bi-racial couple in a tv commercial, but they didn't back down, and now advertising is *vastly* more diverse than it ever was before. All it takes is one big company to say, 'we know this demographic exists, and we want to show that we would be happy to have them as customers.'
Load More Replies...As someone working daily with boys growing up with absent fathers and absent positive male role models I am sure that if you get this upset about the basic message, it is because it is striking a nerve. It is because "boys will be boys" that our society is in the trouble it is. It is time we stop getting angry and start getting serious about the example we are setting and the legacy we are leaving!
Thank you for being an ally. If I'm not mistaken you're a man, a good man. It's a fortunate thing for society that you work with boys. As you know they need good role models, and they won't always find them at home. Thank you for all of the lives you'll make better now, and in the future.
Load More Replies...The ironic thing about Gillette is that they were caught exploiting slave and child labour, and now they're trying to lecture people on morals.
Well maybe they think *they* can do better too. (Imagine that...)
Load More Replies...I work in a male dominated business and I am the only woman at my firm. My bosses are excellent and the majority of my co-workers too, but there is one man who is very toxic. As a complete narcissist he constantly tries to intimidate me, belittles me, and sometimes (more and more often lately) he has become verbally abusive. The latter escalated after I turned him down when he wanted to have dinner with me. I do not generally bother with him, we work different hours but technically I am his boss. I've tried to deal with him about work stuff which is a must, but it often ends with either one of us saying something nasty and I always end up crying or wasting all my energy thinking of this. My bosses however are awesome and have just recently started to realize what an a*s the man in question is, so they deal with him for me. But sometimes he seeks me up and like tries to pick a fight with me. I am both strong and smart and that is probably why he "chose" me to bother.
I have not watched the ad, dunno if I will bother. it's an ad, people will take away from it what they want. I will repeat that. People will take away from it what they want.
Industry would be best served if they just served the public, no matter what their views might be. Gender identity is especially a sore issue. When you include the general population, there are relatively few who identify as transgender. The idea of joining what you see as a social movement, alienates a whole group of angry people and adds little to your business by those who believe like you do.
I heard this from the news and I saw nothing wrong with it. People nowadays just hate good people and get offend over the littlest of things. Also, history is repeating itself. They burn their nikes and jerseys just because of a slight change. They hate someone if they change their minds about something or doesn't like or prefer what they like. And if they do like it, they tell that person to back off. You just can't please people.
Dollar Shave Club just raised their subscription price this month. Maybe it's time i go back to using Gillette products again. Good message in the ad.
Dont matter to me I'm a cheapskate I use dollar general double edge blades.
Agreed, Nicole. There is nothing wrong with what they are projecting in this video. I don't see it as an add/commercial, etc. People today just look for something negative in everything. I believe it's everyone's place to talk to people if their behavior is wrong/aggressive/abusive. Don't you? I saw a lot of positive in this video. No matter where it came from.
That is a great ad so I should be shocked that so many people are "offended" by this, but actually I've been on the internet for a while now so I've seen crazier things happen. Sad, but true.
Honestly, who gets this upset over a commercial? It's a COMMERCIAL? People need to get some perspective.
Yup. I hate the modern feminist movement with a passion, but if Gillette wants to do this to advertise their company, who cares? It's a corporate ad. They used that horrible POS girl from TYT (who is as "toxic" as anybody she virtue signals against) so I say "No way, Gillette", but that just means I won't buy Gillette, but they can make whatever commercial they want. I'm not going to lose sleep over it, that's for damn sure.
Load More Replies...I love that ad... why so much hate on something that spreads positivity?
The only reason some people get offended by the add is because it touches on something in themselves they are afraid to look at. The fact that it got so many dislikes is an indication that society has a lot of healing to do.
I watched it and was so confused because I couldn't find anything wrong with it. I was actually super impressed that they were talking about something that needed to be talked about...
The comments section really didn't disappoint today, exactly what i thought they would be.
Though I didn't felt personally offended by this Gillette ad, I can see why so many people are. Obviously there's nothing wrong with the messages themselves that Gillette is putting forth (with the exception of roughhousing being bad - that seems misguided) - don't bully, don't (sexually) assault people, be kind to each other, etc. The problem is that it's focusing on a specific gender instead of making the message about people in general, i. e., it's not "be a good person" but be "a good male" as if those bad behaviors were somehow inherently male (below the Youtube video Gillette even states: "Bullying. Harassment. Is this the best a man can get?", thus generalizing men as bullies and harassers). If the ad would've been about both males and females doing bad things and then encouraging people to unite and help each other, this would have been a much better social ad.
A) Their historic advertisement was "The best a man can get." This is a modern updating of that slogan. B) Women don't have so much of a problem actually being kind and expressing emotion. It's been inculcated in them for millennia. Nobody's saying they can't behave badly, but society already judges them for any "aberrant" behavior. Toxic masculinity doesn't just hurt other people; it hurts the men, themselves, who feel trapped in a certain stereotype by other men and by outdated societal messages about masculinity. Having a major company come out and say, 'it's not "wussy" to be a good guy; it's who we all should be,' sends a message that 'you are not alone in wanting more out of yourself and your life.' Even if a boy or man doesn't see this message in his immediate community, it's a good thing for him to see that there *are* many, many others in the world who will applaud him for being the good guy, not deride him for it.
Load More Replies...Two reasons why i haven't used Gillette in years, 1.i shaved with a razor of theirs and was unable to automatically fly a fighter jet, 2. (the real reason) the company that owns them still tests on animals, the barbaric scumbags. This ad is a piece of s**t too but i couldn't care less about it.
Wow okay so..... people (mostly men) are pissed off about this commercial because it wasn’t afraid to say that it is NOT okay to be a misogynistic asshat and to be kind to others and to be held accountable for your actions. And people are MAD about that??? Good grief, I shouldn’t have to be unsurprised but sadly I am. Just another example of how the world truly values women as less than human.
Most of the people who use that term are macho d******d jocks. They certainly are not incels. You kidding me? Especially in highschool. Those guys always (for god knows what reason) never had a problem finding a drunk chick to bone. Just because you don't like someone, doesn't mean they are whatever trendy term is going around right now.
Load More Replies...Nobody is throwing away their Gillette, those things are damn expensive. Every man offended by this add are just a little angry because they have no balls to shave. Get a f*****g life
i dont get the part not good messages should come from bad places, a good message is always a good message and should always be welcomed. nobody said go buy more gillette now, just that a strong voice like a big company can have more impact, i mean im from greece havent seen the ad on tv and yet here i am. message received.
people seem to forget that girls bullied girls too. it's not an exclusivity of men. can we just focus of being good people regardless of our sex? is that so complicated?
We rarely murder and rape people. Accept reality and move on.
Load More Replies...I don't know how to feel about this. I admire the message, but I don't see what the message has to do with their product. It feels like they're taking a good message and trying to use it expecting that we'll associate their brand with progression. However whether you agree with the message or not or associate the message with the product... it certainly got people talking.
The issue with this ad isn't the fact that it's telling men to be better, it's the constant generalization of men and the fact that it in its self is a product of toxic feminism. Boys are allowed to play rough, the only people I hear "boy will be boys" from are actually females, and so what I a man swoops in to save you from embarrassment (What i think she meant). It's senseless propaganda telling young boys that they can't do what they find fun and telling little girls, that they are angels and men need to do better.
I tried to stand up for someone when I was 24 and ended up spending two months in the hospital and losing my job after getting beat up. Combined with the anti-male feminists I'll never step between two people fighting again.
If the kinds of people getting their feathers ruffled by this ad are like Trump, James Woods and Piers Morgan, I'd say that Gilette is doing it right. It's only an advert, it won't last, and yes it's about making money, but it's also appealing to a certain demographic. Sexist mysoginists can go and find another brand to shave with.
I like the ad. I think it is great that a corporation that makes mens' products put it out there. There is nothing "radically feminist" about it. In fact, the content upholds very biblical values about how to treat other people. The truth is that human decency is not a left vs right issue--but our culture has deteriorated so far in the last 70 years that people cannot understand an ethics discussion without bringing partisan politics into it. Human beings act humanely toward others. "Judge not, lest thou be judged."
Regardless of content, it's a commercial to sell a product. Corporations will say literally anything to garner revenue. Posts like this are free publicity.
It isn't offensive. Must be pride again. Masculinity isn't measured with a loud screaming bully, punching the different one, or insinuating "machoness" by being rude to women. Real men take charge quickly. Real men are peacemakers and fair. Real men do not take advantage of women and children. I see nothing wrong with this AD.
I am an 80 yo woman with multiple degrees earned in two types of universities, one had just recently become integrated and admitted women and the other two had women and men students. In all three universities the areas of hard science had very few women compared to men. While we studied as hard as the men and made just the same grades, it was clear they really liked us because we used our brains to solve the problems presented to us by our professors. Others liked us because they had never seen or known women like us and they like the fact that we were approachable, fun to be with but did not respond sexually them. It wasn't that they weren't handsome and very attractive because they certainly were. It just wasn't appropriate in that setting and we knew that. They were gentlemen, funny, kind and so astute. It is my observation women today in and out of academia are provocative using sex to achieve an academic end and emotional to a degree that is unwarranted.
You are to be applauded for the progress that you've made in your life, but you should also understand by now that not everyone's experiences are the same. I've worked in science and tech for 20 years now and those guys are *far* less likely to be the same sort of toxic as men in other areas of life. (Scientists in general are far less sexual and emotional -- as you, yourself, illustrate.) My father's generation of men (he's 89) is also more likely overall to be superficially "gentlemanly" than later generations. But they also sweep a lot under the carpet and refuse to look truth in the eye. It's not that women weren't just as abused in generations past: society simply pretended it didn't exist. I don't think it's right to blame women for wanting everything out in the open so they can't be abused behind closed doors, and for the blame to be placed where it belongs: on the abusers.
Load More Replies...I bet some of them had to go out and buy new Gillette stuff to throw away for their photos.
I know guys who say things like #metoo has gone too far, even though nearly all the guys who have been caught up have been way off-base. ("Nearly" because I'm undecided about Aziz Ansari) Don't know why anyone talks like that and I assume it's the same guys complaining about this ad.
It can really be hard for people when you turn the mirror around and ask them to 'judge' themselves, challenge themselves to be more than what they know. Usually that effort to foster personal growth is met with negativity. Only strong/courageous individuals can view the challenge to look inward, not as a threat or an attack, but a opportunity to become better than we were yesterday. I believe that's what this add is designed to do. The delta between like and dislikes shows me that there is still A LOT of work that we as men need to do to ensure that the types of negative behaviors portrayed in the add are not passed on to the next generation. This is a huge responsibility, one that will scare many men away. I have lived with this monkey on my back and I know how it feels. I will try my best to ensure my boys never know that monkey.
I've had a beard for the last 7 years and typically use the cheap disposables for shaving my necks and cheeks, but I think I will buy Gillette now!
make them lose millions in business and they will change quickly. it is about money, NOT metoo movement. MONEY makes a business stay in business
Funny af, they've already given thier money to the company and if it's anything like the Nike saga they'll be back in a few weeks.... Probably when the shaving gel runs out.
I completely support the commercial and agree to everything stated, maybe a bit too dramatic for a razor but still absolutely nothing to disagree with. I can't believe people are against this...wow.
i am offended by this ad as a feminist how dare u portray violence and bullying as a Man's thing, women can beat people up too! women shave too Gillette!
i am offended by this ad as a feminist how dare u portray violence and bullying as a Man's thing, women can beat people up too! women shave too Gillette! (jk incase someone goes ballistic on me)
If anyone I know find the ad offensive.... Than I might have to ditch them!
Using the word "some" implies that only the select few/minority of men are "real" men... The TRUTH is that the majority of men in America (and in most civilized societies) ARE good/ real men, who do not abuse or condone the abuse of women, children, the weak or vulnerable. This new world view of men and masculinity being "toxic" has become a common theme as of late and THAT is what is not only UNTRUE but offensive, denigrating, sexist, hateful and harmful.
Here is the biggest problem with the add: The add was definitely targeting the Millennial in hopes that they will increase sales since companies like Dollar Shave have taken a huge amount of their market. What does that mean? Gillette didn't care about anyone's feelings really, which perhaps may make all of us wonder if they really care about their customers or are just trying to sell products. THIS COMMERCIAL WAS A MARKETING STRATEGY BECAUSE THEY WANT TO SURVIVE SINCE THEY ARE DYING. At the end of the day, they don't care about any movements. Right now, the biggest "SOCIAL MEDIA MOVEMENT" is the 3rd Wave of Feminists' war against men. And because you can buy anything online that you can at a store, this was the marketing strategy they have taken in hopes to increase sales online. THEY ABSOLUTELY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS OR MINE about the add. All they wanted was sales to make up for their almost 30% downfall in the market place. WE ALL GOT PLAYED.
I am absolutely terrified by the hate this ad is getting. It is encouraging young boys to be the best that they can be. If you looked at the Youtube comments some people have said to let "boys wrestle." I am glad the Gillete is not apologizing as they have done nothing wrong.
People should simply be nicer. An impossible reality. Why target men? Women can be bitches & bullies also. So yes, this is a sickening marketing ploy
F*****g hell. If this is the reaction a standard commercial's release gets, this year's selection aired during the Superbowl will wipe out more of the universe than Thanos did.
I don't think Gillette will care if people throw out their products which they've already paid for.
Only Proctor & Gamble could alter the time-honored scent of Old Spice, and then market the adulterated new scent as "Old Spice Classic" and "Old Spice Original." (Yes -- they did. Proctor and Gamble killed Old Spice, and then lied about it.) Some bullies are very bad, but really -- aren't liars bad? (Maybe lying is okay if you are not a bully -- especially if the deception makes you money!) You go, P&G! You wag your guilt-ridden hypocritical finger at people you disapprove of!
Only Proctor & Gamble would alter the time-honored Old Spice scent, and then market the fraudulent version as "Old Spice Classic" and "Old Spice Original." (Yes -- they did. Old Spice is dead. Proctor and Gamble killed Old Spice -- and then lied about it.) Some bullies are very bad, but really -- are liars better?
I'm so sick of man bashing and liberal butthurt feminists telling me I'm not a good woman if I support men. There are bad men, but let's talk about this hipster liberal movement that say they embrace all people but harass and bully people who dare to have a differing opinion from theirs. F**k you, you liberal hypocrites, and f**k you Gillette. How's that for an opinion?
I feel that the men who attack the ad are the same men who are unconsciously guilty of that behavior and don't like being called out for it. In the past when women accuse them, they can brush them off, or "mansplain" why they don't understand, but I think "dad" just told them they've been doing it wrong.
I like the commercial. Anything that could possibly improve the life of a child is a good thing. If you are upset, then I take it you don’t have a child who was bullied, your sister, Mother, or girlfriend has never been harassed on a job or at school. Lucky you. The rest of the world has not been that lucky. No one has ever explained to me what gives someone the right to harass another person except for saying, because I can. That is so ridiculous!
Almost everyone posting here is completely missing the point. They are taking behaviors from a handful of supremely screwed-up individuals, saying all men share those traits, and therefore no men can be trusted and everyone has to monitor every single man every single moment. That's the sort of horrifically flawed logic Trump uses every day, but all of you are gobbling it up because it matches pre-held unsupported prejudices you already hold. THAT is why the majority of people hate this ad, because the majority of people are seeing it without your preconceived view of reality.
They just keep rephrasing colloquialisms. “Machismo” or “Machoism” has now turned into “toxic masculinity.” They will come after “man’s man” next, just wait and see. But it’s just reframing based upon shifting generational language. It’s the whole “real men wear pink” movement, “real men cry.” This commercial says, “real men have manners and respect their fellow human beings.” Relax. I grew up with two women, and no men, who would make sure that I did all the manly stuff—minus sports lol. But this commercial does not advocate taking away our BBQs, but being just as manly while being more respectful. Maybe they could have done a better job with communicating that.
600k of men and women who do NOT want this world to be a more respectful place. That´s the real face of the problem.
When common courtesy, kindness and other sensible gestures like keeping a door open for a woman is causing issues, seen as degrading, when a man noticing that a woman has an especially nice dress one day, or they come out, just having made up their hair, and it is wrong to make a kind comment following the observation, as this is now harassment or worse - sexual abuse, things has gone seriously wrong. When men are getting short of strung up for being male, and has to become more female than females to be considered acceptable, giving up their own gender identity, the society has gone to s**t. I am a man, and will not be anything else just because you say so. There are douhebags out there, but calling all men douchebags for a few being, is premier douchebaggery. Bring your PC BS on...
"They don't really care" What the f**k does that matter? They said it. That's what matters. Their motives for saying it don't matter if what they're saying is factual. It's the same thing as people get their pants in a knot about how "Big Pharma" profiting off of the medical industry is a problem. Yeah...so what??? Why does that matter towards the end result? If Gillette destroys toxic masculinity A) society gets better and B) they sell more razors to men who won't be bullied out of shaving their beards. Everybody wins, you Dropkicks (Honestly, is 'Dropkick' the best insult or what???)
Why is it that when men get offended it creates a massive uproar, but when a feminist gets offended it can be justified?
Such easily triggered snowflakes. Throw away Gillette products that you've already paid for? Yeah, that'll show 'em! The same knuckleheads who's misguided outrage destroyed their Keurig machines and Nike apparel. You can't fix stupid.
Once again the easily triggered snowflakes shoot themselves in the foot with their inflated outrage. Throw away Gillette products that you've already purchased? Yeah, that'll show 'em. Just like when their destroyed their Keurig machines and Nike apparel in misguided protest. You can't fix stupid.
I watched the video. What is the problem with this ad exactly? Sometimes people react negatively to an ad because of hearsay. Somebody they know is upset about it, and they take that person's point of view as cash without watching the ad themselves and forming their own opinion. As for Jordan Peterson, sometimes, I think he has a knee-jerk reaction when something even LOOKS like political correctness. I'm no fan of political correctness myself, but personally this strikes me as overreaction.
No idea where/how this commercial is "offensive". It spoke to issues that are real, highlighted problems in our society. I watched it three times. I am interested in the other's opinions on this. Only civil, non rageful comments please!! lol The company tried to address things that escalated awareness. If there was anything "bad" about this commercial, that claim should come from the Gillette Advertising executives that the company should have not given a rats a*s about society problems and made a more brainless sales pitch for their marketing investment. Going for the narcissistic "ME crowd" or "sex sells" target market would have been much lower fruit to pick with their campaign. They tried something different. , Ironically, when I was in my early 20's, I was in a number of various TV commercials then. Payed for college. I was in a Gillette commercial! I also read for many other shaving commercials in that time period. My agent used to tell me these were the "easy commercials" for
I'm not sure but big companies with shareholders dont do these things without reason. That reason is always money. Stop pretending corporations care. They dont, just look at the CEO and his salary and bonus. My guess is they want the hipsters to start shaving more...or stop using straight razors.
What I feel the people responding negatively to this ad fail to see, is that this is not demeaning men, but rather calling on men to hold their fellow brethren to a higher standard that empowers men & women. Respect is what makes a man a man. The people responding negative, seemed to have held on to some "catch phrases" and skewed it to mean the ad was saying to dull down the part of men that makes them unique. To those, I would ask them to watch the ad again, with those lenses as rose colored as they may be, and specifically point out how any statement in the context it was given is damaging. But they will not because they cannot. Their outrage only exists at the 10,000 foot view that is obscured from any real detail, thought or analysis.
The commenter threatening to never buy anything from Procter & Gamble is hilarious. You'd spend the next 5 years of your life just trying to figure out what's 'safe' to buy and not owned by a subsidiary
I think this is a great ad don’t find anything wrong with it sending a positive message is what a lot of people need to hear.
I find the ad offensive, only because politics has reached a saturation point. I just want my razer commercial to tell me why it shaves better, makes me smell better, sweat less or whatever is the reason to buy it. I don't need a moral lesson from my razer, deodorant when we don't even know what the individuals that run this company morals actually are anyway. Face it if you're a butthead, this commercial won't change that.
I think this a great advertisement. Don't bully others, be a kind and genuine person. Don't be an arsehole. It doesn't make you a "big man" if you are sexist, racist, a bigot, etc. A real man is strong, vulnerable, kind, compassionate, and wants the best for everyone around him.
Are you freaking serious??? People find this commercial offensive???!!! NOT the bullying or sexual harassment or inequality or abuse? Wow. Great job America.
I like the message it sends but I don't like that it was used as a product ad. I wish it came as a social advert. Also I see how first half could have brought doubled opinion. Perhaps it could have been constructed clearer? I love second half. I don't see how that could be offensive (unless someone uses "boys will be boys"/"oh I was brought up this way so I can't change" saying to as an excuse to bully others). Overall - relax, people. Not everythig you see and hear is created to offend you.
I think this is awesome. Well done Gillette! Haters out their need a reality check.
Isn't it ironic that women are now telling men how to be men? Double standards. What if men tell women how to give birth? The Misandry is getting out of hand. There should be no reason anyone born with a vagina should be telling a man how to live his life. The characteristics of a man is the reason why mankind has evolved. Without risk-taking and testicular fortitude from the males, we'd all still be living in the jungle barely evolved like our genetic cousins the Chimps and Gorillas. It's because of masculinity that humankind has survived this long, because on the male side, we're fighters. Without violence, you'd never have peace. Without masculinity, the urge to be strong, we'd already let children and wives get eaten by predators like lions, tigers, and bears a long time ago. If there was no masculinity, men would run first and leave these women and children behind to fend for themselves.

Not sure if I should like this post because I approve of Gilette's message, or dislike this post because I dislike the dislikes ... so confused.
Well. It’s good to see how many people are bothered by this. They deserve to feel that way. This is a great ad, tastefully done. Of course the gross trash won’t get it. The same ones who broke their Kurig machines and burnt their Nikes. Now normal humans can enjoy these products without being associated with any dork a*s hillbilly losers.
Thanks for being out here fighting the good fight, I see you in the comments 👍
Load More Replies...At first I was like "why would anyone be offended by this?" And then I've read the comments. If Proctor & Gamble really are the opposite of this add, then it is hippocritical and they only released it, because the topic is "hip". This would be a setback, but the add in itself is still good and will hopefully help to create a better world.
What idiot SJW betrayed stockholders? Ignorant POS shits where he eats. Moron.
I'm pretty sure all these beta boys and soy boys with extremely low testosterone, will love it. Yes, feminism is dangerous and we need to oppose it
Feminism is dangerous because it wants to make everybody equal? Calling people 'beta' is dangerous and a very clear example of toxic masculinity that leads to violence, depression, suicide etc. By the way the 'alpha' theories were debunked ages ago by scientists ;)

There is toxic feminity: Being submisive, not intelligent, dont go to school, obey men under all circupstances... The difference with toxic masculinity is that luckily we have been fighting toxic feminity for over a century...

you seriously think advertisements or society do not constantly tell women how to behave? If so, you've never seen an ad, a movie, a television show, a magazine, instagram.......
Load More Replies...Perhaps there wouldn't be so much anger toward Gillette over this ad if it didn't uniformly portray WHITE men as the bad guys.
I work in advertising. And while I have a love/hate relationship with it, what I love, is that it's able to start these kinds of conversations. Advertising and the people who work in the industry have a lot of power to do good, when they do good work. And while it may seem insincere sometimes to tack a brand onto something this serious and emotional, at least they're doing something by donating to non-profits. They're (hopefully) going to follow through. Also the internet is a pro at being offended. AT EVERYTHING.
I agree that the ad is positive and that the critics are morons, but lets not forget that they are using a social and political theme to sell a product.
There's an odd thing that #metoo engenders, a kind of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" frame. If you're upset about a multinational corp overthinking its social responsibilities, then maybe you need to work on pragmatics. Worrying about billion dollar corps missing PR goals is the least of your problems. Harry's would prefer you buy their blades, and there is a whole 'nother level there. Not quite Trump admitting that his genital-grabbing quote is reprehensible, but Gillette understands that they're selling stuff to people, to people who have ethics and morals. Give them credit for a first step.
You are misrepresenting Trump's "genital-grabbing quote" as did most people. He never insinuated in any way that you can just walk up to any lady in the supermarket and grab her junk. He was specifically talking about the girls who use their bodies to climb the social ladder. If you think these women don't exist then you are living fairytale land. He's a gazillionaire. Girls in those circles are a dime a dozen. Stop conflating it with the average girl next door.

I think noone is robbed of their boy- or manhood if they act like decent human beings which this ad is trying to communicate. It's not feminism. It's not equalism. It's not any -ism. This should just be normal...
I really think people need to man up. It's an ad for the directionless. Who let's another's morals dictate to them what they should do.? Everything in its time and place. Oh and beards are win
Seriously America? First of all, it would be great if companies could just market their products without delving into issues that are of ZERO relevance to that product. Secondly, we had better learn to develop dialogue about such issues in ways that actually make sense and serve some semblance of purpose or produce a realistic catalyst for change. Lastly, let us not forget that the world isn’t always fair and it owes us nothing. Get over it.
BoredPanda - that is not Idris Elba in the opening shot. You might want to correct your article.
If Feminists could keep a man happy by looking attractive and making a sandwich maybe they wouldn't be single, bitter, man-hating welfare moms who were touched by this commercial.
and black men stops the white one from pestering a girl.Oh, that so real and common. This ad can starts brain cancer.
You couldn't have a better endorsement than Piers Morgan. He's always wrong so just do the opposite
Just because you were treated and/or taught to behave in a certain way doesn't mean that people who come after you need to go through the same thing. You can be the one to stop the cycle of abuse and bullying. I notice a lot of people (men and women) who say about abusive situations they've experienced, "Well, it happened to me, so why not to them?" And that's crazy. The people you need to address your anger with are your abusers, if you can, not on people innocent of harming you; and you sure as hell shouldn't pass down such toxic b******t to the next generation. The way men are socialized to be be dismissive and abusive to women is wrong, bullying each other is wrong, teaching boys to behave this way is wrong, and men today can be the ones to stop it. That's all this ad is saying. Anyone who can't at least think about that needs to do some soul-searching.
Guilty dogs bark. I imagine the ones offended act the way in the commercial that they're trying to stop. Something only offends you if it applies to you anyway. Being offending afterall, is a choice.
Would women be offended if the ad was about women and things that they should do better? For instance, not to criticize others (mostly men) so much? Of course, not all (or even many) women do that, but wouldn't it be infuriating to showcase women as doing that and telling them to be better? In the same way it is infuriating to see sociopath behavior which some men exhibit and then being told not to do it. Thanks, I was just about to beat a kid, but now I won't do it :)
I doubt it. There are a few ads for soaps and stuff that speak against girls bullying each other and preach girl togetherness and support and kindness. “If it don’t apply, let it fly.” Women are more level headed than men by nature, I can’t imagine many of us being “infuriated” by a razor commercial like some men are.
Load More Replies...I think the best way way to evaluate something like this is to imagine if you made an advert with women being cranky, berating men, not being able to drive or navigate..... then see if there'd be any kind of a reaction. I personally would be offended by that, as I am by this advert.
I'm a woman and I wouldn't be offended by an ad showing women being abusive towards men, because it's something that happens in real life by that. I'm not offended by that because I'm not an abusive woman
Load More Replies...This ad choked me up. I'd suggest shortening it by cutting it in half--starting with the men acting to help other men, and ended with the shot of the boys who are watching being the men of tomorrow.
The term politically correct has become too muddled. Why is setting a good example for your children and teaching them basic human decency, basic respect for others, and basic morals a bad thing? Mankind has set up tenets for others to follow since before recorded history began: the Bible, the Quran, the Vedas, Upanishads, etc. I agree with other commenters who say that people in general are too quick to get their little fefees hurt when they're reminded that it's not okay to be a jerk and it's not okay to perpetuate stereotypical gender roles or poor behavior in children because that's how you were raised. That seems like self-justification for doing something like beating your child with a belt because your parents beat you with a belt. It wasn't right when they did it to you, but you have a choice to make a change and learn better ways by setting a better example through kindness, understanding and being a better person.
As a follow-up to this ad, Gillette will be releasing a new line of products for self-castration, and converting your penis into a vagina
Yes because being a decent human being is a way of castration? You really believe that the only way to be 'manly' is being a violent bully?
Load More Replies...Getting outraged is a hobby for some people. If not the Gillette ad, then it would have been some other "not really offensive if you calm down and think about it" topic.
Not offended, but after watching the ad I feel it's a ham fisted overproduced thing designed to just stir up people and bristle egos. Not the best approach to fix what is wrong with the world.
They aren’t trying to fix what’s wrong with the world. They are just calling some people out on their b******t.

Thanks, I was just about to beat a kid, but now I won't do it :) And most of this "bad examples" are unisex. I've seen many times that some women exhibit similar behavior (for instance patronizing as shown in the business meeting in the video), so why isn't this video also showing women? :/
For starts both men and women are criticized for their behavior all the time in ads, on tv, radio, everywhere. So making it seem like this commercial is the first one to do it is honestly just giving them way to much credit. Obviously any time one gender is called out on anything people who feel that fit into the behavior being criticized get upset. That's just life. This commercial is selecting negative behaviors exhibited more commonly by men because that is their target audience. They make their products hoping that men will buy them. All of their commercials are targeted that way, it isn't something new. Everyone has flaws and if you want to step up and you see two women in a fist fight you can go and tell them to back off. You see to women screaming at each other, tell them to talk to each other with respect. You see a woman belittling a man, take her aside and say something. The traits this commercial is talking about are unisex, and you can promote them to everyone.

Bear in mind the shame, guilt and other feelings that stop a victim of any kind of assault from coming forward right away; it does not make them a coward only a scared human. Terry Crews overcame that fear, shame or whatever else he was battling to come forward and admit what happened to him. That makes him the opposite of a coward.

Thank you for being an ally. If I'm not mistaken you're a man, a good man. It's a fortunate thing for society that you work with boys. As you know they need good role models, and they won't always find them at home. Thank you for all of the lives you'll make better now, and in the future.

Especially in highschool. people seem to forget that girls bullied girls too. it's not an exclusivity of men. can we just focus of being good people regardless of our sex? is that so complicated?

Load More Replies...I wanna see a commercial where women are portrait as money loving gold diggers bitches.Who are grumpy cause they have pms and they complain about everything and have mood swings every day.And then i wanna see the women here saying "i like this commercial,i don't see anything wrong with it".I am not triggered that much by this commercial,it is just sad to see that men are more and more portrait as idiots who cant behave themselves. There certainly are idiotic men without a doubt, but this falls under the lecturing and virtue signaling category.
There is toxic feminity: Being submisive, not intelligent, dont go to school, obey men under all circupstances... The difference with toxic masculinity is that luckily we have been fighting toxic feminity for over a century...
Load More Replies...If we cant tell women what they are supposed to be, then why its supposedly OK to tell us what we are supposed to be? I will be what I deem best for me, when I want. Im not a tool for society's "good".
you seriously think advertisements or society do not constantly tell women how to behave?
Load More Replies...First off, that's not Idris Elba. We do not all look alike. Anyone taking offense to this, should really look internally and ask themselves why. There's nothing wrong with this ad.
