2 Students Expose Crowded Hallways In A Recently Reopened School In Georgia, Get Suspended

This week, some photos exposing crowded hallways in a recently reopened school in Georgia got some students into trouble. At least two students have been allegedly suspended at North Paulding High School for sharing pictures on Twitter of their packed school. The photos show not only crowded hallways, but people not practicing social distancing and not wearing masks either.

More info: Twitter | Twitter

This week, two Twitter users shared photos of crowded hallways in a high school in Georgia

The now-viral photo posted by a Twitter user, under the username Freeyourmindkid, shows high school students crammed in hallways between classes, with the majority of them not wearing face masks. After being shared, it has since amassed more than 94k likes.

And apparently, they got suspended for violating the “student code of conduct”

“Day two at North Paulding High School,” tweeted another 15-year-old student from the school in Georgia. “It is just as bad. We were stopped because it was jammed. We are close enough to the point where I got pushed multiple to go to the second block. This is not ok. Not to mention the 10% mask rate.”

Hannah told the media that soon after posting the photo, she was called into the school’s office and was told that she had violated the student code of conduct. According to the school, Hannah broke policies of using a phone in the hallway without permission, using her phone for social media, and posting pictures of minors without consent.

On Wednesday, Freeyourmindkid tweeted that he was “informed that the student who took these pictures from inside the school has been suspended.” The same day, the Twitter user posted: “If you are a student and you see that your school isn’t enforcing social distancing and masks, then please take pictures and post them to social media. If you are scared to post under your account, then reach out to me and I will post them anonymously.”

One of the students also took a tally of how many people in her classes were wearing masks

She posted the tally on her Twitter page, too. Apparently, in every class, less than half the students wore face masks. Hannah told the media that she wore hers all day with the exception of lunch. “Not only did [the schools] open, but they have not been safe,” the student said talking to Buzzfeed news. “Many people are not following CDC guidelines because the county did not make these precautions mandatory.”

And also shared a video of a packed hallway at school

“I think my punishment’s severity was excessive, but I do understand that I violated a code of conduct policy,” Hannah told the media talking about her punishment. “We have a progressive discipline system. When disciplining me and the other student, they skipped level one and went straight to two.”

In other words, these kids got suspended for telling the truth. North Paulding High School’s administration should be ashamed of itself. Obviously, the truth is what’s against their student code of conduct. And what bs charges, breaking their “policies of using a phone in the hallway without permission, using her phone for social media, and posting pictures of minors without consent”. Like that doesn’t happen thousands of times a (normal) day in schools across the country—-pictures often taken and posted by administration staff themselves.

"Got in trouble"... being suspended is probably the best thing that could have happened to them. Perhaps by the time they're "allowed" back in, cases will have spiked enough that the schools go back to remote learning...

Business as usual and thinning the herd and all that. Horrifying apathy from the administration at all levels (government and school). I guess virtual education will happen when staff is killed off. I applaud the whistleblowers.

Teachers with medically documented health issues are being required for face to face instruction. And this is the actuality of the extent of exposure they face each day. We can do better.

The kid is a whistleblower, and a hero. Of *course* the school knows that it isn't managing things right. I will point out that the schools have been under tremendous pressure to reopen, and in uber-conservative Georgia and wearing masks are tantamount to declaring your political affiliation (or that of your parents). Lets be clear, the administrators are guilty of endangering both children and public health, and they have the ability to silence the witnesses.

I see those pics and think "Epidemiological nightmare in progress". I get it. Parents need to work, kids need to be educated... But this? Dead people walking. If not the teens, the school staff, their parents, their neighbors, the bus drivers... And the long-term effects of having Covid-19 raen't known b/c, duh, we've not had it in humans for even a year yet. Long-term effects could be devastating. ... Do I try to fight for life, or do I just decide humanity wants to go extinct and hide?... *sigh*

You are right. Typically, using a phone in school is not a suspension worthy act. In normal circumstances, the student would be warned or at worst, the phone confiscated until a parent could come and claim it. Extreme offences such as pornography, terrorist threats, or bullying would be exceptions. A picture of students transitioning in the hallway with no faces shown is not.

I may get negatives for this, but all I can think of is “slaughterhouse.” Death *will* occur because these kids were forced into this when there has been no meaningful lowering of contamination/death rates, if at all. There is no way they can maintain hand hygiene, safe distancing, surface safety - this is criminal. How much learning will really be possible? Are these kids stripping and showering in a garage before they go in their houses like doctors do - before coming in contact with family? They poor kids - I want to cry. I wish they would ALL go on strike. All students, all schools. Whoever decided to make schools open and require in person attendance should be sued. We need a stay home period for a month. Go out only for food/meds with masks. It works. Then have school go from Nov to June if people are smart enough to make the sacrifice so we beat this down. I’m furious.

Educator here. You shouldn't be surprised, we tried to tell everyone this was a bad a idea and why. We were accused of being lazy and selfish. Thank God for those students, a teacher could not have posted or had them posted with out repercussion. Those students did the right thing, and some of the photos went out of their way to not show students' faces, but the situation the students were in. Good for them! They are independent thinkers and can go on to do great things.

The power of social media could shut down this school as an example of what could happen if the school board doesn't get their s**t together. This is nothing les than child endangerment. Kids shouldn't have to be exposed to some biological wafare for the sake of some ignorant fools confirming their delusions that "it isn't as bad as the media make it look". I do hope that parents whose kids get infected sue the school for every single penny they own.

What happens when these students get home? Do they strip, shower, “decontaminate” in the garage before the go in the house and have contact with their family? Do they wipe down their text books, backpacks, notebooks, - everything ? This is so cruel and so stupid and so wrong. A few weeks of a real stay at home that we all as an American family participate in - could change the nation dramatically. We never did it seriously. The economy is going to suffer more if we don’t do this, too. The solution is right there to be had. We just have to do it together. It will go faster than we think. Nothing is going to get better until we seriously, diligently shut down - all of us. 4 weeks. This is no environment for learning. Imagine how the younger ones feel? They may be asymptomatic, but the viral load in children is massive. What if a family member gets ill or worse? This will cause psychological stress. it’s abuse. When 1-2 teacher dies... psyches scarred long term. Horrific.

The US needs a month of stay at home - going out only for groceries/meds always with a mask. It would suck, but it works look at every other country that was as bad as we are and now are close to back to normal. Have the school year go from Nov to June. IF we can make the (short, relative to perpetual this) sacrifice, all of us - so school can be safer, less stressful, less dangerous to kids and family members. This is a disaster. Death will occur because of these schools opening without our taking down the risk. It’s simple to do, but it’s not fun and it’s inconvenient. It’s like we are walking on a broken leg without a cast. We need a cast for a month, then walk. There is no way these kids are able to practice adequate measures... like lambs to a - really that’s I see. Whoever ordered this should be sued. These kids should strike. In all schools. This is horrific. I’m so sorry,, kids in these images. This will cause long term trauma. Go home. Please.

People need to stand up, but the right way. Notice the photos that could be published nationally were the ones that did not show the students' faces. So yes, absolutely stand up, just be smart about it, think it through. If you are going to take the risk, make it have the greatest impact.

If you need a code of conduct to stop whistle-blowing, you already admit that the whistle-blowers rightfully do so. The super authority of that school should recall the suspension and award the students instead.

So tell the truth, bring attention to a public hazard and do the right thing is now unacceptable ? The parents, the Mayor of the city and the school board all need to sit down and get their priorities straight. These kids are under enough stress and now they are punished for having morals. North Paulding High School needs an honest and decent Principle !

I agree with your sentiment. The principal was the one who over turned the suspensions AND apologized. Though I do not know if the principal set it right before or after it come out nationally. Likely, these students were suspended by an assistant principal, as they usually are the ones in charge of discipline.

What is more unethical? Dang, school systems that fail to ensure a safe environment deserve to have their board of education replaced...or their state's health and education system replaced for (technically) child endangerment, unsafe workplace for the staff and teachers. Even with that suspension, the young people who stepped up with this info should be proud of doing the right thing. I hope the school is[t the on I just heard about on NPR though.

Welcome to Trumpville, population misguided, after all 'It is what it is." We can't afford to keep our future generation safe because our economy is tanking now. Keep acting as though it doesn't exist, everything will be fine if we just ignore it long enough. We will lose thousands of lives in the process. But the rest of us will be okay, except for those with permanent impairment from Covid, but that's okay, because the president says so. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN... DUMP TRUMP

Compulsory masks. Schools are therefore not safe for children or anyone in contact with children. I have friends with older parents and friends who live with there grandparents. If schools aren't given extra funding and don't give out masks that are compulsory people will die. There's no use saying kids have to go back if your not going to make it safe to. I'm scared.

That county is located near Atlanta. It is Cherokee county in Georgia. Georgia has some of the highest infection rates in the world. The governor of Georgia not only will not require masks, he has sued the officials who do make them mandatory, i.e. the mayor of Atlanta. There is your damn context. Devices can be used for research, not just commenting.

Go home. Please.

The price of doing the right thing these days.. yet more need to stand up. Call it as you see it, speak (or show) truth to power, and hold to the higest principles your principals...

People need to stand up, but the right way. Notice the photos that could be published nationally were the ones that did not show the students' faces. So yes, absolutely stand up, just be smart about it, think it through. If you are going to take the risk, make it have the greatest impact.

Whistleblowers always get treated this way. It's a scare tactic to keep others in line. Look what happen to Lt. Con. Vindman. He lost everything for whistleblowing on trump. Snowden can't leave Russia.

I'd be happy to get suspended from that petri dish of a school!

Teachers with serious and life threatening health conditions who have medical notes advising for online teaching are even being required to report face to face.

If you need a code of conduct to stop whistle-blowing, you already admit that the whistle-blowers rightfully do so. The super authority of that school should recall the suspension and award the students instead.

The principal did recall the suspension and apologized. This is Cherokee County, Georgia if you want to research further.

These kids have learned that it's not easy being a whistleblower, but it sure is worth it. These kids shouldn't be in school without mask in the first place. Well done on those students' part for telling the truth.

Suspended for telling the truth. So much for your first amendment rights! Kind of hard to blur faces when the point is to show people not wearing masks. To many schools are listening to Gov.Kemp and not the CDC. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

I want the parents of each and every student to sign a paper that they will watch their kids not take them to the hospital because they want them out of the house is bullship they can learn at home with zoom I think the parents just don't want them at home anymore they want someone else to be the babysitter so start a dam petition that way they cannot go to the hospital is they get sick because they're disregarding what is mandated by the state or at least common sense which these parents lack

Well done kids, you are helping to tell the truth to families, community and the world. I know my children would now not be attending that school, good job.

Don't people realize by now that truth had no place during the current administration, regardless of the risks or urgency.

On a different note, why is August 3 the first day o school? Does the summer break last only one month, or does it start earlier than in most European countries (we have 2 months July & August)? Is it the sam for all USA?

DUMP TRUMP

Apparently, the suspension was recinded. The entire school administration should be fired & arrested for reckless endangerment of children. The trump administration as well for threatening to withhold funding, but the ultimate blame lies with the parents.

Schools can't social distance when there isn't enough physical room. Schools can't provide enough hand sanitiser and hygienic stuff when they can't keep the loos clean. Schools won't enforce
