35 Pics Showing The Other Side Of The George Floyd Protests That The Mainstream Media Is Reluctant To Share
Protests have erupted all over the US over the death of George Floyd. Cities are imposing curfews and states are activating National Guard members to calm down the demonstrators but they continue to express pain and anger with chants, signs and outbreaks of violence.
And while many questions, like what's going to happen to the police officers involved in the incident, are still unanswered, one thing is certain: the demands for justice and an end to police brutality against African Americans have united the entire country and people of all backgrounds are taking a knee together.

Based on accounts from witnesses, video footage, and official statements, here's what the public knows about Mr. Floyd's death so far.
Everything began with a report of a fake $20 bill. A report was made on the evening of the 25th of May, when Mr. Floyd bought a pack of cigarettes from a grocery store. The store employee thought the $20 bill Mr. Floyd paid with was counterfeit and reported it to police.
Mr. Floyd had been living in Minneapolis for several years after. He had recently been working as a bouncer but just like so many other Americans became unemployed during the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr. Floyd was a regular at Cup Foods, the grocery store where he tried to buy the cigarettes. Mike Abumayyaleh, the owner of the store, told NBC that Mr. Floyd was a friendly face and a pleasant customer who never caused any trouble. But Mr. Abumayyaleh wasn't working that day.

At around 20:08, two police officers arrived at the scene. Mr. Floyd was sitting in a car parked around the corner with two other people.
After approaching them, one of the officers, Thomas Lane, pulled out his gun and ordered Mr. Floyd to show his hands. In an account of the incident, prosecutors didn't explain why Mr. Lane thought it necessary to draw his gun.
According to the prosecutors, Mr. Lane "put his hands on Mr. Floyd, and pulled him out of the car". Then Mr. Floyd began actively resisting handcuffs.

Once handcuffed, however, Mr. Floyd became compliant and Mr. Lane explained that he was being arrested for "passing counterfeit currency".
But when officers tried to put Mr. Floyd in their squad car, a struggle erupted.
At around 20:14, Mr. Floyd "stiffened up, fell to the ground, and told the officers he was claustrophobic", a transcript released by authorities explained.
Mr. Chauvin arrived at the scene. He and other officers were involved in further attempts to get Mr. Floyd in the police car.
It’s Not White vs. Black, Rich vs. Poor, Police vs. Citizens....it’s Everyone vs. Racists
At 20:19, Mr. Chauvin pulled Mr. Floyd out of the passenger side, causing the man to fall to the ground.
As he lay there, face down, still in handcuffs, witnesses started to film Mr. Floyd. He appeared to be in a distressed state. These moments, captured on multiple mobile phones and shared widely on social media, were Mr. Floyd's last.
As officers were restraining Mr. Floyd, Mr. Chauvin placed his left knee between his head and neck.
"I can't breathe," Mr. Floyd said repeated, pleading for his mother and begging "please, please, please".
Mr. Chauvin kept his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

About 6 minutes into that period, Mr. Floyd became non-responsive. It was approximately then when Mr. Floyd fell silent and bystanders urged the officers to check his pulse.
One of the other officers, JA Kueng, did exactly that and said he "couldn't find one". But the officers did not move.
At 20:27, Mr. Chauvin removed his knee from Mr. Floyd's neck. He was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center in an ambulance and was pronounced dead around an hour later.
From The Raleigh Protest
On Friday, Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman charged Mr. Chauvin with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. His bail has been set at $500,000.
Mr. Floyd's family and their attorney, Benjamin Crump, are upset that Mr. Chauvin wasn't charged with a more serious offense.
"We expected a first-degree murder charge. We want a first-degree murder charge. And we want to see the other officers arrested," Crump and the family said in a statement. "We call on authorities to revise the charges to reflect the true culpability of this officer."
If convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, Mr. Chauvin would be facing up to 25 years in prison on the first charge and up to 10 years on the second.
Mr. Freeman said charges against the other three officers are likely.

Now, after tens of thousands of people flooded the streets across the United States, after buildings were set on fire and businesses were looted, President Trump has criticized the unrest, and Attorney General William P. Barr warned people that contributing to the destruction could make them face federal charges. Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota said the people who are defying curfews and trying to instigate police were no longer protesting police brutality, but rather seeking to exploit Mr. Floyd’s death for their own political motives.

I saw these images circulating on social media earlier this morning and they are truly moving. These are the images that the news rarely shows us and likely doesn't want us to see. I will never ever be able to understand the level of sadness, anger, hurt, and frustration felt by the black community, but I'm so happy to see images like these of communities of all skin tones, sexual orientations, ages, and religions band together to foster change.

Honest question: obviously all people, black and white, are most likely aware of this right now. Is it encouraging or annoying of me, as a white woman, to say something supportive to any black person I encounter? I don't want to bother someone in the middle of a store or "single them out" for being black, but I also don't want to ignore the situation.

I have no issue with people protesting but I do have a problem with the riots. The riots are just an excuse for thugs to get away with looting, assault, arson etc. By all means make a stand and support the cause but destroying innocent by standers, businesses, homes, lives etc is not the way to go. It also doesn’t help support the cause with all the violence and criminal activities. On another note, the law enforcement need to be held more accountable. I have heard too many incidences where innocent people of colour have been treated shockingly by authority and society in general. Too often they get away with it and enough is enough. Black lives matter.
Yeah violent protests are counter productive. Those looters aren't there to protest, they are using it as an excuse to loot.
Bad people are going to take any opportunity to be bad.
Would you forgive them if they were black? Because they just want to hang all the whites.
Are they though? Systemic racism has existed for as long as America has. Peaceful protesting has proven to accomplish very little. We've been peacefully protesting for 450, but black people are still getting killed in the streets. At a certain point you have to realize that no one will listen unless we make ourselves heard. As Kimberly Jones put it, quite heartbreakingly "we should count ourselves lucky black people are asking for equality, not revenge." Please watch this video. It says more than I ever could. https://youtu.be/sb9_qGOa9Go
There have been a lot of videos showing that many of the people instigating the violence aren't protesters, but instead saboteurs. I live 90 miles from Minneapolis, so this is all really close to home for me, but thankfully where I live it's been very peaceful.
And the innocent people think that the gathering is for poor Floyd when is only for the loot. In your face, America.
Well, there were those Long Beach guys who found that Shipment of bricks just Sitting There outside a place that looked expensive and proletariat during the riot that night. So...
There are peaceful protesters, anarchists, and non-peaceful protesters. Non-peaceful protesters argue that peacefully protesting is not achieving their goals. They believe they make stronger points with destructive actions. It's definitely complicated.
The riots are what happens if a group of people doesn't feel heard in a longlasting frustrating situation. Not everyone in the group acts reasonably, they do feel frustrated and feel that violence is a way to reciprocate. Imagine you would be mistreated for something that's not on you and no one will listen and the world is some kafkaësk version of what feels should be right. Some people stay calm, but if the mistreatement continues, chances are you would also start to feel anger. It roots from fear for not seeing justice within an overseeable future. This dynamic happens within one person, but it can also be seen in a larger group like this. The peaceful protesters are the conscious part of how one person might act, the rioters are the part that get mad and are afraid nothing will change anyway and act out with violence. Most just follow their peers though. And it's a good thing that the frustration starts to be shared outside this group and even world wide.
Trevor Noah said that instead of asking what good does it do to loot Target, we should be asking what good it does to *not* loot Target when so many feel like society has betrayed their half of the social contract. I’m not summing it up well, it’s worth looking up to hear it directly from Trevor.
No, I'm betting it's more to sow anarchy, I mean, there is a massive goods shortage, and people are stealing jewlery and expensive electronics, while burining all the places with ready access food to the ground.
The thing is that people assume protesters and rioters are one and the same. I've seen many videos of protesters trying to get vandals, rioters, looters, and arsonists to stop, some being very brave young women. One guy came to MN from illinios with a big group and did tremendous damage. The local rioters might have had something to do with George Floyd, not that I condone it. But I will never understand how looting is related. I think the looters are the ones who don't give a s**t about the protest and just use it. The guy who started all the looting in Mpls was a white guy, calmly breaking windows in the auto-zone with a special devide. He was there to incite a riot, not protest - an agent provocateur. Some have identified him as a St. Paul cop, but I reject that until there is definite proof - could ruin that guys' life if he's innocent.
How many of you are enjoying their new horde of Covid??
@GirlFriday: that was a NONVIOLENT PROTEST! Don't compare an important event in American Independence to actual crime!
How come only Black Lives and not ALL LIVES? DIRTY BRUTAL COPS don't just kill Blacks these fucking dirtbags kill and depredate all other lives...
Of course all lives matter but this is about something bigger. Black people are 2.5% more likely to be killed by police. I am not religious and I don't know if you are or not but this is a way to look at it. There are 100 sheep, but one goes missing. Jesus leaves the 99 and goes after the one. The 99 ask "But...what about us? Don't we matter?". Of course the 99 matter, but they're not the ones in danger. The one gone is. Saying Black lives matter does not mean that other lives don't, it is about bringing awareness.
Oh Jonathan you're just a racist asshole. It's okay. You have the internet at hand. You can educate yourself.
There is a video of Trevor Noah on yt who addressed that issue. Normally, I'd completely agree with you and especially when it comes to protests against G7 in Germany or related causes where many (mostly) left-wing-fanatics simply caused destruction. Trevor Noah said, though, that if you have been feeling so suppressed for such a long time, so under-valued by the people with less colour on their skin, it might be understandable to loot a store. Watch the vid, it's quite an interesting view!
The issue is that when they continue to have violent protests and looting, they are reinforcing the very negative stereotypes that they are trying to eliminate.
so if you feel undervalued at home or at work or frustrated in general that would excuse road rage? or stealing things? or mugging? or beating old ladies? Which crimes exactly become acceptable? It's a bit of a slippery slope, isn't it?
Agreed, Marlowe! I just mentioned Trevor above before I saw your comment. It’s worthwhile to find the clip because he was so eloquent.
All lives matter, color does not!
Of course all lives matter but this is about something bigger. If one house catches fire, do you go dousing fire in every house in the neighborhood cause they all matter??? No. You just go douse fire in the house that actually has it. The same way, all lives do matter, but when black lives are getting killed, you have to worry about black lives. You guys really feel threatened over black lives getting equal treatment huh ?
I'm not religious, however I see your point and agree with it. I just hope it is a common understanding. If one house catches fire then I'll defend all houses, so that fire not to spread to them and the color of the house does not matter. Why do you think that the yellow house is more important than a green one? It's all about equal treatment of all the houses, or you do not see that a green house belongs to all houses? It's not the special one, not more, not less worth than other ones, all houses matter the same!
Yup. Here in Georgia, gangs are taking advantage of the fact that the police are concentrated on the riots. It's gotten so bad, the mayor ordered a curfew be placed in first Downtown Atlanta, then Atlanta.
Most generic opinion ever
instead of saying "its terrible that an innocent black person was killed but the destroying of property needs to stop" try "its horrible that an property is being destroyed, but killing innocent black people needs to stop" you're focused on the wrong thing
Switch those two round and we see your true priorities...
What do you mean switch those two around?
I think the riots are an unfortunate necessity of this. Walking in the streets to demonstrate is a great way of voicing oppinion. But this stupid "protection" of police that are clearly motivated by racism in their actions against everyday citizens of color, has been going on for WAY to long now. Protests end, and fade away, and eventually get forgotten by too many. The "officers" who commited the crime, get off with just minor charges. Ref. Amadou Diallo. I absolutely agree that looters are scum, and use this as an excuse, but this is a very very small percentage of the whole issue, and both Trump and the media are focusing on these. I do not condone it, but burning down the police station seems like a nessecary step to make justice happen NOW. Everyone knows WHO killed George. Everybody knows that he MURDERED him. Put him on death row NOW... These police love to exert their power... Let them feel that power put back on to them. Put Tony on death row. today... regards from Norway.

The protests were ALWAYS peaceful until the police came along and started violence. If you still side with the police you don't give a fuck about black people
Um, no. In all the media shown, as soon as crefew happens, and all the nice people go home, the RIOTS happen and places are burned and looted while masked thugs run around. The peaceful protesters don't intentionally wear masks.

What about the Boston Tea Party? That did some good, didn't it?
I am doubtful that any of these actions will have a lasting effect. Alas. As the scholars say, racism in the US is institutionalised. It starts with small things. One example: whenever I take a survey that had been designed in the US, I stumble across "name your race: Caucasian, African Asian". Drop that shit! Race theories are disproven for decades, we are all humans.
Admittedly, I can only go by the surveys that I've seen in the UK but I do think they can serve a purpose. For example, the NHS uses ethnic monitoring surveys. Helps to ensure that the NHS is meeting the needs of all ethnic groups. For example if X% of the population is of X ethnicity - is a similar percentage making use of the services available? If not then it can be explored to see if they are unaware or unable to access the services and why. Or knowing how many people will speak a particular language and making sure that there is accessible information and staff who can talk to them. These aren't about preventing racism or making it worse but about ensuring people's needs are met.
Carrie de Luka - yes to that! I nearly wrote what you said, too, but thought maybe Hans was actually concerned about the word "race". I know in English it's also called "the human race" and therefor, the negative connotation it carries in Germany, for example, isn't as powerful. Despite that, I sometimes feel quite uncomfortable reading the label "race".
The surveys I have had to complete in the UK were Equality Monitoring Forms and have always been anonymous but then I have always worked in the public or charity sector where they have to comply with the Equality Act 2010 and public sector equality duty. The public sector equality duty means public authorities and charitable organisations must think about whether they should take action to meet the needs of a protected characteristic (sex, gender, race and so forth) or reduce the inequalities. In doing this, public authorities and charities are allowed to treat some groups more favourably than others. If they don't have the surveys, they can't monitor if they are actually doing the work to improve equality or not. Private companies don't have to comply.
Astrid Nineor - a commercial company may still have good reasons for wanting to undertake equality monitoring. If a company doesn't evaluate the diversity of their employees how can they do anything to improve it - should it be necessary. As long as it is anonymous and voluntary then it is unlikely to be for nefarious reasons. If it isn't anonymous and voluntary then I'm not very sure I'd want to work for the company!
That is different from being asked your race before getting to sign a contract for a commercial company though
We all need to put our differences aside and be one. It doesn’t matter of our skintone, it matters what and how we act. So be kind and let’s just show the world what we are made of. We are not going to be racists, we are going to be kind. This is America, after all!!!!

Unfortunately, it's still important. If we don't track things like race and gender - things that we would love to become unimportant over time - then we can't know whether or not it's getting better. We still need to see whether things like unemployment, education, wages, prison sentences, etc etc break down across racial lines. I work at a university and we were recently overhauling our enrollment system, and we very nearly removed gender as a question on the form. Then we realized that without that information, we can't ask questions such as whether there is a high percentage of men in STEM or women in Nursing, data which informs recruiting and hopefully helps to erase cultural bias in the long run. So we just made sure it was clear that we were asking about which gender you identify with, and gave nonbinary as an option. Unfortunately, until race and gender really DON'T matter, we can't possibly stop asking about them without being part of the problem.
These actions will have effects, but you're right in saying they won't be lasting. The fight for justice and equality is never-ending. There's no 'we won' moment, no victory march. You have to get up every day and keep fighting, because even though this fight can't be 'won', it can certainly be lost. Race is an artificial construct; all humans are brown, and we all bleed red. Any other judgement is simply bigotry. Keep fighting, and even if all you ever do is change one mind... well, that's one less bigot in the world, and that's a win.
Racism and hatred will never be 100% gone. But things could change. LGBTQ rights have changed and that started with protests and riots. Interracial marriage is allowed. Black people and women are allowed to vote. So we KNOW things can change - why not this?
But that's the thing, it's so much bigger than just cop violence, but there is this growing awareness of us, the rest of the world, that that is what's wrong! So even if this just preps the world for feeling free to judge the heck out of it, it has done good work. It's just unimaginable that a person needs to die for this to get moving.
You forgot one thing. All 4 officers present for the killing were immediately fired, one was charged with murder, and more charges will be coming after the investigation. Before, the cops would either get a slap on the wrist, or congratulations for what they did. That is definite progress in a good direction.
We have to change the hearts and minds of American PEOPLE. All the rest of that is window dressing. It's a process. It will take time.
I agree and disagree. Because there are health problems that affect more some races or ethnicities than others (same with sex). But since racism still haunts us, maybe the word "race" in health studies should be renamed...? Idk the answer
Do the survey forms in the US use 'race'? I only know the UK ones and the ones I have seen use the term ethnicities. There is a best practice sample form by ACAS (the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) on the internet for information. It can be downloaded for companies to use.
IKR! You would expect something better from a country made by immigrants and that has a history of killing the Natives and using slavery. As you say correctly, we are all humans and should treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves.
The problem is that until racism is defeated, no one will be able to measure its impact without those questions. It would be akin to ignoring it and that won't make it go away either.
A lot of people of a certain political persuasion like to say that they are color blind just so that we *will* ignore the problem.
I agree, however, from a medical standpoint it does make a difference. Certain diseases are more prevalent in certain groups. We actually use different “normal” values in some lab tests and even Lung function tests for Blacks, Whites, and Asians.
the NHS needs the ethnicity of their patients because certain conditions have a higher risk among certain races. Plus with the African Diaspora there is an ongoing issue of poor mental health because of culture. This is backed by research if anyone wants to flame me over it. Ive reviewed a dissertation( by a black south african) in May this year who researched this and proposed a solution to remove cultural stigma barriers..
The name your race surveys in the US are designed to identify when discrimination may be happening, or as Carrie said, to see if a given service is not reaching a specific community.
When I fill out the paperwork to enroll my kids for school, it asks what race? I always cross out that question and print. “Why does it matter?”
Or in the news describing the person by the color of their skin
Skin colour seems to still be a statistically significant factor - which is the other point of all these protests. As long as asking skin colour is legal and surveys need to be effective, they'll keep asking that. Only way to overcome racism is to ignore it to death. Paradoxically enough.
You can't ignore it to death if a large part of society has no opinion or stands with it. Because then a majority will just keep at it, most of them no clue what the impact is.

I agree with you, but I keep asking and no one has answered, what proof that George Floyd's death was due to racism? The Amy Cooper Central Park thing was definitely racism at work. She did the female equivalent of trying to beat him up. Of course there is racism, but you can't blame racism for any bad thing without some proof. If we've shifted away from the murder of George Floyd to racism, then we're losing focus. We don't know that Chauvin wasn't just a straight up sociopath - not to say a person can't be both a racist and a sociopath. I was reading today, and so far, nobody has really been able to prove that killings of black men by police are racially motivated. There just isn't enough data. For example, in a low-income neighborhood with lots of white people, many more white people wil be shot by police than black people. Of course cops in one city might be much more racist than in another due to culture.

Please recognise white privilege. The police literally point their gun downwards when they see white people in front.
There is enough data. Even in a city with more poor white people, black people are killed at a higher rate. In the 100 largest US cities, black people were 38% of people killed by these 100 police departments despite being only 21% of the population in their jurisdictions. 47% of unarmed people killed by the 100 largest city police departments were black. These police departments killed unarmed black people at a rate 4 times higher than unarmed white people. https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/cities

We've seen no evidence that George Floyd's death was related to racism. Anyone who says simply, "cop was white, dead guy is black, so must be racist" is in fact a racist cuz they don't the dead guy as human first, race second. They can't see other motive besides race. Chauvin might have simply been a sociopath. The fact that he sat there and did that while knowing he was filmed fits much more with a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder than with someone who is racist, since a racist will hide it when filmed. I know white people like to congratulate themselves on not being racist by agreeing with every message put out by BLM, but they are not always right and don't represent the thoughts, views, goals, or tactics of all black people. We will never stop this from happening if we think it's about race or only about race only. It's about police culture and many other things.
What is it about police culture that makes a black man 3x more likely to be murdered by a cop than a white man and how is that situation NOT about race?

Thanks for this. It's really hard to sort through the BS when the US media force-feeds confirmation bias.
In my experience, I have seen that there are people in every single profession that are bad at their job, but the majority are good at it. Same goes for people who protest injustice: most are going about it peacefully, but some are not. It is very important to focus on the positive here. It's imperative in order to understand and achieve change.
Yes! Exactly the argument I used with a doctor once when he was protesting that a client of mine couldn't possibly have had bad treatment by her doctor! There are crappy people in every single profession. What we need to be is better at is dealing with them properly when they show themselves - which they inevitably do! The main cop in this, Derek Chauvin, had many complaints made against him prior to this! Makes you wonder how much he's actually got away with in the past.
some professions have no room for bad apples (pilots, doctors, police officers for example)
This would have never escalated to this point if the Minnesota police had done the same as the officers shown here. Instead they fired tear gas and rubber bullets into a peaceful protest because of their own irrational fear of retaliation.
Don't forget the president fueling this by tweeting some awful racist messages.
Condemning riots is racism? trying to get Antifa, an actual terrorist movement declared as terrorists is racist? SUPPORTING THE GEORGE FLOYD CASE IS RACIST?
THE POLICE DID THIS SUPPORTIVE SHIT IN MULTIPLE STATES ONLY TO START FIRING MINUTES LATER. do not trust them. There are literally multiple videos of them pulling this shit. They're all fucking assholes
I am very worried when I see these things : There is a hidden killer among us, and it's not white, nor black. It loves a huge crowd, as there it can jump from person to person, preferably without masks, and multiply. Stay safe!!
I appreciate this post BP. So nice to see some bright spots in this mess. The news so rarely, if ever, shows this side of it.
I love this. But fuck the rioters and looters. They are only using the unrest in this time to be criminals and hurt people and their property. I can't believe that people are so selfish as to use a genuine tragedy to make the world a worse place than it already is. I really hope the police can differentiate between the peaceful protesters and the violent anarchists, because otherwise this could turn into absolute chaos.

its not horrible that an innocent black person was killed, but DESTROYING PROPERTY NEEDS TO STOP .....but rather its horrible that property is being destroyed, but KILLING INNOCENT BLACK PEOPLE has to stop.
Some of these photos show actual police officers supporting the protesters. Now, that's pleasantly surprising.
While I am deeply moved by acts of solidarity and peace during protests, I am slightly disturbed that people are disregarding social distancing. Yes, making your voice heard and standing up for the oppressed is important, but remember, we're still in the middle of a pandemic. We don't want to hurt those who have already been wrecked hard by Covid-19 even more by unintentionally spreading the disease.
I feel like this issue is so deeply partisan its impossible to get reliable reporting on it. As a conservative, I've seen videos pushed by conservative pages on Instagram or conservative news outlets showing rioters smashing vehicles, stealing weapons, and assaulting officers. But I've also seen the police brutality videos of officers attacking people and without context, its incredibly difficult in both cases to determine whose in the right and whose in the wrong.
No one is anymore, it's bigger than just seperate individuals. The system is broken though. Police brutality towards POC is an issue in the US that is backed by numbers and can be traced back to a bigger institutionalized problem. That doesn't make any particular cop the problem, it makes the system the problem and it will take a whole country to change it.
Can I ask, what is the hope for these protests? Besides spreading the word? Or is spreading the message in fact the premise? I'm genuinely asking, because I care and want to understand. I understand protesting where you want a specific decision changed, but I think I'm struggling to understand the 'outcome' of these protests. The police going to jail that murdered George? I hope I'm explaining my question well. I mean, racism won't disappear overnight (unfortunately) so like what would people want exactly to end the protests? Just a generalized movement to end racism? I hope I am not offending anyone by asking. I want to understand and learn more about this, and would genuinely love to talk about it.
Fair questions. On an overarching basis I suppose I think about what would the likely outcome be if there were no protests. Would there be any possibility of true justice or would the killers quietly get away with their actions? With the world's attention on you it is much harder to get away with things. How do you campaign for change - and change is clearly needed - without protests? It is all too easy to ignore people unless you make it impossible for them to do so. On a specific basis? Lock up the men responsible and with Derek Chauvin in particular leave him locked up. Bring in tougher consequences for racism. Ensure that every incident of police brutality is properly investigated and stop all the cover ups. Hope that makes sense - I've only had one hour's sleep!!
Liam, I couldn't agree with you more. In the past these situations have gotten covered up, but by the citizens rising up and saying "No more" consequences will be handed out this time. That did make sense and I hope you get some rest.
In my opinion, for some people the protests are about spreading the word and sending a message. However, the ones that are looting and destroying property are doing nothing more than being a menace. The ones who are being peaceful are just sick and tired of this issue and are showing that they have had enough. Your question was a very good question and I hope I gave you an answer.
Amen!!
There was looting after the floods, the hurricanes so you can’t blame the looting on racism. Some people will always jump on an opportunity to steal.
Love doesn’t have a color
I love the photos, but take issue with captions like "the Media won't let you see this" and "Protests That The Mainstream Media Is Reluctant To Share". That is total bullshit. The only "mainstream media" NOT showing photos like this is FOX NEWS. Every other mainstream media outlet is showing pictures like this. For Christ's sake GET IT RIGHT.
I agree, only in the sense that the choice of this language/captions is just furthering divisiveness
Great photos but PLEASE stop feeding into the narrative of the media as our enemy. Because of 45, the media, which is an essential part of our democracy, is being targeted at these protests. Journalists are being shot in the head and throat with rubber bullets in uncounted numbers, even on air; are being arrested and targeted for tear bas and flash bang grenades. They are out there helping to keep us functioning as a free country. It's lazy and too easy to say "the media" isn't doing their job. In 1841, Thomas Carlyle wrote, “Burke said there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters’ Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important far than they all”
Even a simple reverse image search of the first photo shows you the dozens of media outlets that have shared the image. These are all fantastic stories - but most people are hearing about them from ... get this ... the media.
Many of these photos are surely from "mainstream media" photojournalists. This notion of the "mainstream media" being reluctant to showcase these stories is ridiculous at best. Stop making journalism the scapegoat.
Powerful and comforting pics indeed, but why this intimation they might be held from us by the maisntream media? They have been widely relayed already in the pess, on Tv and on social media.... Sowing doubt as to the reliability and impartiality of the press is a populist thing to do
The key element in all these posts is SOLIDARITY. Regardless if racism in the US is systemic or not, we all need to work together to eradicate it, everywhere. (Agree that those opportunists who decide to behave criminally-thieving and destroying property- after such a tragedy should be condemned- their actions are not hurting 'the system' but rather fellow citizens).
EVERYBODY UPVOTE THIS SO IT CAN TREND AND EVERYBODY WILL SEE IT!!!
Not this comment, the post itself
I can't recall any other BP article where in so many cases the top vote is voted to oblivion. The top comment is hidden in at least a dozen pics, as of this time :D
Because shart was out in full force today.
The beauty of these photos have me in tears
I can't speak for other towns and cities but the coverage here in Los Angeles County has been extensive, both the good and the bad. So I was aware of the clean up efforts by protestors and how some protected businesses.
Such a shame that some agitators felt the need to riot and loot - it had the potential to totally destroy this demonstartion which has become almost global. Amazing how the dispicable actions of one man has had such an impact. Let's hope good comes out of it.
There is no problem with protesting! Anyone can do it. The problem with this is that there are people who think it is a chance to cause mayhem. I live in Washington and I heard this story about these white girls tagging a Starbucks. This elderly black lady comes up and asks why they are doing this. "They will just blame us!" She said, shocked that these self-righteous jerks were doing something so evil. They just ignored her and finished the job, walking away when they were done. Don't. It's not ok to take advantage of this.
How about demonstrating for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of all cops using excessive force. That would probably have a more lasting effect.
It's hard to accept the fact that this is still an issue and, most likely, will be an issue hundred years from now...
I agree with Peaceful Protests are good. Not so much for looting and violence. Black lives matter, and awareness of being kind to others. Remember George Floyd by being kind to other people. I feel the World is heading to a recession, and there is still some trouble re COVID 19. You all need to forgive, stick together, show care and appreciation. You might need each other in the future. World affairs are changing rapidly, and you need to restore America. I hope they pass a law in Parliament against Police Brutality. Please finish with the protests being peaceful and heard. Stop riots. George wanted Love and Kindness. The Family are still stressed, so bring about some Calm. I pray for you.
Great story Thanks
No one is expecting this will change everything instantaneously and completely. But, if we don't speak out against injustice, always, everytime we see it, we lose the opportunity to make even incremental changes. "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness".
In 1968 the Kerner Commission was appointed to look into the causes of that summer's riots (the worst before these days). They got it right- systemic racism and discrimination that kept people trapped in poverty. The report deplored a common reaction to riots: arming police officers with more deadly weapons to use in heavily populated urban neighborhoods. Its primary recommendation was “a policy which combines ghetto enrichment with programs designed to encourage integration of substantial numbers of Negroes into the society outside the ghetto.” Nobody listened. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/1968-kerner-commission-got-it-right-nobody-listened-180968318/
The government (trump, et al) is purposely instigating, creating, and focusing on the violence in order to divide and distract us.
The actual protesters should join with the cops in beating the cr*p out of the looters. That would make everyone happy (except the looters, but f*ck them)
I woulod like to think that such huge demonstrations across the country and in fact, Europe, should usher in an environment that is both safe and peaceful
Wow, the Trump trolls are out in force today 🖕
Why is nobody commenting on how close everybody is? Maybe this is just because I come from a country with the highest mortality due to COVID.
Well done to the people doing the good things during the bad times. I have no issue with people protesting, what i have an issue with, is the people that start rioting and looting which is absolutely unnecessary
My tears could not stop while I was reading. Do you have a Chinese version of this article? Or may I translate this page to Chinese and share?
This makes me cry happy and sad tears at the same time.
The Media, especially the U.S. media, is to blame just as much as the Establishment for the division in the American society. Of course, generational erosion of the education and inherent arrogance and brainwashing of the Americans are also one of the many reasons why the self-proclaimed "the greatest country in the world" is going to shit. Honestly, it was a long time coming.
If we show more things like this, we can help the situation.
The media is going to show what they think people will watch or want to see. Do not believe the media for all of your information. They do it for ratings because ratings equals money.
There's 2 sections to the protests, those asking for the police to be a better force and asking in a passive way and those using this time to commit crime, some of which is organised crime using it as a cover to do things they would normally have a greater chance of being caught doing.
I was so glad to see police officers supporting the protesters and walking with them. These photos also made me want to cry because of the emotional damage people are experiencing. It is heartbreaking to have to worry about oneself or one´s family being killed by a police officer solely based on your skin color. To help prevent more racist people from leading our country, during this year´s election, we need to really look into candidates and laws to help out minorities and elect people who stand with them.
Beautiful
I commented already, but I must do it again: Apparently my first comment came off as argumentative and for that I am sorry. I believe that these protests are necessary because the only way change happens is by making your voice heard. The rioting, looting, and burning is wrong and those people have no right to be doing that. This situation is about police brutality and human rights. The police kneeling shows that they have solidarity with the average person and that is awesome to see. We as a society need to focus on the people who are protesting peacefully and less on the people who are using this as an opportunity to be rowdy. At the end of the day, we need to remember a man lost his life.
So poignant. All these posts are so touching, sad and yet give us hope that one day we will succeed and that justice will be found. Justice for all those people suffering because of their colour, "race", religion, sexuality or gender. I really hope that this dream will one day be reality and that everyone can be safe.
WOW, such propaganda. Sure, you might be able to get some photos of the few cases where in the daylight their are people doing good, but how about showing the destroyed buildings, the black police dead in the streets, the businesses of both black and white people being utterly looted and their livelihoods destroyed? Where are all of these Black Lies Matter moments? Again, it is propaganda to make it look like this is what is really happening. I am not saying these are not real photos, but with over 1700 violent protests across America over George Floyd, who by the way was a horrible thug, these photos are few and an attempt to cover up the hate that keeps happening every day. For every photo you show with a police officer being guarded or hugged, a police officer has died due to these protests. Also, how ironic, people HAVE TO PROTECT AN OFFICER? Why would they HAVE to do that if it is all good and peaceful?
We can all name INDIVIDUALS who take racist actions. However, "systemic racism" presupposes rules, laws, or regulations in a "system" unjustly harming certain races. Has anyone named a rule, law, or regulation belonging to such a system?
I'm disgusted. Now you want me to let myself rob, rape or kill by anybody that's black?? This is exactly why i'm so afraid of black folks! I prefer to support any officer of ANY race that murders my attacker or that lets me to do it. Mr. Chauvin.... you got my respect, MY brother, teacher and friend. https://diaryofanegress.com/2012/12/23/21-harsh-truths-black-people-dont-want-to-hear/ this bastard hates whites for the sake of hate and has a huge superiority complex.
This would have been a lot more positive and compelling if all the passive aggressive remarks about 'the media' had been left out. Bored Panda is 'media', too, and it covered it, as have a lot of other media outlets. If it hadn't been covered by somebody, we wouldn't be seeing it here.
"...that the Mainstream Media is reluctant to share" is maddening but unfortunately not surprising. "If it bleeds, it leads" is an old motto in journalism. A couple of years ago, a Black Lives Matter group in Wichita, Kansas was planning on holding a regular demonstration. But the leader of the group had a different idea – why not hold a picnic and invite the entire community, including the police? They did, and it was a great success. One young Black man said he never thought he would have a pleasant lunch sitting next to a cop, but it happened. I read this story on an international news website (RT.com) and did a search to see where else it appeared. I could only find it on a Wichita news website and a St. Louis, Missouri news website. The mainstream media must have known about the picnic but chose to ignore it. They must publish news of racist incidents, but by deliberately choosing not to publish hopeful news like the Wichita story and images like the ones here, they are part of the problem of systemic racism in the U.S.
As Dr. Martin Luther King said " you can't defeat hate(darkness) with hate, only light can do that". These images show the light, the love, this is what will destroy the hate, the ignorance, and the non-action. Loving kindness to the black community and all.
attacking "The Media" is counterproductive. Where did these images appear? In media. Reddit is media, Facebook is media, NBC (which you quote) is media. Teaching people to mistrust media is divisive and self-defeating. Without media, nobody knows anything. Without media, there is no "Bored Panda!"
I'm crying... this was so wholesome and I'm glad I got a chance to see a part of the world that I know is there but is always hidden from me. I'm black and this is easing my mind - we really are all one race - the human race. We all bleed the same blood and cry the same tears. We breathe the same air - and when one of us says they can't, we fight for them. This is beautiful. These are steps toward peace. I personally encourage peaceful protesting, but I understand the rioters - at least the ones who are rioting for Floyd and all the others and not just as a chance to destroy. I don't condone it, but I understand it. That being said, I broke down at the sight of all this kindness during hard times. Bringing people together instead of tearing us apart. Shows that not everyone is an enemy. Many are allies - When I tell you I'm crying during a meeting - and it's the ugly cry too. <3 Love, peace, and good fortune to all of my brothers and sisters out there - all skin colors, all features <3

I love seeing posts like these, but I'm wondering if the pictures of cops kneeling, marching, and putting down their batons were checked. I'm in NYC and unfortunately the police have been making these grand "peaceful gestures" to use as propaganda. Minutes after kneeling, getting up and spraying and detaining peaceful protesters. They're doing it to get the pictures out there to make them look good. I've made this mistake of sharing what I found later to be propaganda and want to share the word that we should all be cautious when posting these kinds of photos.
This is awesome and yes we are stronger together.
These pics show that there are good cops out there, they must have their heads in their hands over the rotten ones. Perhaps they come from precincts where anti racism is inculcated from the top. But otherwise, good the ones in precincts that sanction racism must come forward and speak out or it will never change. Investigations into cultures of racism must be national, international, and given teeth, or nothing will change, they'll just wait for the furore to die down then back to business as usual
This is a compilation of vids which are the most moving and encouraging I’ve seen about what’s been happening as a result of the brutal murder of George Flyod, symbolising institutional racism in AmeriKKKa, executed by a racist psycho cop. At some point in these mass protests, police and military personnels need to decide which side they are on. The question is …. W
