Good design is practical, functional, puts the user first, and is intuitive in how it works. So it’s only natural that we have high interior design expectations for the most important room in public areas and businesses. Let’s not beat around the bush, we’re talking about the restroom!

Call it what you will—the bathroom, the John, the powder room, the Iron Throne, or even the Chamber of Secrets—you really can’t downplay just how vital this space is, whether you’re at a restaurant, cafe, hotel, shopping center, or elsewhere. Everybody pees. Everybody poops. Everybody knows how awkward (and sometimes even icky) using public restrooms can be. So privacy and hygiene are areas of huge importance.

Fortunately, the world’s full of genius designers who love making life better, simpler, and more enjoyable for us all. Below, you’ll find some of the very best design solutions to the problems that restrooms have, all collected by Bored Panda. Remember to upvote the design decisions that you think are just spot-on and should be the standard everywhere.

Bored Panda reached out to the American Restroom Association to learn more about the need for good design solutions to public bathrooms, how there's a split between the interests of the government and that of businesses, and how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected restroom designs. Tim Pyle, the Executive Director at the ARA, said that the core reason why hygiene, privacy, and other issues aren't addressed are financial. You'll find the full interview below.

Tim, the Executive Director at the ARA, explained to Bored Panda that finances lie at the core as to why public restrooms might not be up to suitable standards. "It has been easier and less expensive for municipalities (cities, counties, states, etc.) to allow the for-profit sector to fill the gap. If a national coffee shop chain or fast food establishment has a bathroom, why do we, the government, need to build and maintain one?" Tim explained the way that the US government thinks in this case.

Meanwhile, he highlighted the fact that businesses have "a vested interest in improving the customer experience," citing a study that a whopping 95 percent of patrons are less likely to be return customers if they had a bad bathroom experience. "However, this leaves gaps in the restroom infrastructure. The designs are there; the will of government to fill the gap or ensure access is not," Tim showed Bored Panda where a large part of the problem lies.

There have been some advancements in the need for good design solutions for restroom hygiene issues since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Tim from the ARA had this to say: "We’ve seen particular interest in antimicrobial materials for high-touch surfaces as well as automation to reduce the 'touch' factor. Also, the way coronavirus is transmitted has put a focus on improving ventilation and air cleaning systems. More simply, better scheduling for regular cleaning is a low-cost way to improve hygiene. Just having a user see that someone is cleaning puts them more at ease,"

I like that idea except in Australia we would need 2 pedals. By law it is mandatory for all new toilets to have a dual flush system. One for half flush and one for full flush.

According to Tim, it's very important that the public has access to clean, comfortable, and well-designed restrooms outside of their own homes. "Since 2004, it’s been the reason for the existence of the American Restroom Association. Everyone needs a restroom—it’s a fact of life. One that, for whatever reason, people just don’t like to talk about," Tim pointed out that it's a still a slightly taboo topic.

"The Federal government requires the availability of restrooms in the workplace, yet there is no such coordinated effort for public spaces. That is something we are advocating for. Until then, it’s a crapshoot (pun intended) as to whether a restroom will be there when you need one," he said.

But can you tell which ones are veins and which arteries? Plus addicts are in rush, their hands are probably shaking, because they neeeeed the drug. That is also not good for focusing. And if they take the drug for a long period of time, their veins are getting weaker and it makes difficult to find "the right spot". Nurses often have troubles to find a vein in their body which is in good enough condition to let them put medicaments in it. or blood transfusion.

I can see a very prominent vein in this picture. Also heroin users will just find a different place, quite possibly one that is much less safe, or they will simply find the vein due to previous puncture marks.

Cool so instead of doing it in a relatively safe place they will be forced to do it on the street or somewhere unsanitary where they may suffer from infections. We need harm reduction in place for people suffering from addiction, not this "keep out of my bathroom" mentality.

As pointed out by others, this is an awful idea. Addicts will be desperate to inject whatever the situation (as a former heroin and crack addict now 23 years in recovery I know) so all this does is makes their injecting practices unsafe risking loss of limb or even death. Promoting safer injecting practices means that is saves lives and is cheaper on society in the long run

I don’t understand this. I’ve never been a drug user, but wouldn’t one of 2 things happen 1. The addict would just go somewhere else where they can see their veins (assuming they can’t just palpate them) or 2. They would miss their vein and die. One makes the lights kind unnecessary and 2 makes the situation much worse. 😕

Missing your vein doesn't mean you die Instantly. When I was in my addiction, I eventually couldn't hit very well and would miss all the time. It just stings and you get a red, welt like swelling. Depending on where a person misses though, it can still get you slightly well.

This is just cruel. Intravenous drug users are addicts. There's a lot that can go wrong injecting - blood clots, missing the vein, fraying metal from the syringe tip into their vein after repeated attempts, etc. Instead of creating more risk for people with addiction, why not implement safer use practices instead? No one will give up their addiction because of a blue light.

As a former heroin addict, you will find a vein no matter what if you really want to. Heroin addicts are desperate to not be sick, so you're never going to be able to stop someone in that frame of mind. This is why I believe there should be more safe injection sites available.

Oh great! Then you force them to go outside and do it in the open for everyone including kids to see. Yay! Smh.. Luckily in my country (Denmark) we have safe houses for addicts, with health care staff, that provide safe spaces for using, clean needles etc and emergency assistance if needed. So many lives have been saved. And they of course also offer help with rehab for those who want it. You can't stop people from using by making conditions harder for them. But you can save lives and protect the sorrounding communities from being exposed to seeing active users and having dirty needles lying around. The addicts themselves do not like to use in public anyway.

The next suburb over from mine is a bit on the skeevy side, and once when we were at the shopping centre there my sister found someone passed out in the bathroom. They've now installed this kind of lighting - it must have been a recurring issue.

PS: When someone told me what the lighting was for, I had a go at examining my veins in that bathroom and sure enough I had a really hard time spotting any.

It's cruel. An addict won't be detered by a blue light. But, it does increase their risks of blood clots, missing the vein, or getting metal shards into their bloodstream from repeated attempts. Oh, and it generally means they'll spend more time in the bathroom anyway. It's a bad idea on all sides.

It's cruel. A blue light won't deter someone with an addiction. It will however increase their risk of getting blood clots, missing their vein, or getting metal shards into their bloodstream from repeated attempts. Compassion and safer practice strategies are how we improve things. Cruel ostracization like this isn't.

I lived in a place with a small open gallery below. At night a lot of crackheads slept in there, but got better after a store turn the blue light after closing. In Brazil none living in the streets can be trusted - because there is an ocean of bad people and few drops of good people in a bad situation, even on soup distribution these get in front of old people, children and even workers who lives on the streets... sad but true

Wow...all the people saying it just means addicts dont have a safe space to shoot up in.... These lights are used in Asda where i live. The ladies bathroom in Asda where there are three cubicles. So no, i dont blame them for having these lights installed because other customers (KIDS TOO) and staff should not have to deal with someone shooting up and dirty needles being left. It is not up to the likes of Asda to sort out the drug problem. Look to governments to put in 'safe spaces'.

As anyone with even a minor visual disability will confirm, these lights make it nearly impossible to find just about anything, including any sort of medication. Perhaps someone who's completely blind has gotten used to this but.....

That has to be in the US. Only some bitter american would come up with that (if it's not the US, please let me know). That scheme really pisses me off. That's almost torture. Why not a clean place for injection? We keep forgetting those folks are sick and they need our help.

People that take medications that require injections do not need to find a vein. And medications that do require regular infusions directly into the bloodstream usually have a port that is put in that allows them to take the medications without having to hunt for a vein. Usually those are people who are cancer patients and I've never known any of them that take their chemo at night clubs or casinos. They usually save that for home infusions because of how crappy it makes them feel afterwards.

Public Toilet At Shopping Centre Has A Extra-Small Toilet Seat For Little Humans

Public Toilet At Shopping Centre Has A Extra-Small Toilet Seat For Little Humans

im-Scary-Terry-bitch Report

There are several main issues afflicting public restrooms, including hygiene standards, comfort through privacy, and vandalism. Violate any one of those three and customers are less likely to have a great time using your other services. Meanwhile, provide them a safe, clean, beautiful environment in which to errr ponder the nature of life and the multiverse and you’ll make them feel right at home.

While a lot of potential issues could be solved by throwing more money at the problems, hiring more staff to clean more often, etc., the crux of everything is seeing the potential pitfalls before getting bogged down by them. That’s where design solutions come in. With them, you’re basically investing into solutions upfront and cutting off potential issues before they even show up.

For instance, touching surfaces at most public restrooms can be a strong yuck factor for adults and kids alike. Throw in the danger of a global pandemic and you’ve got some people seriously worried and extremely anxious. They’d rather hold it in and be in pain than use a disgusting toilet that looks like the villain of a low-budget horror movie.

Emergency Alarm Chords Running Along The Floor Of The Disabled Toilet In Berlin Airport In Case Someone Falls Over And Requires Assistance

EGPL21 Report

So minimizing the ick factor and maximizing cleanliness becomes a priority. How this problem gets solved depends on the designer. Some might opt for designs that let us use and flush the toilet while making absolutely minimal contact with surfaces. Others might go for self-cleaning or easily-cleaned surfaces or go for something that’s the perfect solution that nobody’s thought of yet.

Meanwhile, let’s talk a bit about privacy and comfort. Odds are, you know somebody in your life who’s wary of using any restroom in public. It might be a friend or a family member. It might even be you. Some people simply think that going to the bathroom is embarrassing, even though it’s an absolutely natural and unavoidable part of our existence as human beings.

We’re not in Roman times with public bathrooms anymore (for better or for worse) and we need modern design decisions for modern restroom problems. Thankfully, some designers have already digested some of these issues and provided genius responses. Yes, everybody pees and poops, but will everybody implement smart designs after they learn about them? That’s an important question for another time.
