Woman Feels ‘Violated’ When A Man Uses A Gender Neutral Bathroom In Front Of Her
People in the U.S. have been arguing over gender-neutral public bathrooms for years – and opinions appear to still be split. Some people say that it makes them feel uncomfortable, while others say that it provides safety and inclusivity to all. Twitter user @MaryBear_ took to the platform to share her opinion and experience in a gender-inclusive bathroom and people in the comments had divided reactions.
The woman said that she was in the bathroom stall, and two men came in while she was on her way out and that their presence and use of the bathroom made her feel uncomfortable. Scroll down to read the story for yourself and share your opinion in the comments.
A woman took to Twitter recently to share her complaints about a man in a gender-neutral bathroom
However, not everyone was supportive of her complaints
While other people backed her up
While gender-segregated bathrooms seen as a standard today, they are actually a modern invention. Less than 300 years have passed since the first gendered bathrooms first appeared in Paris in 1739. In the U.S., the gender-specific bathrooms weren’t put into law until the ‘separate spheres’ social phenomenon of the late 1800s. This ideology stated that women should avoid public spaces and focus on the home.
People in the comments felt the OP missed the point of gender-neutral bathrooms altogether
Gender-neutral bathrooms provide equal rights to both non-gender conforming and gender-conforming people. For non-binary and trans people, they provide a safer zone and a more inclusive place to use the bathroom; and are safer for families with children, as parents are able to accompany their other-gender children to wash up. Beyond safety, gender-neutral bathrooms provide more access to people with disabilities who might have other-gender caregivers.
This story is full of bull, sorry. It seems like the bathroom having no lock was the error that should have been fixed. It seens like the woman is trying to start a gender discussion that is absolutely not neccessary. Also the last comment is so accurate. I mean, she thanked the 2nd man for respecting her, yet it was a one stall bathroom and he was simply waiting. She has to adress the bathroom company about thr lock, THAT is the problem.
I mean, the guy was kinda weird in that he didn't wait for the current occupant to exit the bathroom before doing his business, But that would have been just as weird if another woman had walked in and sat down to do her business. Human strangers don't generally bathroom that way in the west, right? So yeah, not really a gender issue so much as lock issue + a weirdo issue. Also if you're uncomfortable with the possibility of a stranger (or anyone) walking in on you in the bathroom, why would you choose to use one where the lock is broken in the first place?
Load More Replies...If it's literally a toilet with a sink 1 ft away from it, basically a single person toilet, it doesn't matter what gender it's for, it's obviously for one person at a time only.
The error is with the company who should have put a lock on the door.

it said single STALL not single bathroom. A stall within the room means that multiple people can be in the room with you but there is only one stall.
Load More Replies...Then don't use the gender neutral bathroom. I highly doubt there was no lock on the door or that this even happened. I suspect she just wanted her 15 minutes. If there was no lock, why the hell did she use it to begin with?
Yeah. If the issue was that SOMEONE barged into a single-use bathroom while she was still using it then it's got nothing to do with gender so why even mention it? The problem is the lack of lock on the door - not anything about men or bathroom gender assignments. If she as a woman - doesn't want to see male/male-presenting people in a bathroom environment then use the women's. As far as I can tell she decided to make this a gender issue without any real reason.

Load More Replies...So what I am gathering from the story is that it is a single unisex toilet cubicle and seems like the lock didn’t work or had no lock, which would be the fault of the establishment. So the guy entered the stall not realising it was occupied due to no lock, but he should have walked out as soon as he realised someone else was in there. Yes the man should have waited and shouldn’t have peed in front of her due to human decency. But her claim of “violation” is extreme to say the least.

The language makes it confusing at first when the problem in a nutshell is that she was in a single person toilet with a single toilet bowl and a sink and someone came in before she had finished and started using it, which is gross, she has a point even as a man if a another man did that to me I would be like "WTF". I think the way she explained it was confusing at first as it gives the impression that she was upset that a man would also use a gender neutral toilet when the problem was that he was using a toilet that she was in.
How does a (presumably) public restroom carry expectations of privacy, and what bathroom has no lock? I've never seen a no-lock door even in the skankiest public restrooms. In any case, sorry she was so upset, but heaven help her if the OP goes to an outdoor music festival. The open-trough urinals... Yeesh...
Ewe!!! Black people have been protesting to remove "colored" bathrooms and here is a woman wanting to bring back thise s****y days. Its lije she wants to go back to pre-apartheid era. This is so unfortunate.
If it was a bathroom with a separate stall, then man #1 did nothing wrong. But if was a single room with a toilet and sink, then he was certainly wrong. You don't just go in a bathroom like that when someone else is in there, no matter the gender. I would feel violated too in that instance.
I'm sorry but...I could understand her reaction if a guy game into a women's bathroom and did that but it was gender neutral so this is a non-issue. This ain't got s**t to do with gender issues at all. It;s a f*****g privacy issue.
The first feminists who fought for separate bathrooms for women sure are happy in their graves that cheapstake companies uses feminism as an excuse to build only one bathroom. For everyone.
I didn't know that was part of the suffrage/feminist movement! But I'm glad they fought for their (and now our) rights. Every step is a little bit closer to better, it's a process, just gta keep on steppin

That whole "I'm humble enough to share with white women...and now men too?!" S**t shows she's already a bigot through and through. Humble lol yeah
The door couldn't be locked, so a man "violated" her, and GN toilets are great, as long as men don't try to use them even when they're open, all clear. But in the end, what does she want? Who's the bad guy? What can we do for her? Should we start a gender war because the man needed to pee and walked into an open bathroom? Should we boycott this establishment that doesn't put locks on bathrooms? Was it really just a one-stall bathroom? With no lock? Really? Where's the gofundme?
1. You went into a "gender neutral" bathroom (did you not look it up?) 2. You were NOT violated. No one touched, harassed or even addressed you. 3. You may have felt uncomfortable but it was a bathroom and all he did is what he was supposed to to do. He came in and used the bathroom. Nothing was done to you. 4. Speculating about what "could" have happened is stupid because anything that could have happened n the bathroom could also happen out side of it. Next time pay attention to the sign. If you are uncomfortable sharing a restroom with men then use a female designated of the private family restroom. At any rate you got the attention you were seeking but you were not violated (you might want to look that up, too).
For some reason I do not feel like it was a single person poopscoot. Why would it be gender neutral if only one person at a time could use it? Would it not just be a toilet? I think this woman went in for a p**s in a GN loo and didnt realise that she wouldn't be the only one using it : .
I'm wondering if it had a stall toilet and urinal? If it was a one toilet bathroom it wouldn't have needed to be in a stall as a stall is installed (excuse the pun) when there may be others using the bathroom at the same time

And now she'll compare "man-persons, to white-persons"... making me think this girl wants to complain... about something, and the harder it gets to complain about injustice, the more insane the complaints need to be. You want an all-girl facility... FIND ONE!~
if you have an issue with gender neutral people, just use the woman's bathroom. it would save the rest of us from having to read this c**p.
The name of the game was painted on the door: "gender neutral". If you can't play by the rules, stay out!
Okay. The first thing she said was that she used a gender neutral bathroom..... which means anybody can use it (men, women, transgender, etc.). If you are not comfortable with the chances you will share this bathroom with another gender, then why use the gender neutral bathroom?!?!? If you do not want to use the bathroom next to men and you are a woman... then use the women's restroom and vice versa for men. Simple, common sense. This is not a lock issue or a respect issue. The only issue is her her own, nobody else's or the companies fault. She has nobody to blame but herself. She just wanted her own private bathroom. smh.
Personally, I think if someone feels 'uncomfortable' its just like someone getting 'offended', get over it. Your uncomfortable-ness is not my problem.
My assumption of a gender neutral bathroom is that both men and women can use that particular bathroom, not that they can use it at the same time. That just common sense. Man #1 should've shown some class and waited until she left the bathroom.
First off this isn't the women's restroom..it's a gender neutral. Second if a woman walks into the men's room to per cause women take forever...men are cool with it...reverse that and women call 911 on a man.. So much for equality,..now this person wants to claim gender neutral bathrooms for just women or mtf?.. Cause what..all men are stereotyped as rapist?
She's just looking for something to be mad about. If it really bothered her, she would have either left, or would have used a strictly woman's room in the first place. It's like being offended there's pecan ice cream at an ice cream shop because you don't like nuts. That's how stupid this is.
She said: quote 'As a woman, I felt uncomfortable'. unquote And yet she used a gender-neutral bathroom. So are you a woman or are you gender-neutral? If you are a woman then use the ladies bathroom and feel safe and comfortable. If you are gender-neutral then don't forget that the gentleman had the same righ to use it as you had!

Don't use a fkn gender neutral bathroom then! That's the whole point of gender neutral bathrooms, THERE ARE NO GENDERS THERE! If you ACT like a woman and treat men like men by feeling violated, you don't get the concept of gender neutral.
Part II: Whoever does not like this kind of mixed-sex bathroom, which I described here in Part I, must be given the use of a bathroom that gives privacy and/or is same-sex thus, each and every person be given a choice and thus, each and every person be pleased. Maybe use the female bathroom like a female should instead of creating problems that does not need to be created.
Oh just let it go,not so strange anymore anything is possible or can and will happen, and Now what, tey and stop it,that ain't gonna happen
FOR F**K'S Gender nuetral pathroom. Man went in a peed as he would in front another man. Do you want to treated with the same respect and rules as a man. You might have to see some d**k.
Just another s**t stirring comment, looking for problems where they're are none.
I have a feeling there was a closed stall, otherwise, how could there not be a lock? Who would do their business in a bathroom without a lock and no stall? If she was washing her hands, anyone could come in and use a stall, that's how stalls work! Very confusing and exaggerated story IMO.
This is a stupid post, Mr. Bored Panda. Not enough details to form any opinion. It's just comment-tantrum bait.
We have exactly half of our staff female, the other half male. There is ONE toilet, with sink and disposal unit for lady items. No problems sharing with others, but there is a good lock on the door so no-one comes in while I'm sitting on the toilet. THAT would be a problem for me, no matter what the gender of the intruder. But if there were a separate stall with a closed door, not a problem either.
I still don't understand what a "gender neutral bathroom" is. At best it should be a place where a parent can bring their child of either sex. I am a woman. No way do I want to be in a room washing my hands when a strange man enters -- even if he doesn't use the urinal -- even if he is in a stall. Puh-leeze. Let us each have our moments of privacy.
And that's fine to feel that way. It's that she chose a gender neutral facility when she would clearly prefer a single gender facility, seemingly just so she could complain that it was gender neutral
Load More Replies...I don’t care if the bathroom is gender neutral. You simply don’t use it if there is no lock. Or you make sure a friend stays right outside of it when you do your business to make sure no one goes in. If this is a one stall bathroom, then you should be more careful next time. I feel like we’re not getting the full story and you are looking for attention.
Its like a gas station with a SINGLE TOILET AND SINK! She didnt belong in there or they all belonged in there. "Gender neutral" washrooms are just handicapped washrooms because Men and Women share them one at a time.
I identify as Androgynous and I hate gender defined bathrooms and find neutral gender ones perfect for me but most are single occupancy and you lock the door while your in there.
Hopefully as laws change and the bathrooms become more common, future building sites will allow space for three types of bathroom not two, and the gender neutral bathroom will become a standard building regulation (and have multiple facilities in the bathroom ^-^)
Load More Replies...We had those growing up, they were just called family bathrooms. It had a sink, one toilet stall with a door and a urinal. Being a kid of divorced parents, my dad always took me to the men's room and as soon as he announced he was bringing in his daughter, dudes turned around or left. I've see an issue, nor have I ever had an issue with gender neutrality and bathrooms.
Didn't the stall have a door? If so, the first man should have closed and locked the stall door before urinating. In any event, the woman should have been on high alert given that the bathroom door didn't have a lock of some kind. Actually, she should have looked for a bathroom with a lock.
Not sure how true much of this is, it seems purposely inflated to cause a stir. But, if it is a gender neutral bathroom, AND had more than one stall, then the biological AND assumed gender should be welcomed regardless of what other biological or assumed gender is present (after all, the concept here is equality instead of separation of genders, thus it matters not). If however it is a single stall, then the door should contain a lock since it is single person use at a time...again gender does not matter here, only that it is a single occupant (or if you are helping a toddler than you and the young one). If there is no lock then maybe it is a poor design for that bathroom? If I had someone walk into the bathroom when I occupied it, AND there was only a stall for myself, I would be upset as well. Regardless of the gender who walked in. (edit: I use assumed as a definition, not to be rude or insulting but because I do not have another term that would be considered proper without insulting one group or another. This was the least offensive one I could think of that also effectively showed the difference)
I really don't want to have anybody right next to me having a wee - regardless of gender. Still, I am not a fan of unisex toilets. I am not comortable jiggeling my bits around in my clothes or touchign up make-up while a guy stands right next to me. Another safety zone gone.
The story was Misleading at first to me. The 2 Crucial Details, i.e. NO LOCK for A Single-Toilet Gender-Neutral ... or More Correctly ... Gender-Inclusive Restroom, could Not be Squeezed into those 280 characters? Then, do what other Twitter users do, Add the Part 2 as a reply of the Part 1 to tell the Whole story with NO Hold Backs ... both ... Bladder and Tears! If So, we can consider the possibility of Man#1 being in REAL trouble to lose control of his poor bladder and Man#2 either respecting Both Occupants in the restroom or simply being Forced to wait Outside of that Single-Toilet Gender-Inclusive restroom of NO LOCK ... since NO Space INSIDE, anyway! And it is already the 21st Century, neither need to be Humble to share a Single-Toilet restroom of NO LOCK with someone else of the same sex but different complexion, nor need to Feel Violated to do so with someone else of the opposite sex and/or different complexion! The Issue here should be: WHY NO LOCK Installed?!
I bet she feels so violated that her own home doesn't have gender neutral bathrooms. She's going to have a hard time in the real world.
I was wondering if she has two toilets at her house; one for women of exclusively her race and standards, and one for men and women of other races (probably a longdrop outhouse)
Load More Replies...It said it was a one STALL bathroom, not a one toilet bathroom....although one stall is still one toilet, STALL indicates there was a toilet within a stall instide the bathroom... so the toilet is in a stall and you have to walk outside the stall to use the sink to wash your hands. So my only question is... did he clsoe the stall door to pee or leave it open? Although men pee in front of each other... it's not abnormal... so he might not have seen anything wrong with peeing in front of the people in the bathroom with him. I dont' understand why she didn't jsut use the womens bathroom if she has a problem with men going to the bathroom in the same room with her...
O gee, these kind of people really make me tired. Let me guess, she was discriminated in three fold as well for being half Puerto Rican and half Spanish? And her being insecure about her sexual preference really made it an attempt for everyone else to try and disrespect her. And oh yeah as she was claustrofobic the guy was discriminating her for that as well by walking in? I call bullcrap, period. If you enter a unisex bathroom and want to be treated equally, expect seeing 'people' taking a p**s (man or woman or anything in between) whether it's standing up or sitting down . If you're offended by that, don't go to the unisex stalls! If there was only 1 cubical, fix the lock and don't make the other guy into a rapist just cause you need to vent your insecurity online. The entire idea of unisex bathrooms is to refuse to look at gender, race or whatnot. All her posts deny that very fact.
Not sure I buy this at all. If it was a bathroom with one toilet and one sink that’s a single person bathroom. Doesn’t matter what that person identifies as, it’s just one person at a time. My guess there was a lock on the door that either was unused (perhaps accidentally) or the lock was broken. No single person public bathroom doesn’t have a lock.
I think it's good that they have gender neutral bathrooms but I'm torn on which side about this story though. I think I'm in the middle on this one.
I miss the days when a young fine lady like myself could use the mens urinal and get applause from my fellow manfriends. But who the f**k am I to say, I guess I never cared enough to give a damn about s**t..

Load More Replies...I wish that in New York City and in the rest of the USA, there are many bathrooms (including many public bathrooms) that are mixed-gendered, have at least two toilets, the toilets (1) have no doors, (2) have no stalls, (3) have no privacy, and both men and women are allowed to use and actually use this type of bathroom together at the same time and whoever does not like it be given the use of a bathroom that gives privacy and/or is same-gendered and thus, each and every person be given a choice and thus, each and every person be pleased. Also, anyone may read my article on bathrooms and give feedback on it, here is the link to my article on bathrooms;https://www.mansmarbles.com/post/2017-12-30-a-case-for-bathrooms-on-nyc-subway-trains
If it was a one toilet bathroom it wouldn't have needed to be in a stall as a stall is installed (excuse the pun) when there may be others using the bathroom at the same time
Load More Replies...This is ridiculous. If I understand this.. this "girl-person" chose to use a Gender Neutral facility, then feels entitled to complain when another person uses it, but it is unlike her?

THIS WOMAN IS PATHETIC MAN MY GOD I HAVNT SEEN SOMEONE SO IDIOTIC , ISSUES FOR EVERYTHING
I reached down and felt this weird feeling. Like having butterflies but they were warm and exciting. And moist.
