Video games are for everyone. And everyone plays them, no matter their gender or background. Because video games are awesome! It’s a simple idea, but some people still find it hard to grasp.

When Shayna Moon, Associate Producer at the Sony studio in Santa Monica, shared the time a guy talked down to her and questioned if she even plays on a PlayStation, she sparked a viral Twitter thread. Other women shared their own experiences about what happened when dudes talked down to them because of their geeky hobbies. Scroll down, read about what happened, and share your own experiences in the comments, dear Pandas.

Shayna’s Twitter thread got over 90k likes and was retweeted more than 7.9k times which just goes to show that her message resonated with a lot of geeks out there.

I started sometimes giving such braindead answers too, quickest way to get rid of undesirables.

Commenting on strangers like that is impolite in any situation, really. Hope that taught him to mind his damn business.

This seems to happen so often, with female creators getting dismissed by fans of their own work.

Shayna is a true professional and nobody should doubt her love of video games. She worked in development teams behind the immensely popular God of War video game which was released in 2018 and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Shayna also volunteers with Amplifying New Voices, a program designed to educate diverse candidates on the ins and outs of the gaming industry.

For her achievements and involvement with video games most of her life, Shayna was included in Forbes 30 Under 30 list, in the 2020 Games category. That’s the kind of recognition we video game geeks could only dream about!

I'd tell him I want to return it & buy it at some place that doesn't hire sexist people.

Age is just a number. IQ is a very inportant number. This guy probably had a very low important number.

According to Shayna, she has a “people-first” approach when it comes to video game production. She focuses on seeing people as individuals and seeing what work processes help them feel at home and keep them motivated to do their best.

But Shayna has a lot more talents than just working on video games. She’s also a writer and boasts some short stories and pieces of fiction that you can find on her personal website. In fact, she’s been writing fanfiction since 2003!

Yes! Now that I've transitioned to male, people assume I'm a video game expert (I'm not). Crazy gender s**t.

You actually ASKED for something new to read, he recommends something, then disses you for not having read it. No class...

I was in line at the supermarket last week and this guy thought he was the mayor of the line, trying to tell people where to place their carts and just running his mouth the whole time. I kept saying to myself, "not my goat, not my problem". Then he starts spouting, "It's like that song about keeping your hands to yourself by that woman from years ago" and he kept going on about it. I finally snapped. I said, "First of all, it wasn't a woman. Secondly, it was the 1986 song Keep Your Hands to Yourself by The Georgia Satellites. I actually saw them in concert back in the 80's, they opened for REO Speedwagon at SPAC." He dejectedly said, "It wasn't a woman?" I said, "No, it was The Georgia Satellites, you can look it up". He shut up after that, paid for his stuff and left. It wasn't even 8am and I was up to here with the whole situation. Charlie-up...49348d.jpg Charlie-up-to-here-jpg-5e7cd4a49348d.jpg

Exactly. I can appreciate and even create music without knowing who wrote or performed a song on the radio!

It's very easy to confuse social awkwardness with sexism. As a professional, other coders can be very clumsy sometimes, is it wrong? yes, is it deliberate? rarely. Is it sexism, not always. Be careful snapping off those clumsy attempts at conversation starters as you'll find there won't be a second.
