Homophobic Couple Ask “Dear Abby” For Advice On Gay Neighbors, Get A Lesson On Bigotry Instead

Why people choose to write to ‘agony aunts’ in an effort to solve their problems, I’ll never know. Because why talk it through with friends and family when you can have it published in a newspaper for all to see? Sometimes I think that it’s all a big scam that newspapers pull to titillate their readers with scandal, some of the scenarios are just beyond belief at times.

That being said, the “Dear Abby” advice column has become something of a national institution. It started way back in 1956 by Pauline Phillips under the pen name “Abigail Van Buren,” and has been featured in thousands of newspapers over the years. Pauline passed away in 2013 aged 94, and her contribution to American life and culture was recognized with a “Hollywood Walk of Fame” star.

Now run by Pauline’s daughter Jeanne, the column is still going strong as she continues to give “sound, compassionate advice, delivered with the straightforward style of a good friend.”

This entry, written by a couple “unhappy in Tampa,” seems like it could’ve quite easily have come from 1956. They felt like they were the victims of unfair treatment from their neighbors, and wanted Abby’s assurance that it wasn’t they that were, in fact, the problem.

“Dear Abby, My husband and I relocated to Florida a little over a year ago and were quickly welcomed into our new neighbors’ social whirl,” they wrote. “Two couples in the neighborhood are gay — one male, one female. While they are nice enough, my husband and I did not include them when it was our turn to host because we do not approve of their lifestyle choices. Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that we are bigots!”

“Abby, we moved here from a conservative community where people were pretty much the same. If people were “different,” they apparently kept it to themselves. While I understand the phrase “when in Rome,” I don’t feel we should have to compromise our values just to win the approval of our neighbors. But really, who is the true bigot here? Would you like to weigh in?”

Turns out that Abby would like to weigh in. Living up to her motto of “delivering with a straightforward style,” Abby pulled no punches in setting this hypocritical and slightly deluded couple straight. “Dear Unhappy, I sure would,” she began. “The first thing I’d like to say is that regardless of what you were told in your previous community, a person’s sexual orientation isn’t a “lifestyle choice.” Gay people don’t choose to be gay; they are born that way. They can’t change being gay any more than you can change being heterosexual.”

“I find it interesting that you are unwilling to reciprocate the hospitality of people who welcomed you and opened their homes to you, and yet you complain because you are receiving similar treatment.”

“From where I sit, you may have chosen the wrong place to live because it appears you would be happier in a less integrated neighborhood surrounded by people who think the way you do. But if you interact only with people like yourselves, you will have missed a chance for growth, which is what you have been offered here. Please don’t blow it.”

Boom. Simmering with passive-aggressive sentiment, this classic from Abby still has people talking more than 5 years after it was first published. What do you think? Do you agree with Abby, or was she a little harsh? Let us know in the comments!

Here’s a sample of some people’s responses to the withering put-down

As my "lifestyle choice" is being heterosexual and I openly support and will fight for the LGBTQ community I would never invite that bigot b***h to anything.

I'm not a religious person, but when I see this type of hate I always want to say 'why don't you let God decide whether they go to hell? Why do you feel the need to hurt these people with your hurtful words?' Of course I'm to nervous to say it.

From a Christian: that’s what we’re supposed to do! Be kind! Let God do the judging! That’s not our job. (At least, this is what I’ve been taught and have learned myself.) People need to just chill out and be nice to others, and treat others decently. (You’re getting an upvote. Enjoy!)

Little has changed for the better in 25 years. I'd even say it has gotten worse and it's not going to get any better. Too many people are using the "right to free speech" to spread their messages of hate on social media.

I both agree and disagree, I think for the last few decades things have improved a lot but I also think things are beginning to shift back in the other direction now and it is worrying, I also agree free speech and religious rights are used as coded language for the right to discriminate.

Stuff like this is why I turned away from the church. The bible has all these crazy rules like how you're not supposed to touch a pig's skin or a woman on her period has to go in hiding. You don't see Christian's follow this. In fact if you ask them why they say oh it's the old testament, oh things changed, but why is homosexuality not one of these things? Why do they continue to pick and choose which parts of the bible they'll follow? I just can't with religion. The whole point of Christianity is to be Christ like - meaning a loving, kind, compassionate person. Nothing else is important. Nothing. The bible is a guidebook, storybook, history book. It was written well over 2000 years ago in another language, has been heavily edited, and some parts have been omitted. How can you follow a book that old in 2019? I don't get it.

The Old Testament is for history. The New is what Christians are meant to follow. You’re right. We’re meant to follow the teachings of the very man who earned us our name. Sadly, many aren’t good at that. People take the Bible incredibly literal as it’s the best, and only, thing we have. Sadly, they take the wrong parts and put them on a pedestal. Isn’t shrimp an abomination? And wearing clothes of mixed fabric? And planting different crops in a certain order (I can’t remember. I’m sorry if I’m wrong!) I don’t go to church for fear of rejection myself, but I do have my faith, and any place is a place to worship in my eyes. People are just jerks because others are different. (I’m sorry for butting in, and for rambling! I’m not sure if you meant that you just don’t go to church, or if you aren’t religious anymore. I don’t want to cause any trouble. I agree with you.)

How are they compromising their values...do they think of they invite homosexuals to a party that they will automatically be indoctrinated. It sounds like they are upset because they just found out that they are major jerks and they want an advice column to make them feel better about being a-holes.

If being bisexual were a choice, why would I have gone through the years of depression and paranoia that I experienced, leaving me with PTSD and anxiety? It’s not a choice. Treat people nicely. If you punch someone, expect them to punch back. Don’t play victim. Get your priorities straight. Be kind. Don’t exclude someone for something they can’t help, especially from something that is easily accessible for everyone, like a dinner. How does one deny hospitality and expect any in return?

The reason aliens don't make themselves known to us is because people like them continue to say and do stupid things on a daily basis. We'd have cities on the Moon by now if the stupidity stopped. But no, homophobes have to be bigoted towards the LGBTQ+ community, Kanye had to claim slavery was a choice, and some woman had to name her daughter ABCDE. These people need to be hit in the head until the stupidity is knocked out of them.

You know, in some circumstances, slavery was a choice: the choice between becoming a slave in that society or starving to death. I don't know if there are any places left in the world in our times where this can happen; this is historical. Even then, people chose life. On the other hand, Kanye is an a*s, pure and simple.

I always told my boys that life is full of choices. You always have a choice on what to do/act/say. But, all choices have consequences, and you have to live with them. You can make any choice you want, but be prepared to live with it. This couple chose to be bigots, and now being ostracized is the consequence. They need to learn to live with their choice and stop whining about the fallout.

Whatever sexual orientation people may have would not prevent me from including them in a meal. Some people are gay while others are transgender. When you consider that many people born this way take their own lives because they can't stand the thought of having to live that way, who are wed to throw stones at them? She is the definition of "bigot". Treating the gay couples in the way she did, contriidictes everything Christ teaches. Jesus teaches what is sin and what is love, one involves humanity and the other does not.

"Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." Seek advice from the Holy Bible, not "Dear Abby", if you are a Christian. That couple should be happy to be rejected by people that would support those lifestyles. Go make friends share your values. Stop trying to keep up with the Jones' that revel in this wicked world!

A True Christian, I hope you don't eat cheeseburgers or bacon, play football, wear polyester, have tattoos, trim your beard, shave your sideburns, braid your hair, wear pearls, or work on Saturday. Those are all sins according to the Bible. Also, you should shun divorced people, especially anyone who remarries after a divorce, with the same vehemence you have against homosexuals. There are many more sins in the Bible that I'm sure you are committing, but those are just a few that come to mind. You can believe however you want, but the world will never take you seriously when you engage in hypocritical behavior.

I'm Chassidic Jewish. We begin our daily prayers with: I hereby take on the Mitzvah to live my fellow person as myself. You can't pick and choose which failings you accept and don't accept. If you believe, as those people do, that the gay coupled is sinning, do they believe that none of the other neighbors ever sin? Do they themselves never sin? Note that I never said that I personally see it as a sin, so don't attack me.

Its their choice and I'm certainly not going to change them but the bible says it is wrong, but all sin is wrong there is enough sin to go around they should be treated like everybody else. For example I am Christian I disagree with Catholic people, but I do not go up and Yell at them, change them, write newspaper articles, or treat them as an outlier both physicialy or mentally.

I have a loving support community and wonderful friends and family. You wanna say that God made me wrong? Take it up with God. I know folks love to quote the Bible but keep in mind, God didn't write it, MAN did. They are stories written by men with all their flaws, opinions and prejudices. God put us here to make the best of life and love and support one another. There are too many folks, like that Tampa couple that thinks it's OK to go against God's law, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF"! BAM

I'm probably going to go completely unnoticed or get completely hated for this but I still felt the desire to express my thoughts on this too so here goes: I don't agree with Abby. I also don't entirely agree with the other couple either... I think it's very rude of them not to include the gay couple because of the choices they've made, but I do think the gay couple did make a choice, they made a choice to get married. They might not have the power to choose there sexuality, but they can choose who they marry, or if they marry at all. I know my opinion is unpopular, but I come from a faith that believes marriage should be between a man and woman. I'm not saying it should be easy for gay people to just never get married, but it's what's right. I'm bisexual too, so I get it to an extent, at least for the last 3 years I've been in love with another woman, who I know I can never be with. It hurts, but I know it's meant to be this way, and for a good reason. Anyway I know my opinion is not

From a Christian: that’s what we’re supposed to do! Be kind! Let God do the judging! That’s not our job. (At least, this is what I’ve been taught and have learned myself.) People need to just chill out and be nice to others, and treat others decently. (You’re getting an upvote. Enjoy!)

I don't get it.

hehart14 avatar
