Gripping Photos of New Zealand’s Largest Gang Will Make You Tremble
New Zealand is a country known more for its picturesque Lord Of The Rings settings than for its gang activity, but it is this unknown dark side that photographer Jono Rotman explores in his powerful series of mob portraits. He managed to get members of New Zealand’s infamous Mighty Mongrel Mob, the largest in the nation, to sit down for stunning portraits that give us a look at a world alien to most of us.
When telling Vice how he had gained access to the mob, Rotman explained, “I told them I wanted to take martial portraits. And you know, regardless of where the Mob are viewed in the social hierarchy, these men have committed to a creed and fought battles, sometimes to the death.”

Share on FacebookWhy would this make me tremble? Just because they have facial tattoos? They look like any other biker gang around the world.
The only thing scary is that they all fancy themselves to mullets. Stylist's nightmare..
Load More Replies...This work is pathetic. The photographer is an idiot. These guys aren't Maori warriors, they are violent criminals, drug dealers, murderers and rapists, they beat their partners and children. I know someone bringing up a child that was created by a gang rape from this gang. The child was given away at birth. You know what would be interesting? Photographs of their victims, but they are too afraid to be photographed because they would be victimised, beaten, raped and bashed some more, their families terrorized and their house and belongings burnt and stolen. These people are monsters, they have no mana, nothing. They are not representative of what it is the be Maori. Disgusting lack of understanding, there's no heroes here mate - bet the photographer's making lots of money out of this though, eh.
very well put and well said Fiona, i am a kiwi in the australian army and have been doing the rounds of the middle east, lots of combat atrocities, these guys remind me of isis/isil, same depraved mentally unbalanced violence and to all those gragging about tough american gangs, you have no idea just how violent and evil these people are.

I was just thinking that. "Why are people who look Maori wearing Nazi symbols?"

real maori warriors earn their mokos through courage and bravery. these wankers use fear and intimidation to get there own way no matter the consequences to other people. that first judge was right. these people are bloody mongrels.
Makes for very interesting portaits, but it is always very sad when I'm reminded we will never escape our murderous & violent primeval origins. No matter what advancements we make, there will always be many who will value that part or nature with pride & see it as a worthy, high accomplishment whether is is waring tribes or nations.
Hmm maybe they dont value that part of Nature with pride & see it as worthy... at all. Maybe they have no where else to turn except to a life of crime and maybe they just dont care what society thinks at all. maybe they dont value anything.

You are right. You can dress up a poodle and make it look mean and scarey. Its the level of hatred in the heart. I fear them because of the hatred and in seeing the one picture of the kids, it is clear the next generation will be every bit as hateful and violent.
Load More Replies...Considering that means that they eat people, it's a little scary
Load More Replies...They don't make me tremble, they do make me disgusted though. You try to romanticize it by saying they follow a creed and fought battles. BS... a thug is a thug. They have probably done some pretty horrible things in their life times and people like you are horrible for making this look cool to a younger generation. You will probably now have at least a small part some future kids choice to become a biker, who either gets killed, kills others or both. Does that make you proud now?
they are a bunch of thugs who are the scum of new zealand society, and te moko is a privilege, for men with Mana, which non of these men have.
THe only one that really gets to me is the last one. Those kids look so sad. :/
There are some serious pussies that have been commenting. Are any of you aware of the level of violence any real gang membership entails?
For those they say you are not scared, you should try walk into their bar and try mingle with them, I'm sure you would lose your s**t. The difference in cultural behavior can be a daunting task to get your head around, let alone they pride themselves on their warrior history. Why else do you think New Zealand has been the best country to uphold indigenous rights? Not because they were softer than the average Englishman but because the Maori were harder. Land wars anyone? Not to mention they slaughtered the first ship of "explorers".
As a kiwi, I dislike this being associated on an international scale with New Zealand. Gangs are a minority here. What they represent doesn't deserve to be glorified. Would be great to see traditional maori items and tattoos to represent Aotearoa.
As a kiwi, I dislike this kind of stuff associated with New Zealand. Gangs are a minority and some use thuggish and intimidating behaviour. That's not what New Zealand is about. Showcase maori, their tattoos and culture. That's more genuine New Zealand.
I used to live in NZ, and I find the Maori tattoos to be beautiful. So these guys really don't scare me.
I'm a Maori New Zealander. These men are tribesmen. Access to guns is limited in NZ, so when they kill someone, it is usually with fist, clubs or machete. Very personal. They are brutal & live brutal lives, so before all you keyboard warriors give out your high horsed opinions thinking your tough, I am tough, I've lived this life, it is frightening. Any other gang? Not really, these are some of the hardest men you'll ever see pictures of, they would make your manhood wither with a glance. Seeing these pics for me dredges up feelings of pain & suffering, fear, anger, aggression, abandonment, but also pride(mana), & the fact that I was blessed to escape this life.
Isn't ironic how most of them are wearing nazi symbols etc. and how nazi movement would have eradicated their "creed" for not being, well german or arian... If history would have allowed it? You can represent hatred or fear but do it in a consistent way? I guess? They are a shame... Nonetheless, great pictures.
im unsure but a friend of mine once told me they wear the nazi look alike things as a sign of rebellion against nazi culture as in to p**s them off... may or may not be right but thats what i was once told

All the comments on here , it's easy to make comments on the internet when you're not scared of getting your a*s beat ...these are probably some of the nicest guys in the world .. I've been a biker my whole life and I've been putting the same category . only time you need to fear us is when you f**k with us .. leave us the f**k alone and we'll leave you alone . most of us would be the one to help your grandma change a tire on the side of the road .. pencil necks like you people making these statements on here.. would drive right past....
They don't represent the true Maori & their heritage and forefathers. Aotearoa has a long history of colonial British War. They do not have any respect for the community, their culture, their history and their forefathers. All they do is install is fear. Their so called brotherhood has nothing to do with their cultural identity. If Only they would serve as Roll Models for the younger generation they would be seen in a different light. Having gang tattoo's all over your face and body serves no purpose but to signal them out as part of society that has not respect for what is the true meaning of what its means to be a Maori and part of Aotearoa. Yes I am a Maori and part of my culture and heritage. I also have my Moko and I know what Tribe and my family history.
The last line tells the whole story... "regardless of where the Mob are viewed in the social hierarchy, these men have committed to a creed and fought battles, sometimes to the death." The concept is too foreign for most men to understand. In our current, ever more fem-centric world masculinity and its trappings are continuously shamed. Western society gives cuckworship service to every anti-male concept, especially penis mutilation, as the key our survival as a civilization. The fem-bots here know no such thing as man tribes. No camaraderie. No facing death. Even girls are in the militaries. The fems feel fear, wariness, caution and, shhh, even tingles, in the face of fearless men. I do not glory monger the Mob. I praise the lost virtues of tribe, man honor, brotherhood. Its all but lost... Or is it. Red Pill!
Are u cuck Are ufick A ru What a f****n joke do u have ba,lls or mamma stilll has them

Who would want to affix their sense of identity to such a ruthless and barbaric group of monsters?
Tabloid headings annoy me. But isn't it just a male shift of the Maori from oppressed tribe?
And a different perspective http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/10643489/Sandwich-gang-humbled-by-offers
Sporting SS and Nazi symbols and most of them are aboriginal. I wonder what the Aryans would think about them?
I used to live in NZ and I find the Maori people and their tattoos beautiful! They really don't scare me.I find them fascinating.
What makes large gangs really scary, are the amount of guns they freely have access to. Give a gang guns and they can kill whomever and wherever they like, coupled with their lack of morals and selfish attitudes. They don't need to dress up.... They can be the average looking Joe. But it's the firearms that make them tough. Take them away and they are nothing. I grew up with these guys in my neighborhood. They are like any other gang. Only in numbers are they tough. Grown men that are still immature. As far as International gangs, the kids killing with guns and out of control....how do you think they would fare alone? They aren't tough. They just have a gun and a collective group of uneducated individuals who encourage and teach them to do wrong.
As a white male who has lived my whole life in Mob territory, next to Mob leaders, schooled with Mob kids and friends with current members they are the most amazing community. They care for thier own members and neighbours and I am yet to meet a member who wasn't lovely. Unfortunately there reputation is huge and well deserved, especially where territory overlaps with the Black Power. As always people can get into gangs because they lack a good family or community of there own, that's what these photos symbolise for me. Side note - you don't see this any more as gang patches were banned from public places in NZ almost 10 years ago, so its just the tattoos and red clothes.
Gorgeous still untouched New Zealand has...gangs? Makes me wonder what on earth they could be rebelling against down there.
A lot of tattoos with a permanent indelible dye ,that is what they are
Just for another perspective, I sat next to a guy on the bus yesterday who was wearing a black hoodie with a bandanna covering his lower face. He had tats all over his left hand and ripped jeans and boots finished the look. Not too savoury. But as I sat there I realised he was listening to one of the mainstream radio stations (Mad Butcher and Bunnings ads featured) and laughing to himself at the Djs' banter. Every so often he lifted the bandanna and popped a wrapped milk toffee in his mouth. When he got up to leave, he pulled down his bandanna, flashed me a brilliant smile and said thank you as I stood up. Just a bloke on his way to work. The look doesn't always tell the full story.
why are do they have Nazi symbols? they look more like Nazi posers to me. If Herr fuhrer, Adolf Hitler saw this, he would laugh and at the same time, offended and have those posers executed. world's largest gang, gtfo.
What makes me tremble is the way of life they (& all our ancestors) had in Nature versus the degenerative living that is done - being torn from such Grace. It is criminal to take humans out of our Natural lives as Nature. And we are paying the price in misery, as seen in their eyes. Tragic. Regenerative Design is growing. Let's do this! Those children deserve better!!! As do all humans.
I don't get it. Why not be happy, enjoy the world around you, be peaceful. Life is too short for c**p.

From what I can see in these comments. No one has a clue about these people.. they're normal just like us. Only difference is the fight till they're last breath for what they believe in. Family friends and brotherhood is paramount.. their tattoos are symbols of experiences memories and beliefs.its not a culture or cult or creed.
