Ever since I started using an app to identify and tag plants and animals, I’ve become more fascinated with insects instead of afraid of them. We had a wind scorpion in our bathroom. My horrified hubby used a hand vac to remove him and I happily released it outside later. A few years earlier I would’ve gone NOWHERE near it and probably would it let die in the vacuum.

Here's a chilling thought: while we're all busy with our daily lives, scientists say the planet is in the middle of its sixth mass extinction. I think our economy is closer to collapse than anyone in media or government is letting on. Yes, Wall Street is thriving but around 60% of Americans are struggling with basic needs & would be devastated by a $1500 emergency expense. This is unsustainable & AI is going to make it MUCH worse very quickly.

The collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current.
It’s the ocean current that’s responsible for the mild climates in Europe by transporting hot ocean water from the Caribbean up the Gulf Stream. The melting ice caps and glaciers affect the salinity and therefore density of the water up near the arctic, interrupting this current. If the AMOC collapses (and it has before), Europe will become inhospitable.

The US electricity system is precarious. As Trump cuts clean energy projects, AI takes up more power/energy than we’ve needed before, and much of our infrastructure has been patched not upgraded, we may start seeing way more brownouts.

The issue is, I think the only way to get away from AI is to go completely off grid.
On a much more positive note, there are some truly spectacular and rare celestial events on the horizon that most people haven't marked on their calendars yet. While we've had some impressive astronomical events in recent years, 2026 is shaping up to be a banner year for sky-gazers.

The dead internet theory has basically already started.
The theory outlines that once AI becomes so good we can’t tell what’s real or fake, the internet will d** off as bots just interact with other bots 24/7. There’s no longer anything authentic and even “creators” lose their jobs to great prompt writing on Sora.

I’m more concerned about AI taking over recruiting. I’ve had one AI “interview”, which was terrible (ATB you sūck!). You’re given strict instructions on background, lighting, and to maintain eye contact with the camera, which doesn’t come naturally to people who don’t post videos of themselves. I’ve logged literally hundreds of hours remote training others yet it still isn’t normal nor comfortable for me to gaze at the camera; I look at the people I’m training. You also aren’t permitted to script your answers while each question is set for 2.5-3 minutes to record your response; not even bullet points because the AI will ‘see’ you reading something… not allowed. It’s stupid. Some questions can be easily addressed in one sentence, others require a more detailed explanation that takes longer than 3 minutes. It’s uncomfortable to speak to a computer in an interview situation. There’s no feedback whatsoever: you can’t read body language, see someone’s eyes, no conversation nor back and forth discussion to dig deeper into something you said. And all the while, you’re aware that an AI is going to assess your “interview” for the right words; if you don’t hit enough of them, nobody will see your interview except for the purpose of fine tuning the AI. The only infinitesimally tiny positives are: You can practice as much as you want before starting the interview itself but the practice questions are completely irrelevant crāp like “describe your favourite meal”. Seriously? And, if you’re anything like me, you watch the video and see all the nervous tics or hand gestures you don’t even notice in a person to person conversation and think, “Wow, I look like a complete idiot”, which actually increases the stress. You can review your answers and re-record up to 3 times each answer to improve your responses. Great /s except the first time you record your answer, you over run the allotted time, which you couldn’t see as you’re supposed to be looking at the dāmn camera! By each third recording I was gibbering like a monkey on speed. The entire experience was dehumanizing. I wasn’t surprised or even upset that there was no response at all to my application. Not even a thanks but no thanks. To be absolutely candid, I’m not sure how I would have responded to an invitation to a second interview. I’d like to think I would have said, “I’m not interested in working for a company that treats people like a commodity. I’m a business analyst! My entire role is to speak to people to truly understand how to define an IT application that meets their needs. AI can’t do that. I’m pretty sure that AI won’t ever be able to do it because, no matter how detailed you delve into prompts, you cannot teach AI to comprehend emotion.” Again, ATB YOU SŪCK!

But Serbia is about to hit the one year anniversary of the Novi Sad railway canopy collapse, the students have been protesting for almost an entire year, and currently people are marching from all over the country to Belgrade and Novi Sad. I think it's gonna be a big one but I have a bad feeling about the potential for police violence and suppression.

Many experts believe this is about to become the defining mental health crisis of our time. As our awareness of future threats grows, our ability to live in the present is being eroded.

The AMOC (Atlantic current) is slowing and may slow considerably in the next century and we don't know when. When it happens we will have a mass extinction and it will be like the movie the day after tomorrow sort of. Europe will freeze, crops will fail, it will be really bad.

Pretty sure the soil fungus that k****d off the Gros Michel banana (The larger and tastier banana we had before the Cavendish bananas we have now) has evolved. The banana species we have now was resistant to this and it’s likely in our lifetime the banana we know now will need to be genetically modified or they will be gone.

Trouble is that Cavendish bananas are genetically identical: This lack of genetic diversity makes the entire crop vulnerable to disease. A pathogen that can k**l one banana plant can k**l all of them, which is a significant problem for the industry, as seen with the threat of Panama disease.

The sun is flipping its magnetic poles right now - something it does every 11 years. North becomes south, south becomes north. Takes about a year to complete.
This is why we've been seeing crazy auroras way further south than normal lately. The sun's magnetic field gets tangled during the flip, causing more solar storms and those incredible light shows.
Wild part? Most people have zero idea the sun is literally reversing its polarity while we're all just going about our day. Next solar flip won't happen until the mid-2030s.

Not life or death by any means but something I am convinced is already happening is the condition of our road surfaces due to general wear and tear. Since most modern road surfaces were originally covered within a relatively short time-frame it looks to me like councils are already struggling to keep up with the vast number of repairs required which will presumably only get worse. And don't get me started on non-existent coordination between utilities whereby the same road gets dug up twice within a matter of months for different services.

Why is generating enough electricity a problem? Why will there be food shortages? Sorry, not WILL be - all of these issues (among others) already exist. Why? Because the world's population is growing exponentially. Martin Luther King Jr commented that overpopulation was a huge problem... over half a century ago. And it took tens of thousands of years to reach that figure. Yet the Earth's human population has more than doubled since then. These facts are presented beautifully in a novel I read a few years ago, but which has stuck with me because it's so utterly terrifying. It's so well written and hugely entertaining, yet I am still freaked out by it. It's called 10:59 by N. R. Baker. If you have any doubts about having children, I urge you to buy a copy.
