This meme I s the best one. My wife and I have been happily married for 18 years. We spent a pittance getting married and are still blissfully together. Ironically nearly all the weddings we’ve been to have ended in divorce and they spent a fortune on them. What a waste of money. I like to gloat about this. Marriage is about the love between two people all the rest is just filler. Yes it should be a special day but it doesn’t need to be expensive. Alas a lot of people or shallow, obsessed with status and are materialistic.

NEVER understood having small children IN a wedding, let alone attending. The whole cute flower girl/ring bearer thing--no thanks. I've seen too many "cute" kiddie meltdowns to make it worth the trouble.
I had an adult only wedding-almost everyone came 100 invited, 95 attended and this was 13 yrs ago. I suspect it's more common now.To each his own. People don't have to attend if the can't or are offended. It was OUR big day-& wanted people to celebrate w/ us if they could make it. The reasons were for some stated here already, noise during vows, etc. And also, we were on an extreme budget. You are charged per head. If someone brings their child, & they don't eat their meal (as kids often don't) we would be charged regardless. More than one venue told us this & I would expect that anyway. Everyone does their wedding how they want it to be.
Why should the couple have to accommodate kids? Wedding ceremonies and receptions have nothing for children to do because they should not be there.

I gave people 8 months notice to get babysitters and still got calls the month before to ask if they could being their (perfectly behaved) children. I used the excuse that I saved on insurance by having no minors. Everyone who cake loved the no kids policy.
Marrying this year. Luckily I don't really know anyone with small kids. :P
My weddings were "childless by choice" despite doting parents' best efforts. We would have a candle-lit cocktail reception, after bedtime, and they'd STILL show up with toddlers in tow, tired, cranky and crying.
Just means I don't have to go! Perfect excuse to get out a social engagement. Yes! (4 kids are hard to find a free [we are broker than broke] sitter for)
We put a notice in with the invitations to our friends that had small children, politely telling them THEY were invited, not their kids (while we do love children, this is our special day - blah, blah, blah). A few people didn't show (because 6 weeks just wasn't enough time to find a babysitter, apparently) but those who did left their kids at home. Two of the women who were asked to leave their kids at home had an attitude about it, which led to me basically ending our friendship. If you can't understand that not everyone thinks your child belongs at an adult function, you're just too self centered and stupid to be in my life.
Most weddings in North America DO have children attend. Most weddings are in fact family affairs - the extent to which depends on how large your extended family is though. It's just that those weddings, even though they are the majority, are not so often shown across media because they are just your typical wedding and not so extravagant as to be on tv

I get the feeling that there is a keeping up with the Jones mindset, and playing one upsmanship to all of this wedding planning. A wedding should not be a competition and people should not brag about the its opulence or the amount of money spent.
