Here in Finland it is also a tradition to allow also people who were not invited to participate to a wedding. But if the uninvited person behaves badly that person can be removed from the party.
People should be able to attend the ceremony if not invited. But not expect to go to the reception event, where numbers are important for catering. Many people on a limited budget cannot afford to invite ALL their friends for an expensive meal afterwards.

We did potluck for our reception. To get in you had to bring your favorite side dish, with the recipe, and any stories behind it, for the couples cookbook. So,ermines I just read the thing

I've been to hundreds of weddings, due to family business and social contacts. Hands-down, the best weddings are the shoestring budget weddings, especially those with potluck receptions. The variety of food pleases all the different pallets, there's usually more than enough food to go around, extra people bring extra food, so that's not a problem, and people are more relaxed and less socially standoffish. Oh, and the bride and groom have more money for a great honeymoon, and down payment on a house, whatever, because they didn't blow it on fancy flowers that will die or a one-use dress that costs half a year's income.
Very nice, and the total opposite of those who want to charge the entire overpriced

I feel that the more over the top the wedding is the more likely it won't last.
I get the feeling that there is a keeping up with the Jones mindset, and playing one upsmanship to all of this wedding planning. A wedding should not be a competition and people should not brag about the its opulence or the amount of money spent.
