Broken: My Short Stories About Literally And Metaphorically Broken Animals

I am Pieter van den Heuvel, a freelance copywriter. On my spare time work as an illustrator.

Inspired by Tim Burton’s short stories and Shaun Tan’s beautiful works I’ve been writing and illustrating books myself. Broken is one of the recent ones.

The book is about broken beings, literally and sometimes metaphorically. I always thought that there is something both sad and cute about animals wearing plaster casts, so I decided to make a story about them. What seems to be an ordinary light-hearted kids’ book, gradually turns into a melancholic story about creatures struggling with broken situation.

It took me about a week to draw all the illustrations and about a month to finish the whole book. It’s completely hand drawn with pencil and colored in with water paint.

The first picture, I might have a weird imagination but was the anteater licking the giraffe's b******e? Still, the book is sad and awesome.

How does an artist make you laugh and cry? I don't know, but Pieter van den Heuvel does it with a lot of poignancy.

I think this book can be for kids. A broken heart is serious business! But this book is definitely Parental Guidance Suggested.

This is brilliant — the illustrations, the copy, the story.
