"There are numerous reasons why a person should consider leaving their job," Lee, who also creates content for Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, told Bored Panda. "For example, if they are surrounded by toxic colleagues (and they've tried to improve the situation by talking to their manager or said colleague but nothing changes), the company provides no continuous personal development opportunities, or their job isn't even something they want to do—maybe they got into it just to live someone else's dream. Or maybe they're offered a great long-term career opportunity elsewhere."

If someone is serious about quitting but aren't quite sure yet, Lee said it would be a good idea to start by simply considering the pros and cons of staying vs. leaving. "You can even write everything down on paper or an Excel sheet for better clarity!"
"Try to do some background checks on the new company if it fits your personal growth needs, financial needs, technical skills, future career goals, company culture (check reviews on Glassdoor, Kununu, and Google)," the career coach advised.
"If still in doubt, accept the invitation to go for an interview (for this, it's important to have a list of questions ready!). Clarify any doubts you may have about the new job or company background."
Lee highlighted that going for an interview doesn't automatically mean you're agreeing to the offer but it can provide valuable information and make your decision a lot easier. "It is just an opportunity for you to have a deeper understanding of the job and whether it suits you, while it gives the recruiter a chance to get to know you better if you suit the job—think of it like going for a first date! It doesn't mean you're gonna get married."

But with that being said, Lee doesn't think that quitting your job on the spot is a smart move. "If you resign too soon but, for example, haven't got sufficient savings to tide you over the next few weeks or months until you find a new job, you are putting yourself in unnecessary stress."

It really doesn't matter if that means being a bartender, a cashier, a hairdresser, an entrepreneur, an engineer, whatever. Your position or salary does not equate to your self-worth. This is a misconception many people have."
Your aim, according to Lee, should be to find a place where you are about 80% happy, leaving the rest 20% for possible minor inconveniences that both you and the company can work on in the future.

Reminds me of a job my son quit (a supervisor gave him a heads up that particular facility would be closing for good in 1 month and told him who to apply to for a new job). For years they had been shutting down production to reboot the system due to some issue that would happen. My son showed them they didn't need to reboot thus saving them a lot of time and trouble. Due to the nature of the business, once he gave notice, standard practice is to escort the now former employee out. As they're doing so, he gets paged to come fix the system. The last time I left a job, I gave them 1 week's notice - they had cut my full-time job (with benefits) to part-time (4 hours/day, no benefits). Hey, they cut my job in half, so I cut the notice in half! The guy who fired me said I would be fine because I lived with my 'boyfriend', completely ignoring that I was paying rent, plus all my own bills, and supporting my son. I waited 3 months, found a new full time job that started in 2 weeks so I had a week off for myself. When I gave them a bare bones resignation, they were shocked that I would "suddenly just quit a great job"! The best part? One month later, the entire engineering department left en masse, then all the principals left, and a year or so later, the office was shut down. It was a high profile architecture/engineering design build firm, and the local office specialized in athletic facilities for professional sports teams (Seattle Seahawks football stadium was one), colleges/universities, even the Olympics. I laughed for days when I heard about it!
I worked for a vet for 7 years, at which time the owner decided to sell. After health issues he had little choice at the time. The new owner, a relief vet who'd been there a while, couldn't stop talking about how he intended to jack prices up with zero warning to clients (we catered to seniors on social security), and bragged about his high turn over rate at his flailing clinic he intended to close an hour away, it saved him money he said. The date of the change over myself and 1 other of the 3 vet techs quit, on the spot. Two months later, the last tech and a receptionist quit. Checked into it 2 or 3 yrs later and the original owner purchased the clinic back. Original owner just couldn't stay away from running his own business, that clinic was his baby, and the guy he sold it to was ruining it.

Some of these are funny and not too unprofessional, but some of them are also rude and unprofessional, I'm not sure if the US has the same kind of thing as the UK's cv's and such, but often times when applying for different jobs you will be asked for references from former employers - if you quit so unprofessionally and rudely, it's going to look bad on your references. So whilst it's so tempting, try to keep it lighthearted and not too unprofessional still if you plan to quit in this kind of way.
The U.S. does. Most white-collar jobs, in my experience, will require three references, and it's really encouraged that at least one of those be a former or current supervisor. In some cases, even if the boss isn't listed as a reference, the potential new job will call for one anyway.

I would laugh at a lot of the meme ones if I got them, but it would be a nightmare for me. My work has a policy that in order to terminate an employee as "resigned", we have to include their resignation letter, which HAS to have their name, the last date worked, etc. If we don't have that or it doesn't include those elements, then we have to either track down the employee and beg them to send it to us, or we have to terminate them as "Job abandonment" (Yeah, I've argued with HR several times and told them that the employees gave me verbal notice and an email saying they were resigning, but my company sucks), which could impact them getting hired again if they applied.
Honestly, I would not want to do most of these, because they just seem childish. I am a big fan of passive aggressive, but most of these are over the top. Nothing like calling in sick with work piled up on your desk and then just never come back :)

So much of this screams of the poor treatment of employees in the US that they resort to these measures. And the normalisation of the "well my boss can fire me because he doesn't like my hair colour, so I'll just quit with zero notice, screw my coworkers" (while simultaneously complaining about other coworkers before them who have ghosted on the job leaving them with an increased workload) is just mind-blowing. Worked at a place for several years. I got hurt on the job but was forced to come back to work even though I could hardly walk and in horrible pain. Not once was I ever written up in the years prior but within 30 days I had 11 write-ups because they were trying to get me to quit. This doesn’t quality, but I was the Director at a daycare facility, and I had an employee, a teacher, quit, not because of something I did, but because of something I didn’t do: she quit because I wouldn’t promote her to be my assistant, even though she had no administrative experience which this job required. It was a very demanding position, I already had an assistant, and we were very successful. Luckily for me, my office manager and I had a great relationship, and she gave me a heads up, so when I wished the employee a good weekend on Friday and said “see you Monday”, I wasn’t blindsided when she said it was her last day. I wished her well; I promoted her assistant to teacher and hired a new assistant for that class. Sometimes it cuts both ways.
I get it, low paid workers will just up and leave. That’s kinda their right but I’d implore anyone that fancies walking out without notice to think about it. I was made redundant when I was 19, I took it on the chin and left my (ex) managers office without a cuss word or by ranting at him. Seven years later I sat down in an interview at a completely different company and there he is, on the interview panel and he remembers me and my level-headed approach to being let go. They offered me the job but the pay & conditions weren’t up to what I been led to believe they would be so I respectfully turned them down. You never know when you’ll cross paths with those you leave behind, beware, it could come back to bite you on the a**e if you treat them poorly.

now, i feel so incompetent. the last place i resigned from required an exit interview - a written one so actually a written response to their questions regarding the dept. however, i did write a three page essay with bullet points and key words designed to get the director's attention.
I had a job where I did everything asked of me plus more. Never took lunches or breaks. Asked for more hours and they hired more people. I quit after that.

I quit my big box dog grooming job because they tried to change my hours with a single day's notice. Since that job is appointment based, my state requires they give us at least 6 weeks notice (so we have time to take care of already scheduled appointments before the schedule change). Oh, and TWO groomers somehow had to keep the salon open 8am-9 pm 7 days a week. So I gave them a whopping 2 days notice. Had I not had some of my favourite dogs scheduled for those two days that I wanted to say goodbye to, I would have quit on the spot.

I bought MMs that were personzlied, saying 'I quit' and '2 weeks notice' and put them on donuts for my boss. We got along, so I had warned her, but I did also hand them out to others, lol. But last one I didn't give 2 weeks notice, just that day - and they took over a month to pay me that last damn paycheck. They loved to screw around with people and their money.
My best quit was this. I worked as a technician in a car dealer that had no computerized routing/tracking system for vehicles. All commercial options were tens of thousands of dollars PER YEAR. I spent 3 hours on what was then Google Doc creating one. Went in the next day early to see my boss (actually liked him. He asked why I was early and I answered "two reasons". Here is the first I said and showed him what I built. He was overjoyed then asked whats the second reason. I only came it to give you that as a going-away present, and to quit because this place sucks the life out of me. All the joy drained from his face. We shook hands and I left. Yes, I know I could have offered a teaser and charged for the routing/tracking system I built but that's not me and why I'll never be wealthy.
The presentation of most of these resignation notices are so poorly executed that the employers are probably glad they didn't have to fire them.

The U.S. does. Most white-collar jobs, in my experience, will require three references, and it's really encouraged that at least one of those be a former or current supervisor. In some cases, even if the boss isn't listed as a reference, the potential new job will call for one anyway.
Load More Replies... I would laugh at a lot of the meme ones if I got them, but it would be a nightmare for me. My work has a policy that in order to terminate an employee as "resigned", we have to include their resignation letter, which HAS to have their name, the last date worked, etc. If we don't have that or it doesn't include those elements, then we have to either track down the employee and beg them to send it to us, or we have to terminate them as "Job abandonment" (Yeah, I've argued with HR several times and told them that the employees gave me verbal notice and an email saying they were resigning, but my company sucks), which could impact them getting hired again if they applied.
Honestly, I would not want to do most of these, because they just seem childish. I am a big fan of passive aggressive, but most of these are over the top. Nothing like calling in sick with work piled up on your desk and then just never come back :)
You've never worked in one of these environments. Some hostile work environments are the equivalent of being in an abusive relationship. Some ARE just sophomoric and unprofessional. They thought they were being funny. Emphasis on thought.

I have gained a lot of confidence in myself. I have learned, even more than I already had before, how to smile through adversity... I have learned what qualities I want to embody as a good leader. I have also learned what qualities I want to avoid completely." She got the message-and even more so, when she found out I was hired at my new job, before I even quit the old one, at a higher position and pay than she ever would have given me! She was so shocked, and so mad! It was glorious!! 😈😊
So much of this screams of the poor treatment of employees in the US that they resort to these measures. And the normalisation of the "well my boss can fire me because he doesn't like my hair colour, so I'll just quit with zero notice, screw my coworkers" (while simultaneously complaining about other coworkers before them who have ghosted on the job leaving them with an increased workload) is just mind-blowing. And yes, this is another US-bashing comment, because at this point the country really should have gotten it's act together.

Not once was I ever written up in the years prior but within 30 days I had 11 write-ups because they were trying to get me to quit. Found a new job and instead of opening the store at 5:00 a.m. one day, I went to the fax and copy store and fax them my immediate resignation for being d*cks. Then went to my new awesome job. I LOVED my property management job. But soon it changed, and I was losing height to the grinding pressure. After abusive boss yelled that his DOG could do my job, I spent a week painstakingly describing in great detail exactly how to perform every aspect of my job. The stack of papers was 4" tall. On Friday, I stuck a Post It on the top addressed to his dog, and never went back. Tuesday I had a new job paying 25% more. No word on if Stella grew thumbs...
This doesn’t quality, but I was the Director at a daycare facility, and I had an employee, a teacher, quit, not because of something I did, but because of something I didn’t do: she quit because I wouldn’t promote her to be my assistant, even though she had no administrative experience which this job required. It was a very demanding position, I already had an assistant, and we were very successful. Luckily for me, my office manager and I had a great relationship, and she gave me a heads up, so when I wished the employee a good weekend on Friday and said “see you Monday”, I wasn’t blindsided when she said it was her last day. I wished her well; I promoted her assistant to teacher and hired a new assistant for that class. Sometimes it cuts both ways.
I get it, low paid workers will just up and leave. That’s kinda their right but I’d implore anyone that fancies walking out without notice to think about it. I was made redundant when I was 19, I took it on the chin and left my (ex) managers office without a cuss word or by ranting at him. Seven years later I sat down in an interview at a completely different company and there he is, on the interview panel and he remembers me and my level-headed approach to being let go. They offered me the job but the pay & conditions weren’t up to what I been led to believe they would be so I respectfully turned them down. You never know when you’ll cross paths with those you leave behind, beware, it could come back to bite you on the a**e if you treat them poorly.

now, i feel so incompetent. the last place i resigned from required an exit interview - a written one so actually a written response to their questions regarding the dept. however, i did write a three page essay with bullet points and key words designed to get the director's attention.
I had a job where I did everything asked of me plus more. Never took lunches or breaks. Asked for more hours and they hired more people. I quit after that.
I don't blame you. It's even worse when they cut your hours to hire people at a lower wage. That's infuriating.

I recently quit a part time cash job with my cell phone in my pocket playing Johnny Paychecks very own TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT, AS I WALKED INTO THE BOSS'S OFFICE. I overheard him saying to someone on a call that he'd rather be beaten by a boxer than to have to deal with these pussies and dykes he hired..-his words..He ran a armed security company which hired only active law enforcement or combat military veterans for cash money..we had a Navy SEAL, 2 Active swat deputies, an Air Force PJ and a Retired Army Ranger female that was gorgeous and very capable..also not a lesbian..Not a single pussy, and dyke?? Still used today? Anyhow she could beat his ass all day long and still put in a full shift .. The boss?? Worked in the Armory while serving his one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year with the Army National Guard..An officer but yet NOT a true gentleman..liked the job very much but he chapped my ass saying g what he did so me and Mr Paycheck walked in to say hi...thanks
I gave a 2 week notice and the owner of the company fired me 3 days later. Iam all for walking out and saying “f**k you” as I slam the door.
I quit my big box dog grooming job because they tried to change my hours with a single day's notice. Since that job is appointment based, my state requires they give us at least 6 weeks notice (so we have time to take care of already scheduled appointments before the schedule change). Oh, and TWO groomers somehow had to keep the salon open 8am-9 pm 7 days a week. So I gave them a whopping 2 days notice. Had I not had some of my favourite dogs scheduled for those two days that I wanted to say goodbye to, I would have quit on the spot.
I never quit anything. Was let go once (in the proper way to do things, although the reason was just stupid and I hate that man still today with a passion) and since then, I've been self-employed. It has its downsides, but damn does it feel good, too.
I bought MMs that were personzlied, saying 'I quit' and '2 weeks notice' and put them on donuts for my boss. We got along, so I had warned her, but I did also hand them out to others, lol. But last one I didn't give 2 weeks notice, just that day - and they took over a month to pay me that last damn paycheck. They loved to screw around with people and their money.
My best quit was this. I worked as a technician in a car dealer that had no computerized routing/tracking system for vehicles. All commercial options were tens of thousands of dollars PER YEAR. I spent 3 hours on what was then Google Doc creating one. Went in the next day early to see my boss (actually liked him. He asked why I was early and I answered "two reasons". Here is the first I said and showed him what I built. He was overjoyed then asked whats the second reason. I only came it to give you that as a going-away present, and to quit because this place sucks the life out of me. All the joy drained from his face. We shook hands and I left. Yes, I know I could have offered a teaser and charged for the routing/tracking system I built but that's not me and why I'll never be wealthy.
The presentation of most of these resignation notices are so poorly executed that the employers are probably glad they didn't have to fire them.
I just don't buy most of these. The same theme turns up too many times.
