Student Shares A Compilation Of Various Crazy Things Her 70+ Y.O. Physics Professor Did, And It’s Awesome
We all know what a huge impact a good professor can have on the subject they are teaching. Even the dullest material can become entertaining if the educator is teaching with passion, drive and gets a little bit of fun involved in the process. This is exactly what Tidewater Community College physics professor David Wright does. He is known among his students as a fun educator who’s willing to go the extra mile to keep them interested in his teaching.
Recently a physics professor went viral for his unconventional and entertaining teaching methods

Recently, one of his students named Erica posted a compilation video of all the crazy things Wright has done during his lectures. The video quickly went viral and now has over 4 million views and nearly 800k likes. One thing is clear, the professor likes unconventional teaching methods and people love it!

Wright who is in his 70’s and has been teaching at TCC since 1974 loves to demonstrate how physics works in real life. “If you just memorize all of this stuff, it would be a torturous class, if they get the key idea then everything else becomes natural,” he says.

That’s why he makes his classes interactive. He uses toys, impressive experiments, and fun activities to demonstrate how the theories work. From teaching about liquid nitrogen by making ice cream to explaining the surface-tension by lying down on a nail bed, Wright never seizes to surprise his class.

“If I don’t get excited about the subject, my students definitely won’t. If I can get people excited about science, that would be amazing,” the professor explains. Wright says that he hopes to get students thinking that everything in life relates to physics.
Y’all need to see this video collage of all the crazy things my Physics Professor did this semester😭. He’s in his 70s and is still doing all of this for us🥺💛 pic.twitter.com/JaICjzVB5I

Wright, who was given one of only 11 Outstanding Faculty Awards by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in 2002, is not only known for being a professor. He also served as a science consultant and scriptwriter for the NASA Science Files television show and also performs physics demonstrations at theme parks, he has even been on Saturday Night Live back in the day.
So I just emailed him letting him know he’s gone viral😭 we’ll see what he says. pic.twitter.com/AL8q1HuLL0

Share on FacebookIt makes me happy when I see teachers taking joy in what they teach and who they teach it to. This man is a gem. Hats off to Professor Wright!
This reminds me of my current science teacher, though I’m in bio not physics. She clearly loves to teach and always gets so excited when she sees us enjoying it too. She does tons of hands on labs and is very supportive which makes one of my favorite subjects into an amazing class. She also has a great sense of humor and a knack for coming up the most most hilariously cringe-worthy science puns. So much more fun than I few years ago when I had a teacher who clearly hated his job. Not only did his classes consist of an hour of sitting at a desk while he rambled in with a boring slide show, but he also tended to get angry about his job and pay and would frequently take it out on us students for the smallest little things ex: tapping a pencil noiselessly on the back of my hand because moving helps me think.
So having lots of pracs/labs helps you understand the science? I'm learning to be a chem teacher and creating labs is so hard!
Load More Replies...I wish more teachers were like this... some of mine are straight up boring.
I used to have a teacher like this who taught history and drama in England. He would at any chance he got get us to act out whatever we were learning in history. One of the best I can remember was when we were learning about the Battle of Waterloo. He divided the class into two half of us were the British the other half the French. We then went out onto the school playing field and spent the class hurling water balloons at each other while he gave a blow by blow description of what happened during the battle. It was absolutely brilliant. Especially as it was a really hot sunny day.
So reminds me of my highschool physics teacher. I've never forget the gleam of happiness he had when he taught us how not to fall off the bicycle using angular momentum. May he RIP!
Aww, reminds me of my physics teacher from last year. He did tons of stuff like this, was funny, and was a teacher whom is easy to talk to.
It is both sad and inspiring that this phenomenal teacher is still doing his amazing work at age 70+.
My college Chemistry teacher was like this. The first day of class he exploded three balloons, one filled with hydrogen, one filled with oxygen and one filled with a mix. it shook the whole building =) He also demonstrated electron surfing by microwaving his daughter's Brittany Spears CD. Best teacher ever.
