September is fully upon us, dear Pandas! There’s a bit of a chill in the air. The leaves are gently falling (though not if you live in Florida or anywhere else really warm). Cafes are rolling out their pumpkin spice-themed drinks. And for many students across the world, the month has heralded the end of our glorious summer and the start of the new school year.
What that means is a whole harvest of hilarious and relatable Tumblr posts and memes about being a student. Education is all about improving our skills, forging connections with other people, and trying to get a tiny bit closer to the truth about, well, pretty much everything.
However, getting at the truth of things, whether you’re in school or college (or even at work), can be more difficult than it would seem at first glance. Learning, whether in class or when you’re an adult, means constantly staying curious about things, trying out your hand at new hobbies and interests, and questioning what you find online. This can be even harder when you realize that even the adults teaching you can make mistakes.
There are different words for the languages spoken in China. 中文 is kind of a catch-all for any language spoken in China. 粤语 refers specifically to Cantonese. 普通话 is often translated as Mandarin, but literally means "the common language." If the slide said 我不会说中文, then "I don't speak Chinese" would be the best translation.
Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow and the founder of the Free-Range Kids movement, explained to me during a previous interview how to challenge authority figures in a friendly way if we believe that what they’re saying might be wrong. It’s as applicable to students in their communication with teachers as it is to employees who think their managers might have missed an important detail (or two!). Diplomacy and manners are incredibly important here; there’s no room for aggression because the end goal isn’t to get into an argument.
My uncle ran a funeral home. Yeah, you're not doing that job if you don't understand algebra. How long before a viewing do you pull a body out of refrigerated storage so there isn't condensation on it when the family is there? How long can you hold the service while the family flies in relatives from across the country before either decomp or freezer burn sets in? You better not just guestimate that stuff.
At the core of challenging anyone who might be spreading falsehoods lies diplomacy. You might not like what your local authority figure is saying. You might believe that they’re spouting utter nonsense. However, instead of being combative from the get-go, it’s best to calm down and try to find some common ground. Your mission should be to learn something together with them, not to prove that you’re the best and most knowledgeable person in the classroom/office.
I agree completely. We always talk about symbolism in class and I just think, "I bet if we came up to the author and asked if that was symbolism they would say it was not intended." That's what would happen to me if I wrote a story anyways.
“The key is to discover things together. If something sounds strange or unlikely, respond with curiosity—ask the person to tell you more, and how they found this information out, and where you should go if you want to delve into it further,” Lenore explained to Bored Panda.
I mindlessly munched most of a box of chocolate covered espresso beans once while studying, not thinking about the caffeine factor, and afterwards my heart was beating so hard I almost took myself to the hospital.

Someone told me that is an easy "poor man's" test for ADHD. Give the individual a couple of cups of coffee and see if it calms them down. If it does they have ADHD, and can likely treat it with coffee or other caffeine sources. Don't know if it's true

I invented a drink that my friends named "the warcrime". You make it by brewing an extra strong black coffee, pouring a bang energy into that, and washing it down with mountain dew. I got 13 assignments done in one hour and I'm pretty sure I saw shrimp colors and/or the shadow dimension

I used to make espresso in a coffee pot and drink it like regular coffee, having upwards of 4 pots a day and I didn't even go to college. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure my unusually low, near comatose level bood pressure is the only thing that saved me

I never checked my grades once during my AA or BA. I had a 3.91 GPA but the stress of seeing my grade was too great so I just ignored it. During my MA I finally started reading comments left by my professors and talking to them about my papers and stuff. I told one of my professors that I appreciated their advice one this or that and said how I regret not ever checking my grades before. They were shocked. They asked what I would have done if I had been failing a class and didn't know, I told him you always kind of know but if it had happened it would have only confirmed my deepest suspicion, that I screwed up and was a failure. I reassured him that I wouldn't have taken it hard because I loved to be proved right. He was so conflicted between laughing and worrying I was being serious. 100% serious. LOL.

According to Lenore, it’s not “cruel or crazy” to believe that someone out there might “have their facts wrong,” as absolutely everyone has made mistakes or been wrong about something in the past. Unless someone is very deliberately trying to deceive or manipulate you by spreading lies, it’s best not to get angry if you know for a fact that they’ve got a piece of info wrong.
Does it count if you're utter ineptitude made the teacher cry?? I didn't like fractions as a kid.
“Ever since the Age of Enlightenment, humans have realized that the best way to get closer to the truth is by saying something out loud and seeing if it stands up to scrutiny. If not—hooray. We are one step closer to the truth because we've just jettisoned a misconception,” Lenore shared with Bored Panda.

“If it turns out that you do find some information that contradicts what the other person—your teacher or boss or anyone—has stated as true, again, the best approach is not confrontation. It's assuming that the other person didn't mean to steer you wrong,” Lenore said that we should seize the learning opportunities provided instead of being aggressive in our desire to be right.

“So if you bring in information that contradicts the person, don't say, ‘SEE??? YOU WERE WRONG!' Say something more like, ‘I was so interested in what you were talking about that I did some research and now I'm a little confused. Can we look at this together?'" Lenore gave an example of how to diplomatically challenge others.
the trick is to pick a career that you can tolerate that pays well. hardly anyone likes their job, may as well make $$$ so you can enjoy the rest of your life when you're not at work. I'm typically a pretty optimistic dude but that "do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life" crap is a lie.
“Being accusatory only makes people defensive. So don't be rude, be engaged. This works in the classroom, in the office, and pretty much everywhere,” Lenore said that once people get defensive, the potential learning opportunity that you had might be lost. Instead, aim for helping create an environment that facilitates learning, not one that increases resentment and clashes between everyone.
And even if he did, it's behind a pay wall. Your professor won't spend any money to actually read it.
The computers at my job still have a floppy drive and can take 20 min to open a google drive link and run the powerpoint. I hate them so much

What I hate is journals with word limits who then have reviewers or the editor ask you to add a s**t ton of explanatory material while demanding you somehow magically stay within word count guidelines

I think it was a pelican that shat on me from a great height because it nearly knocked me out cold. The hugest, sloppiest, globule hit me so hard on my shoulder and whacked me back to reality.
