Plumbing is one of those things that is easy to take for granted. We normally don't notice how much of a role it plays in our daily life until it stops working.

The fact that we can simply walk up to a faucet and wash our face under warm water every time we turn the handle is all thanks to plumbers.

So let's scroll through the subreddit r/Plumbing and check out what they go through on the job to make it happen.

After all, the modern lifestyle we currently enjoy would be impossible without the knowledge and skills these professionals possess.

A few years back, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared plumbers to be one of the most important frontline health workers in the world.

With their knowledge and expertise, plumbers design systems that give us access to clean water sources. That clean water can be used for everything from practicing proper hygiene to sanitizing operating rooms.

Sustainable health is not possible without clean water.

"Fresh water is in finite supply on Earth and as the key to life is, without question, our planet’s most precious natural resource," the WHO said in a statement.

In the near future, plumbers are going to be as important as ever. "If we do not alter our historical approaches to water supply expansion, we will only be able to provide a fraction of the world’s water demand in the next few decades," the WHO continued.

"By 2050, the world population is estimated to increase by 3 billion people, with 100 percent of this growth expected to be concentrated in urban areas. Within 20 years, the projected demand for water will increase between 40 and 50 percent. Although it was universally agreed that the water challenges ahead of us are daunting, the good news is it is not insurmountable."

But plumbing isn't only for the collection, transportation, and dispersal of clean water. It is also used to remove liquids and waste.

Plumbers ensure that waste disposal runs in an efficient and safe manner. This makes it possible to separate your clean water from harmful contaminants.

When plumbing is done poorly, it could allow for those contaminants to leak into undesirable areas, posing a danger to anyone nearby.

Currently there are around 480,600 plumbers in the United States, but this number is expected to grow.

CareerExplorer rates plumbers with a B employability rating, meaning this career should provide good opportunities for the foreseeable future. Over the next 10 years, the US might need 81,900 plumbers. That number is based on 75,200 additional plumbers, and the retirement of 6,700 existing professionals.

That is one way to check for leaks. Not the best way or safest way, luckily there was no buildup of gas. Time to replace that old valve. Household pressure is quite low, 7WC, or roughly 4oz per square inch.

It's actually good that it's burning. If it wasn't, it would still be leaking, and the gas would build up until someone flicked a switch, and sparked it, and *boom* danger bad gas explosion.

This isn’t that dangerous as long as there’s no other issues. The gas line should ONLY contain gas and therefore there’s no oxygen to allow combustion in the lines. Reminds me of chemistry classes - lighting the gas taps on the benches rather than bothering to get a Bunsen burner.

Oh hell... I'm not sure taking a photo is the right thing to do here. But, as I hope this was taken by a professional, I'm sure there is no real danger (yet) or else they would have done something else instead.

Unfortunately there are plenty of professionals who are irresponsible or downright idiots, and plenty of professionals who don't have all the knowledge they're supposed to have.

"Okay, someone will be responsible as quickly as possible, we recommend that you evacuate the building as quickly as possible, making sure not to open or close any windows and do not hung up the phone, just lay it down, or if it's a cell phone, take it with you, I will hang up on my end" Haven't used that script in 7 years, but I still remember it.

Had a lady call in when I still worked for the gas company, saying her pilots wouldn't stay lit. Turns out she had about 30 pinholes in her gas line and she kept trying to light them.

The fire can't jump into the pipes. There is no oxygen. It's a completely fireproof environment, until you introduce oxygen. Then run.

Wow! Those kind of turnoffs must surely be illegal for gas. Or is this a gas leak into a water line? I would calmly recommend heading for the nearest exit.

Never flush anything, except toilet paper. Make sure your toilet paper breaks down in water; that's what it's supposed to do. Every decade or so a tp manufacturer comes out with a product that "won't fall apart when wet!" Do not use it. Do not flush it. Return it to the manufacturer. Or, you will be paying a plumber to snake it out for you. (Extra story: I couldn't flush t a m p o n s in my toilet because there was a big sag in the s e w e r line. $$$)

Last think you want is a skylight shaft in a bathing room. Hot steam from the shower will rise up into the shaft (since it's the highest point) then with nowhere to go will condense all over it and promote mildew growth.
