they look darker in the middle and top of the patch (where the dog's skin matches the dark spot) and lighter at the lower edges (where the skin turns light again) as the ends (tips) of the dark fur continues to grow down and blends into the light fur. You can see the reverse of this at the of the lower leg patch where the ends of the light fur grow down into the dark patch of fur.

Yes, he does. However, those markings are not possible in Great Danes. That pattern/colors is not in their genetic code.
