Millennials are choosing pets over kids for a ton of reasons, from cost (an average of $3085 a year to raise a dog, $12-14,000 for a child) to freedom, basic companionship and not having to wipe their butts.
While not everyone thinks that this is a good thing and sure, the two things are so vastly different that the comparison is a stretch. But after a busy day at a job that doesn't offer the same security or benefits that your parents grew accustomed to, what would you prefer to come home to? A little fluffy bundle of joy who just wants to play and cuddle, or a demanding child that needs to be cooked for, cleaned after, homework and so on?
Obvious, when you think about it! Same. And before anyone starts blaming parents for not controlling their children, sometimes they just can't. Take my little brothers for example. When someone picks up a bad habit from school that they think is cool, then have fun getting it out of them. Time outs, groundings, and spankings don't seem to work either. I'm only a teen, (which in our current society means very little anyhow) but from what I see, parenthood is hell. I will NEVER willingly have a kid.

Why would you vote for cats over dogs? You don't have to take cats outside, they clean themselves, they're quieter, they're cuter (sorry), they're actually really sweet. Everyone who hates cats just doesn't know how to act around them. They like spending time in the same room as you, just not always in your lap because that's not how they are. They show their love in different ways. They go without blinking for longer because they don't need to blink as often.
I grew up with dogs, but since I started living on my own with a cat I've really realized how much of a cat person I am. I feel like my parent's dog can be annoying with how much attention he wants and I HATE how he begs for food. My cat is mostly quiet and adorable. She's a bit shy, but I don't mind her having to get used to people, and I understand it a lot more than the constantly happy-to-see-anyone attitude a lot of dogs have. I also find dogs to be generally more smelly for some reason? I definitely think a lot of people who didn't grow up with cats don't understand how they act and show affection, assuming that because they're not as excitable that they must be really distant.

Tbh I think cats are GREAT pets. They are playful, loving, and they are great cuddle buddies. Why are dogs "mans best friend" when cats are just as good? The media makes it seem like dogs are angels (which they are) and cats are lazy devils(which they aren't)? Sure cats scratch but dogs bite. Cats scratch because they're scared or provoked. If you've ever been scratched by a cat it's probably because you somehow scared them. I'm NOT saying cats are better than dogs, I'm saying they are EQUAL. Why do cat people have to HATE dogs and dog people HATE cats. You just like this animal that doesn't mean you have to hate the other one. I love both. I wonder if 'man's best friend' mainly centres around the fact that dogs are more useful to us as a species - guide dogs, sniffer dogs etc and have been since we were living in caves. What people want in pets is different and I agree, it's a shame that people get so bothered by which is 'better' when it's personal preference and/or lifestyle factors. If you live in a city apartment it’s a no-brainer. Cats are much easier to care for. A dog in the city….. taking the dog for a walk and scooping up a handful of s**t before going to work in the morning is not a great way to start the day.

Not everyone was made to want children. Don't get me wrong - I love my nieces, nephews, and god-children... love spending time with them, and I love sending them home to their parents! I also love my dog. Don't tell the kids, but she is my favorite one. ;)

Baby boomers just don’t get it because they grew up not knowing that child rearing is a choice. It was just what everyone did. Parents are jealous of childfree people and they want everyone else to be as miserable as them. A 30 year old mom looks 42 and struggles to wrangle her ugly, sticky toddler. Then she sees a vibrant 35 year old woman who looks 28 smiling with her spouse and having fun relaxing and of course the mom is jealous. Every person has the right to decide if they want children, pets etc. You don't need to worry about what I think on the matter or comment even once.
I have zero inclination to try to "sell" anyone on having kids. In fact, I think sterilization should be more accessible And encouraged for people who know they don't want to be parents. Currently, it's difficult for younger men and women to have these procedures and I think it's irresponsible of doctors to create these barriers. What child benefits from an unwilling parent?
I'm glad my mom shares the same opinion on not having kids. Her support means a lot to me. One day I want to get couple of dogs from shelter and give them warm home.

I generally support those who choose not to have kids because they aware that they will have huge amount of stress that will potentially abuse or neglect the child if they have one. Same applied to pet owner. Maybe it's just my concern, but if we are getting influenced by all the defences by these parents and nonparents then I am worried it will affect our behavior toward kids and pet. They've done nothing wrong please don't blame it on them. Let's just support each other no matter what we choose.
Personally having to choose a pet over a child is, in my opinion, the best birth control in the world. The earth is dark, full of hate, lies and on the brink of destruction with overpopulation so yeah I will also stay with my pets as my babies. Also cheaper to maintain, even if the vet bills are higher than doctor bills.

I love and adore dogs passionately. I love all animals with a passion, but dogs are my favourite! However, I must say that treating dogs as human children is actually bad for them; according to someone who actually lived in the world of animal care and vets, babying dogs and treating them like human children is bad for them. They may be better than humans, but they are not humans and need to be respected and treated as such in order to be healthy and happy. Of course, love is also necessary for dogs and they can still be your best friend and your soulmate, but babying them like children is bad for them…

I hate this psychology. Not because I love kids and don't love pets, if anything, it's the other way round(at 3 pets and 0 kids currently :P) but it's BECAUSE I love pets that I recognize they're not my kids - they're adults of a different species that have needs different from that of a human baby. Just because something will forever stay small enough for you to pick up and cuddle doesn't make it your toy to dress up and treat like 'aw oh my poor little sweet baby' forever, that's just cruel. Now don't get me wrong, I have seen people calling their pets babies for whom it was just a cute name and they still made sure their pets got everything they needed as animals, but way, way more often have I seen people treating their 'furry babies' like dolls they can forever dress up, cuddle, feed fancy and expect they'll be jumping happy. And then ooo shocker your 'furry baby' bites someone, doesn't know how to behave in general and then dies young because of wrong diet and lack of exercise.
Just call things what they are. If you want a kid, get a kid. If you don't want a kid but want a dog, that's fine, just get a dog. If you want a toy for your own amusement, get a Barbie or a furby or whatever, don't torture another living being.

Hi guys, I have a question and welcome on a healthy debate... One day we will all be old and by that time how do we maintain our daily life if we did not have children? Most children will left us when they have their own family, but with them there will be someone we can rely on if anything happened to us (lets just assume parenting done right), but if we don't have, how do we do it? Pet-people and People-people, two different species. I´m glad there is always someone loving a dog, a cat, etc.
I have 4 kids myself and I agree that it's like herding cats at times! However, my husband and I had serious discussions about how we wanted to parent and why we wanted to do things a certain way and what our goals were for our kids (basically become the best versions of themselves). So when we had 4 kids in 5 years we already had a game plan. We had our "kid training program" laid out, in broad strokes anyway. The biggest problem today is that parents don't take time to train, and I mean TRAIN, their kids how to behave. When they're 1-2 years old, they are the worst because they don't know any better. But they are still smarter than those adorable doggos and can be trained to behave. As they continue to grow, that training can be built upon. One of our guiding principles has been to treat our kids like the unique people they are and always try to bring out the best in them.
I don't think what you've said has been worded very well, but I can see how having poorly behaving children,because the parents haven't taken the time to teach them correct behaviours, puts others off the idea of kids. However you can't say that having well trained kids is better than having a pet(s) because that insinuates that a life without kids of your own is less fulfilling, Which simply isn't true.

Load More Replies... Hi guys, I have a question and welcome on a healthy debate... One day we will all be old and by that time how do we maintain our daily life if we did not have children? Most children will left us when they have their own family, but with them there will be someone we can rely on if anything happened to us (lets just assume parenting done right), but if we don't have, how do we do it? I'm not bashing your preference, I wanna know you guys opinion on this for better understanding : )
Having children simply so you're not lonely as a senior citizen is short sighted and selfish. There is NO guarantee that 8f you have children, they will support you, or even be in contact with you. Children grow up unto into autonomous adults: they live by their own choices, not yours.

I have 4 kids myself and I agree that it's like herding cats at times! However, my husband and I had serious discussions about how we wanted to parent and why we wanted to do things a certain way and what our goals were for our kids (basically become the best versions of themselves). So when we had 4 kids in 5 years we already had a game plan. We had our "kid training program" laid out, in broad strokes anyway. The biggest problem today is that parents don't take time to train, and I mean TRAIN, their kids how to behave. When they're 1-2 years old, they are the worst because they don't know any better. But they are still smarter than those adorable doggos and can be trained to behave. As they continue to grow, that training can be built upon. One of our guiding principles has been to treat our kids like the unique people they are and always try to bring out the best in them.
I don't think what you've said has been worded very well, but I can see how having poorly behaving children,because the parents haven't taken the time to teach them correct behaviours, puts others off the idea of kids. However you can't say that having well trained kids is better than having a pet(s) because that insinuates that a life without kids of your own is less fulfilling, Which simply isn't true.

Also, regardless of how you feel, humans are also animals.

Load More Replies... I'm childless and lived with my sister for 3 months when my youngest niece was under a year old and my eldest niece was 4 so I witnessed the day to day role of parenting and it was terrible. I couldn't wait to get home to my dog and cat and back to a peaceful life
Load More Replies... UGH GOD STOP IT. Just stop. YOU might be gratified having children, that doesn't mean it's right for everyone else! I hate this idea that parents like you have, that somehow people without children spend 24 hours a day partying and not giving a s**t about anyone else. Guess what? ALL adults have responsibilities! It's not a 24 hour party because I didn't decide to shove a kid out of my crotch.
