When I worked at Barnes & Noble I would get that kind of question from customers ALL THE TIME.

My school library does something like this. "I don't remember the title but there was a girl in a dress on the cover." And many many more....
This is also true of bookshops, this really happens, and they expect you to know what it was, and to have it right there and then
But there is nothing better than the feeling of handing them the book that they have given you 2-3 obscure/generic bits of information on! E.g. I think it has a donut on the cover... (One of the easier ones!)

This happens outside of libraries and bookstores. Friend: "you know that book. It has to do with this guy and he kills people. Or something like that." Me: "0_o" Friend: "I know you know what I'm talking about." Me: "I'm not playing charades without the hand movements."

As someone who worked in a bookstore I can't tell you how amazing this is. We used to get questions all the time....it was blue....and like 2 years ago it was on this table here. FML.
What a sensitive and humorous way to get the message across to patrons. I wish I'd thought of it or come across it 20 years ago. A1 for thinking outside the box.
I at least try to give a fairly decent summary of books I'm looking for but I can't always find them even online. I'm currently been looking for a book series about cheerleaders but the only thing I can remember about it is this one cheerleader gives up cheering to take ballet with a new girl. It mentioned a giant frozen yogurt sundae called a strawberry mountain and one of the ballet moves is called "picking cherries". Sound familiar?
I worked at a chain bookstore for 4 years - this was at least 1/2 the requests.
OK...have my own admission. After many years of not going to a library, it was in the mid-90's when I walked into our local library and asked where the card catalogues were. I will be OK if you all publicly humiliate me. I own it. lol
What is a card catalogue? No public humiliation just not sure we had them where I live...

Last year near Valentine's Day, my library had a display of wrapped books. It said "go home with a blind date". The books had the genre on them and a vague description.
