These Sand Sculptures Formed By Strong Winds Eroding Frozen Sand

These Sand Sculptures Formed By Strong Winds Eroding Frozen Sand

Mike_ZzZzZ Report

Some people get so hooked on searching the beach for treasures that it turns into their hobby. Or something even more serious.

Take Gail Browne, for example. She is one of many artists and collectors who have succumbed to the lure of the sands in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The fisherman's village is a summer resort and a world-famous art colony where generations of painters have come to capture the elusive Cape Cod light.

Browne and her friend Amy Heller, a fellow artist who has been combing the beaches since she was a child, are inspired in their work by the natural beauty of Cape Cod as well as the treasures they uncover on its beaches, then display in their homes. The two women collaborated on a 2020 book that shares their beachcombing experiences as well as those of four other artist-collectors: 'Lost and Found: Time, Tide, and Treasures.' And last October, the Cape Cod Museum of Art also staged an exhibition about them.

Browne likes to approach the shoreline an hour before low tide, the time seasoned beachcombers believe to be the best for scanning around seaweed, rocks, and shells for a glint of man-made artifacts.

The thousands of relics she has uncovered so far are like portals into the past: 1700s English transferware shards, fishermen’s pipes, 19th-century clay marbles, a bronze oil lamp. You name it.

My Friend Found A Bottle Post On The Beach From A 5-Year-Old Boy, And Sends This To Him

My Friend Found A Bottle Post On The Beach From A 5-Year-Old Boy, And Sends This To Him

""Hi Mathias,
Thank you for your letter! We are two girls who got very happy when we found your bottle on the beach in Løkken, where we are currently on vacation. If you look on the map which we drew you can see how far your bottle traveled. It is about 277 km in a straight line. We found the bottle on the 25th of june. So it must have taken it 12 days to reach Denmark. That is about 1 km/h which is the same speed as a land turtle walking. Our names are Mischa and Rowan. Rowan is 26 from Bristol in England and Mischa is 21 and lives in Århus in Denmark. If you look on the map you can see an arrow that points towards England. Rowan is working in the British army. Mischa wants to be an architecht and draw big houses. What do you wanna become when you grow up?. You can answer us if you want on email xxxxxx.

Best regards Rowan and Mischa.
P.S. The sweets are for you and your friends in the kindergarten. Can you guess what flag is on them?"

These pieces of strangers’ homes and lives also artfully fill shelves, tables, and windowsills in her nearby townhouse, reflecting her own memories and stories.

Some territories are more generous than others, and Provincetown is one of those places.

Its harbor basically served as the town dump until the 1930s. "Everyone threw their junk into the harbor. It was pretty nasty," Browne said. "It all settled down, and what didn’t rot stayed behind and got covered up. Tides and wind shift it, and that uncovers it."

Provincetown's period as a major whaling and fishing center has also contributed to these riches of the deep.

As you can see, all of these relics are beautiful on their own, but when massed into bowls or jars, or displayed on shelves, the objects can become the focal point of a room, and a history lesson for anyone who will listen.

No wonder collecting things from the sand has a long history. But the first appearance of the word "beachcombers" in print was in Herman Melville's Omoo (1847). The text described Europeans living in South Pacific islands, "combing" the beach and nearby water for flotsam, jetsam, or anything else they could use or trade.

Unfortunately, in recent decades, the flotsam and jetsam of our beach strandlines have become dominated by plastic litter, from bottles to bags and fishing nets to everyday items such as cigarette lighters, toothbrushes, and printer cartridges.

Marine trash is a global problem of unimaginable scale and consequence, both to the animals that live in the sea and to ourselves. So if you do venture out to comb a beach, a good habit to develop would be to pick up one or two not-so-pleasant finds as well.

So I was curious about this, and so did the math. So I wanted to know how far a ship would be when it dropped below the horizon. For a ship with a height of 30m (pretty tall ship), that would be between 19-20 km away before it was completely obscured from view. Visibility through the atmosphere on the cleanest possible day would be about 296km. This would be reduced by water particles in the air caused by evaporation from the ocean. Even still, with a good set of binoculars, and if the flat earthers were correct, you should be able to see a ship well past 20km. In reality, visibility from shore is somewhere between 3 and 5 km, depending on your height, as the curvature of the Earth is a real thing. You can further prove the curvature of the Earth at the beach. Take a photograph of the horizon. Then compress the width of the image, without compressing the height. The curvature will be easily visible.

Within a small-enough area, the terrestrial surface may seem pretty flat. And of course, Columbus set sail from Spain with four ships, but the Santa Cruz fell off the edge. The spaceborne Tesla may eventually catch up. Meanwhile, I can foresee a flat-planet-enthusiast mad scientist inventing a huge device with opposed paddles that will FLATTEN EARTH, thus proving the addle-pated point.
